  • C# - What should I do when every inherited class needs getter from base class, but setter only for O

    Hello, I have a abstract class called WizardViewModelBase. All my WizardXXXViewModel classes inherit from the base abstract class. The base has a property with a getter. Every sub class needs and overrides that string property as its the DisplayName of the ViewModel. Only ONE ViewModel called WizardTimeTableWeekViewModel needs a setter because I have to set wether the ViewModel is a timetable for week A or week B. Using 2 ViewModels like WizardTimeTableWeekAViewModel and WizardTimeTableWeekBViewModel would be redundant. I do not want to override the setter in all other classes as they do not need a setter. Can I somehow tell the sub class it needs not to override the setter? Or any other suggestion? With interfaces I would be free to use getter or setter but having many empty setter properties is not an option for me.

  • Is there a reason why a base class decorated with XmlInclude would still throw a type unknown exception when serialized?

    I will simplify the code to save space but what is presented does illustrate the core problem. I have a class which has a property that is a base type. There exist 3 dervived classes which could be assigned to that property. If I assign any of the derived classes to the container then the XmlSerializer throws dreaded "The type xxx was not expected. Use the XmlInclude or SoapInclude attribute to specify types that are not known statically." exception when attempting to seralize the container. However my base class is already decorated with that attribute so I figure there must be an additional "hidden" requirement. The really odd part is that the default WCF serializer has no issues with this class hierarchy. The faq concept is simple, but I want to have an administrative-access backend for editing and creating the entries, and securing a login seems more complex and time-consuming, so I'm looking for suggestions for code to start me off. Does anyone know of any open source php scripts or snippets that would work as base code for administrative login to some php scripts that could be used as a simple faq system?   • Django rewrites URL as IP address in browser - why?

    I am using django, nginx and apache. When I access my site with a URL (e.g., http://www.foo.com/) what appears in my browser address is the IP address with admin appended (e.g., http://123.45.67.890/admin/). When I access the site by IP, it is redirected as expected by django's urls.py (e.g., http://123.45.67.890/ - http://123.45.67.890/accounts/login/?next=/) I would like to have the name URL act the same way as the IP. That is, if the URL goes to a new view, the host in the browser address should remain the same and not change to the IP address. Where should I be looking to fix this?   • Why do Ping and Dig provide different IP address than nslookup?

    When pinging my domain name which points to my home public IP from two different servers on my LAN, it shows them pinging different IP. Further investigation shows dig and nslookup providing different results. See below. A little history. My IP used to be 11.22.33.444 and is hosted by Comcast. I changed routers, and it somehow got changed to 55.66.77.888. I've since updated my 1and1 domain name to point to the 55.66.77.888. desktop is a basic server, runs the web server, and connects wirelessly to my LAN. laptop is a GUI and connected via CAT5. Both operate Centos6.4. My old router was a D-Link, and used their "Virtual Server" feature to pass port 80 to desktop. My new router is a Linksys, and I use their "Port Forwarding" feature to pass port 80 to desktop (however, I haven't gotten this part working yet). What is going on??? Why the different IPs? Obviously, it most somehow be stored on the server, but why does the actual machine even know the public IP since it is on a LAN? How do I purge the old IP?     If I have two domains pointing to the same machine, but one resolves to an internal address and the other to my internet facing router, will there be any differnce in route taken to my machine (primarily in terms of performanc). eg. internal.mydomain.com resolves to 192.168.1.200 external.mydomain.com resolves to A.Web.External.IP both eventually resolve back to the same machine. For a client in the network, will using the external address give a performance penalty?

    Perusing some code base I’ve recently came across with a code comment that I would like to share. It was something like this: class Animal { public Animal() { this.Id = Guid.NewGuid(); } public Guid Id { get; private set; } } class Cat : Animal { public Cat() : base() // Always call base since it's not always done automatically { } } Note: All class names were changed to protect the innocent. To clear any possible doubts the C# specification explicitly states that: If an instance constructor has no constructor initializer, a constructor initializer of the form base() is implicitly provided. Thus, an instance constructor declaration of the form C(...) {...} is exactly equivalent to C(...): base() {...} So in conclusion it’s clearly an incorrect comment but what I find alarming is how a comment like that gets into a code base and survives the test of time. Not to forget what it can do to someone who is making a jump from other technologies to C# and reads stuff like that.

    This may be of use to someone else doing this course… The Problem In the section on Computer Arithmetic it gives an example of converting -7.6875 to IEEE floating point format. I understand all the steps except for the first one, where it does the following... 7.6875 (base 10) = 111.1011 (base 2) I don't understand the conversion - I realize that 111 (base 2) = 7 (base 10), but how does the .6875 part relate to the .1011? Or am I totally off track with this? The Solution The fractional part of the decimal to binary conversion is done as follows: 0.6875 x 2 = 1.375 = 0.375 + 1 (Keep the 1 separate) 0.375 x 2   = 0.75   = 0.75    + 0 0.75 x 2    = 1.5      = 0.5      + 1 0.5 x 2     = 1.0       = 0.0       + 1 The bit pattern of 0s and 1s on the right-hand side gives you the fractional part.   • Gathering IP address and workstation information; does it belong in a state class?

    I'm writing an enterprisey utility that collects exception information and writes to the Windows Event Log, sends an email, etc. This utility class will be used by all applications in the corporation: web, BizTalk, Windows Services, etc. Currently this class: holds state given to it via public properties calls out to .NET Framework methods to gather information about runtime details. Included are call to various properties and methods from System.Environment, Reflection details, etc. This implementation has the benefit of allowing all those callers not to have to make these same calls themselves. This means less code for the caller to forget, screw up, etc. Should this state class (please what's the phrase I'm looking for [like DTO]?) know how to resolve/determine runtime details (like the IP address and machine name that it's running on)?
