    We have a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 server with iis6 that is creating a 1024kb httperr file every minute. I can't figure out what I'm looking at.     I am following the steps in this blog to set up rsyslog + logstash + graylog2 and I can't figure out how to replace the @source_host attribute in logstash using the mutate - replace filter. In the exmaple the author replaces his @source_host with a string value but I'd like to use the actual value that is parsed from in this case a syslog. mutate { type => loc1 replace => ["@source_host", "loc1"] } mutate { type => loc2 replace => ["@source_host", "loc2"] } How do I actually maintain the original source host in my logs?

  • For how long do I need to store the logs?

    I will soon be running an internet-based public service which will physically be hosted in the UK on a virtual server. The virtual server is provided by the ISP. I was wondering if there is/are any legal requirement(s) to keep access logs, and if yes - for how long? There is a Wikipedia article that touches this subject but I'm afraid my brain just can't grasp the legislative gibberish. I believe there's EU law and there's UK law; and I do need to comply to both, right? Can somebody explain this in pure layman's terms?

  • Using SSH to find access to a problematic script in logs of multiple domains

    I run several (~20) sites on a Dreamhost VPS. Lately I max my memory allocation for the VPS and I want to find the problem. I would like to have an SSH script that will scan all the log files of all the domains and show me what object (image, php script etc) gets lots of calls. It will count the calls in each /logs/*/http/access.log, do an descending sort and show me the top 10 across domains. But I don't know how to do that. Can it be done? Can anyone suggest a script that will do that? Thanks. (Cross posted to Stack Overflow)

  • Node app crashes after a while on micro EC2 instance even with supervisor

    I'm using supervisor to start my node.js application on a micro EC2 instance. However, the app only stays running for some time until it eventually shuts down. Not exactly sure how long the app stays running but I'm guessing for about a few hours or so. Sometimes less. My question is where on the remote server should I be looking in order to debug this kind of issue? I'm running an Amazon Linux AMI.

    I'm trying to make a compilation file of all the text sent by me and all the responses that included my name.... What's the best way about scripting this? Is there a plugin like that for pidgin? I'd also like to be able to click on lines to add. For example, someone gives a really useful, easy-to-follow guide to another user, and I think: "I'm going to be doing that tomorrow." Rather than marking and pasting every line of it and skipping through all the other convo, I would like to be able to just click 'send to my personal log,' or something. It seems quite useful, right? And I think that a lot of people would use it. So, please try to provide a comprehensive answer, if possible, or one that I can follow through on.

    I'm using the $InputFile facility in rsyslog to monitor various log files scattered around my ubuntu 12.04 server. E.g. nginx, unicorn, rails, postgres, cron etc. Now my problem is, that some of these log files are created with -rw-r----- right, so rsyslog doesn't have read rights. Since I install most of the programs using apt-get, and therefore didn't change anything from default. So, in other words, I would like not to modify every singe log file / daemon to have the right permissions, if I instead could give syslog read access to all of them at once. But the question is - can I do that, and is it the "right thing to do"?

  • Shorewall log question.

    I have been getting various attempts to connect to ports on my shorewall firewall. The ports that I keep seeing connection attempts at are tcp 44444, tcp 44446, udp 55555 and every now and then some slight variation. I ran "netstat -a" and did not see anything listening on those ports. Is this something that I should be worried about or is it just some rouge computers out there? I have noticed alot of the ip addresses are from Spain and Mexico.     For debugging purposes, I need a way to see all HTTP traffic between our Tomcat installation and the test clients. How can I configure Tomcat to trace all HTTP traffic (and not just the headers)? We tried to sniff the traffic using Wireshark, but since the server and the clients are on the same Windows machine it proved problematic, due to the traffic being in localhost.

  • Exchange 2013 Virtual Machine: Backup just mailboxes and clear logs

    I have a Windows Server 2012 machine running Exchange 2013 running as a KVM virtual machine. For my VM guests, I do full image based backups from the host, so that I can quickly restore to any host server simply by copying over the disk image files. This means I don't need a nightly full system backup. That being said, without running a VSS Full Backup, the Exchange logs get massive (Specifically, the performance logs which are 500MB a day). In addition, I would also like to have a nightly backup of just the mail database. What is the best way to accomplish this? A full backup of the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15 folder as I found in one tutorial did not clear out the logs. Thanks, Ben

  • Website Use Monitoring for 3 People

    I work in an IT startup with 2 partners, and I'm the programmer/IT guy -- in other words, the work horse. To make a long story short, I'm doing most of the work right now, while they spend all day on Facebook. That's OK, because they're paying my salary, but if the project fails, I'm sure they'll blame me for it (I'm doing my best to make sure that doesn't happen!), and I want some sort of recourse. I already have an app that blocks time-wasters on my local PC, and keeps logs of when the app is enabled (so I can say "I had Facebook blocked from 9am-5pm today.") Is there any way I can get a brief summary of the most heavily visited sites, split up by client PC? At the end of the month, I want to be able to say "You both load Facebook, on average, every 10 minutes. You spend hours a day on Youtube, and haven't opened up our bugtracker in weeks" and maybe have a nifty chart or graph to match it. We have a crappy D-Link router, and no IT budget. They are both on Windows Vista, I run Ubuntu Linux. I don't want to install any monitoring software on their PC, but I'm totally fine with, say, routing all the network traffic through my machine. I guess I can think of lots of ways to accomplish this (telnet into JSSH and list open tabs? log all the DNS requests, per-domain? even thinking of setting up a webcam on my desk and just keeping 5-minute snapshots...), I just don't really know where to start. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

    Is it possible to configure Apache to use a different log file for each subdomain, even if all of the subdomains are within the same VirtualHost container? So, I have only one VirtualHost: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName example.com ServerAlias test1.example.com test2.example.com test3.example.com </VirtualHost> And I want to end up with the following log files: /var/log/httpd-access_test1.log /var/log/httpd-access_test2.log /var/log/httpd-access_test3.log I know I can probably do this with a custom log format and split-logs, but I was wondering if there's a way to just have Apache do it for me.

    On my laptop doesn't work any camera. I get error: "Camera being used by another application"". I don`t known which program using it. I tried use software like "SplitCam" or "ManyCam". Also I reinstalled K-lite codec to newest, but still getting this error. I get the same error when I turn my Canon video camera to laptop using firewire cable.     I have been running into issue with my MSSQL Database setup with speed. Here is my scenario. About 100M Rows Average: 1k Updates Per Second Hard Drives: RAID 10 SSD MDF --Active Time: 0 Log Drives: 1 SSD LDF - Simple Recovery --Active Time 99.9 --Queue: 8 I do not need a back up of the log so it is set to simple recovery but my bottleneck is still at my log. I get high WAITLOG times and thus it can not update any faster. I can't do bulk updates/transactions and each update needs to be one at a time. Is my only option to increase write performance of the log drives, add a RAID drives? Any suggestions on increasing the performance?

The article is in the scopê of MS System Configuration Manager but my client tells me that the logs can be created even without System Config Manager.   • Can I list file names (or their parent directories) that were recently deleted using rm in OS X?

    Is it possible to find out which files and directories have recently been deleted by rm in OS X? Or failing that, is it possible to find which parent directories have had files or directories within it deleted? The OS version is Snow Leopard. Background: Last night, rvm (ruby version manager) did rm -rf of the ~/ruby directory from the home directory. (This bug has since been fixed) Ideally, I'd like to know what files within the ~/ruby directory were deleted, but failing that, I'd like to know if rvm deleted anything outside of ~/ruby . In case anyone's wondering about backups...: Just about everything within ~/ruby is a git project that has a remote repo, and I have a fairly recent Time Machine backup (only 20 days old).

    I have a number of CentOS 5 servers which use 3ware RAID controllers. These servers are bugging my team with messages about minor temperature changes, like this: Jun 8 12:32:39 HOST smartd[1231]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_01], SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 119 to 118 Jun 8 12:32:39 HOST smartd[1231]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_03], SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 122 to 121 How can I suppress these messages? According to man smartd.conf : To disable any of the 3 reports, set the corresponding limit to 0. Trailing zero arguments may be omitted. By default, all temperature reports are disabled (´-W 0´). On my systems, smartd is reporting about temperature changes by default. I tried a manual approach. In /etc/smartd.conf, I have the following: /dev/twa0 -d 3ware,1 -a -W 0 /dev/twa0 -d 3ware,3 -a -W 0 But this still does not suppress the messages. Since these messages show up in /var/log/messages, LogWatch is sending unnecessary emails every night.

Ideally I'd like to create different types of event log entries based on whether it was a warning or a verbose message. Update: I don't want to log the return value of the commandlet. The Update-EbuMembers cmdlet does not return an object. I want to log any verbose messages written by WriteVerbose and I want to log errors created by ThrowTerminatingError.

  • Viewing the full Skype chat history

    I have Skype 2.8 on Mac OS X 10.5.8. Under the the chat menu is an option called "Recent Chats". This allows me to see logs of recent chats, but not of older ones. I know the older ones are stored because they are in ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/username/chatmsg256.dbb. This file when put in a text editor has text chat information from all my previous Skype chats. It is however stored in an unknown file format that I do not know how to parse. Does Skype have a built-in log viewer (like Adium's) that I can use to access these older logs?
