  Hey guys! I keep getting a syntax error (unexpected $end), and I've isolated it to this chunk of code. I can't for the life of me see any closure issues. It's probably something obvious but I'm going nutty trying to find it. • PHP-GD: Dealing with Unicode characters

  I am developing a web service that renders characters using the PHP GD extension, using a user-selected TTF font. This works fine in ASCII-land, but there are a few problems: The string to be rendered comes in as UTF-8. I would like to limit the list of user-selectable fonts to be only those which can render the string properly, as some fonts only have glyphs for ASCII characters, ISO 8601, etc. In the case where some decorative characters are included, it would be fine to render the majority of characters in the selected font and render the decorative characters in Arial (or whatever font contains the extended glyphs). It does not seem like PHP-GD has support for querying the font metadata sufficiently to figure out if a character can be rendered in a given font. What is a good way to get font metrics into PHP? Is there a command-line utility that can dump in XML or other parsable format?

• Flex 4 - Using .pfm/.pfb fonts

  Hi everyone, I just switched to Flash Builder 4 & Flex 4 SDK, and it seems it's no longer possible to use a .pfm/.pfb font, either by embedding it or using it as a system font. I keep getting error messages, and Google can't find anybody having the same issue. I tried several methods: - copy/pasting the [Embed] statement which was working using Flex 3 SDK - installing the font and then try to simply call it by its name in a CSS declaration without embedding it ; seems to work for every .ttf and .otf system fonts, but not for .pfm/.pfm ones - using a Flash-generated swf which embeds the font So far none of these seems to work. Has anybody got an idea on how to achieve this? I actually don't care using a system font without embedding it as long as it works. I'll be really grateful if somebody could help me on this, I'm totally stuck and cannot use another font instead.

  Hi, I've just added a ttf file to the project (c# 2008 express) as "file" and build option to embeded resource. • Cannot change the Label text!

  I have created a custom control and added a label property to it so at design time we can pick a Label and assign it to that control. so basically I want that if a label is assigned to that control, its text should change as below and also its text should change to bold font, so here is that code: private Label assignedLabel; public Label AssignedLabel { get { return assignedLabel; } set { assignedLabel = value; assignedLabel.Text = @"*" + assignedLabel.Text; assignedLabel.Font = new Font(AssignedLabel.Font, FontStyle.Bold); AssignedLabel.Refresh(); } } the problem is that based on the code above the Font of that assigned label is correctly changing to Bold font, but its Text is not taking affect. why is that happening? how can I fix this issue?

  This is a question to all web-developers working in the industry more than a few years. Today the server guy at my work told me that his browser didnt render a google font I used on a site properly, so I checked his browser - it was firefox 3.5. (google font Raleway).. This made me think.. I know for some of our sites its a requirement to support IE6 (larger corperate sites) but for the rest (personal sites) should I be looking at developing for all incrments of firefox, chrome, IE and safari???? Does your company still support IE6? Does your company support previous versions of modern browsers or just the latest ones? and finally, has anyone else had this problem with FF 3.5 and Google Hosted font Raleway..(the font displays extra extra thing so the font is almost unreadable) If anyones interested I found a working solution to my font problem here: http://www.jshsolutions.net/google-webfonts-cross-browser-fix-howto/ Sam

• Expand <div> tag to bottom of page with CSS

  Hi all, I know this question gets asked a lot because I have looked at many "solutions" trying to get this to work for me. I can get it to work if I hack up the html but I want to use all CSS. All I want is a header with two columns below it, and I want these three items to fill the entire page/screen, and I want to do it with CSS and without frames or tables. The XAMPP user interface looks exactly how I want my page to look, but again, I do not want to use frames. I cannot get the two orangeish colored columns to extend to the bottom of the screen. I do have it so it looks like the right column extends to the bottom of the screen just by changing the body background color to the same color as the background color of the right column, but I would like both columns to extend to the bottom so I didn't have to do that.   I'm often confused by this. I've always been taught to name numbers I use often using variables or constants, but if it reduces the efficiency of the program, should I still do it? • Multiple Components in a JTree Node Renderer & Node Editor

  I am attempting to create a JTree where a node has several components: a JPanel that holds a JCheckBox, followed by a JLabel, then a JComboBox. I have attached the code at the bottom if one wishes to run it. Fortunately the JTree correctly renders the components. However when I click on the JComboBox, the node disappears; if I click on the JCheckBox, it works fine. It seems that I am doing something wrong with how the TreeCellEditor is being set up. How could I resolve this issue? Am I going beyond the capabilities of JTree? Here's a quick overview of the code I have posted below. The class EntityListDialog merely creates the user interface. It is not useful to understand it other than the createTree method. Node is the data structure that holds information about each node in the JTree. All Nodes have a name, but samples may be null or an empty array. This should be evident by looking at EntityListDialog's createTree method. The name is used as the text of the JCheckBox. If samples is non-empty, it is used as the contents of the JCheckBox. NodeWithSamplesRenderer renders Nodes whose samples are non-empty. It creates the complicated user interface with the JPanel consisting of the JCheckBox and the JComboBox. NodeWithoutSamplesRenderer creates just a JCheckBox when samples is empty. RendererDispatcher decides whether to use a NodeWithSamplesRenderer or a NodeWithoutSamplesRenderer. This entirely depends on whether Node has a non-empty samples member or not. It essentially functions as a means for the NodeWith*SamplesRenderer to plug into the JTree.   Hello all, I'm trying to parse some returned html to look for currently playing movies. The pattern I'm trying to match looks like: <span dir=ltr>Clash of the Titans</span> Of which there are several in the returned html. (the html is huge, I've posted a sample at the bottom) I'm trying get an array of the movie titles with the following command: titles = listings_html.split(/(<span dir=ltr>).*(<\/span>)/) But I'm not getting the results I'm expecting. Can anyone see a problem with my approach or regex? • HttpWebRequest and Ignoring SSL Certificate Errors

  Man I can't believe this. I'm still mucking around with OFX servers and it drives me absolutely crazy how some these servers are just so unbelievably misconfigured. I've recently hit three different 3 major brokerages which fail HTTP validation with bad or corrupt certificates at least according to the .NET WebRequest class. What's somewhat odd here though is that WinInet seems to find no issue with these servers - it's only .NET's Http client that's ultra finicky. So the question then becomes how do you tell HttpWebRequest to ignore certificate errors? In WinInet there used to be a host of flags to do this, but it's not quite so easy with WebRequest. Basically you need to configure the CertificatePolicy on the ServicePointManager by creating a custom policy. Not exactly trivial. It still amazes me that theses OFX servers even require this. After all this is financial data we're talking about here. The last thing I want to do is disable extra checks on the certificates. • Google PageSpeed, optimizing Google's own elements

  I'm trying Google's PageSpeed online service Ironically, it's primarily highlighting Google's own services as something that needs improvement on my site 1) jQuery from Google: blocking. So I moved all javascript from <head> to the end of the document before </body>. That helped 2) Linking to external Google Font CSS (in <head>): blocking. But the font is critical to the design of the page and should load before much else 3) Google Analytics: Caching is not good. (Google has set it internally to 2 hours expiration). Don't know how to change this (this is also placed at the bottom of page) The Google Font is highlighted as a big priority to change. How can I fix this? Where/how should I call the the font?

• Secure wipe of a hard drive using WinPE.

However, these applications are typically expensive or unreliable.  Plus, if you have a laptop or lack a secondary computer to put the hard drive into – how on earth do you wipe it quickly and easily while still conforming to a 7 pass rule (this means that every possible bit on the hard drive is set to 0 and then to 1 seven times in a row)?  Yes, one pass should be enough – as turning every bit from a 1 to a zero will wipe the data from existence.  But, we’re dealing with tinfoil hat wearing types here people.  DOD standards dictate at least 3 passes, and typically 7 is the preferred amount.  I’m not going to argue about data recovery.  I have been told to use 7 passes, and so I will.  So say we all! Quite some time ago I used to make a BartPE XP-based boot cd for the original purpose of securely wiping data.  I loved BartPE and integrated so many plugins into my builds that I could do pretty much anything directly from CD.  Reset passwords, uninstall security updates, wipe drives, chkdsk, remove spyware, install Windows, etc.  However, with the newer multi-core systems and new chipsets coming out from vendors, I found that BartPE was rather difficult to keep up to date.  I have since switched to WinPE 3.0 (Windows Preinstallation Environment). http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc748933(WS.10).aspx  It is fairly simple to create your own CD, and I have made a few helpful scripts to easily integrate drivers and rebuild the ISO file for you.  I’ll cover making your own boot CD utilizing WinPE 3.0 in a later post – I can talk about WinPE forever and need to collect my thoughts!!  My wife loves talking about WinPE almost as much as talking about Doctor Who.  Wait, did I say loves?  Hmmmm, I may have meant loathes. The topic at hand?  Right. Wiping a drive! I must have drunk too much coffee this morning.  I like to use a simple batch script that calls a combination of diskpart.exe from Microsoft® and Sdelete.exe created by our friend Mark Russinovich. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897443.aspx All of the following files are located within the same directory on my WinPE boot CD. Here are the contents of wipe_me.bat, script.txt and sdelete.reg. Wipe_me.bat:   @echo off echo. echo     I will completely wipe the local hard drives using echo     7 individual wipes. The data will NOT echo     be recoverable.  I will begin after you pause echo. echo Preparing to partition and format disk. Diskpart.exe /s "script.txt" REM I was annoyed by not having a completely automated script – and Sdelete wants you to accept the license agreement. So, I added a registry file to skip doing that. regedit /S sdelete.reg rem sdelete options selected are: -p (passes) -c (zero free space) -s (recurse through subdirectories, if any) -z (clean free space) [drive letter] sdelete.exe -p 7 -c -s -z c: echo. echo Pass seven complete. echo. echo Wiping complete. • Fonts still missing in Flash after cleaning caches

  Hi there I was having missing fonts in Flash CS4, so I cleaned the font caches using the following commands in Terminal: sudo atsutil databases -remove atsutil server -shutdown atsutil server -ping These commands ran fine, so I restarted and opened my Flash file. Now suddenly Verdana is missing in Flash which was previously there. I ran FontNuke, and cleaned caches, and rebooted. Still nothing showed in Flash. I ran Cocktail, and cleaned just the font caches (all users on system), still nothing in Flash. I reinstalled Flash (didn't work) I then uninstalled Flash, rebooted and installed Flash, rebooted. (didn't work) After all this, Verdana still doesn't load in Flash. I validated all fonts in Font Book and removed the erroneous fonts. Is there any other way I can have all the fonts load in Flash (eliminate another cache I am not seeing)? I am so sick of Flash and its font caches and Verdana is pretty much a standard font so what am I doing wrong here?

• WinForms TabControl: How to avoid tab-rendering on DrawMode=OwnerDrawFixed?

  I extended the (WindowsForms) built-in TabControl in order to implement closing tabs right on the tab itself ("x" image on the right like in Webbrowsers). The inherited control renders the text and images. Also, it uses visual styles on hover etc. All works very well, but I have one problem I can't solve. When the tabs are rendered, I cannot avoid that the Control paints the tabs another time as seen in this screenshot: That's a problem for two reasons: It looks ugly on the selected tab I'd like to increase the tabs' width because the current width doesn't take account of the "x" image on the right Any idea how to solve this?

To extend the code with a new way of presenting the model, the code need to be modified. So I started to think about how the above code could be rewritten so it will follow the Single Responsibility and open-close principle. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do the following against the Get() method?   Accept: application/json JSON will be returned – Already part of the Web API   Accept: text/html Returns the model as HTML by using a View   The best thing, it’s possible!   By using the RazorEngine I created a custom MediaTypeFormatter (RazorFormatter, code at the end of this blog post) and associate it with the media type “text/html”. I decided to use convention before configuration to decide which Razor view should be used to render the model. Enablement 2.0 Interactive guided learning paths (GLPs) with recommendations on how to achieve specialization Upgraded partner solution kits Enhanced, specialized business centers available 24/7 around the globe on the OPN portal OPN Competency Center—Tracking ProgressThe OPN Competency Center keeps track as a partner applies for and achieves specialization in selected areas. You start with an assessment that compares your organization’s current skills and experience with the requirements for specialization in the area you have chosen. The OPN Competency Center then provides a roadmap that itemizes the skills and the knowledge you need to earn specialized status. In summary, OPN Specialization not only includes key training resources but a way to track and show progression for your partner organization. Q: What is are the OPN Membership Levels and what are the benefits?A:  Christine: The base OPN membership levels are: Remarketer: At the Remarketer level, retailers can choose to resell select Oracle products with the backing of authorized, regionally located, value-added distributors (VADs). The Remarketer level has no fees and no partner agreement with Oracle, but does offer online training and sales tools through the OPN portal.Program Details: RemarketerSilver Level: The Silver level is for Oracle partners who are focused on reselling and developing business with products ordered through the Oracle 1-Click Ordering Program. The Silver level provides a cost-effective, yet scalable way for partners to start an OPN Specialized membership and offers a substantial set of benefits that lets partners increase their competitive positioning. Program Details: SilverGold Level: Gold-level partners have the ability to specialize, helping them grow their business and create differentiation in the marketplace. Oracle partners at the Gold level can develop, sell, or implement the full stack of Oracle solutions and can apply to resell Oracle Applications.Program Details: GoldPlatinum Level: The Platinum level is for Oracle partners who want the highest level of benefits and are committed to reaching a minimum of five specializations. The suite combines the development of rich internet applications; a multi-channel portal framework; and a suite of horizontal WebCenter applications, which provide content, presence, and social networking capabilities to create a highly interactive user experience. Oracle WebCenter Content Specialization: Available NowThe Oracle WebCenter Content Specialization provides insight into the following products; Universal Content Management, WebCenter Records Management, WebCenter Imaging, WebCenter Distributed Capture, and WebCenter Capture.Oracle WebCenter Content Specialized Partners can efficiently build content-rich business applications, reuse content, and integrate hundreds of content services with other business applications. Oracle WebCenter Sites Specialization: Available Q1 2012Oracle WebCenter Sites is part of the broader Oracle WebCenter platform that provides organizations with a complete customer experience management solution.  Partners that align with the new Oracle WebCenter Sites platform allow their customers organizations to: Leverage customer information from all channels and systems Manage interactions across all channels Unify commerce, merchandising, marketing, and service across all channels Provide personalized, choreographed consumer journeys across all channels Integrate order orchestration, supply chain management and order fulfillment Q: What criteria does the Partner organization need to achieve Specialization? What about individual Sales, PreSales & Implementation Specialist/Technical consultants?A: Brian: Each Oracle WebCenter Specialization has unique Business Criteria that must be met in order to achieve that Specialization.  This includes a unique number of transactions (co-sell, re-sell, and referral), customer references and then unique number of specialists as part of a partner team (Sales, Pre-Sales, Implementation, and Support).   Each WebCenter Specialization provides training resources (GLPs, BootCamps, Assessments and Exams for individuals on a partner’s staff to fulfill those requirements.  That criterion can be found for each Specialization on the Specialize tab for each WebCenter Knowledge Zone.  Here are the sample criteria, recommended courses, exams for the WebCenter Portal Specialization: WebCenter Portal Specialization Criteria Q: Do you have any suggestions on the best way for partners to get started if they would like to know more?A: Christine:   The best way to start is for partners is look at their business and core Oracle team focus and then look to become specialized in one or more areas.  Once you have selected the Specializations that are right for your business, you need to follow the first 3 key steps described below. The fourth step outlines the additional process to follow if you meet the criteria to be Advanced Specialized. Note that Step 4 may not be done without first following Steps 1-3.1. Join the Knowledge Zone(s) where you want to achieve Specialized status Go to the Knowledge Zone lick on the "Why Partner" tab Click on the "Join Knowledge Zone" link 2. Meet the Specialization criteria - Define and implement plans in your organization to achieve the competency and business criteria targets of the Specialization. (Note: Worldwide OPN members at the Gold, Platinum, or Diamond level and their Associates at the Gold, Platinum, or Diamond level may count their collective resources to meet the business and competency criteria required for specialization in this area.) 3. Apply for Specialization – when you have met the business and competency criteria required, inform Oracle by completing the following steps: Click on the "Specialize" tab in the Knowledge Zone Click on the "Apply Now" button Complete the online application form Oracle will validate the information provided, and once approved, you will receive notification from Oracle of your awarded Specialized status. Apply for Advanced Specialization (Optional) – If your company has on staff 50 unique Certified Implementation Specialists in your company's approved Specialization's product set, let Oracle know by following these steps: Ensure that you have 50 or more unique individuals that are Certified Implementation Specialists in the specific Specialization awarded to your company If you are pooling resources from another Associate or Worldwide entity, ensure you know that company’s name and country Have your Oracle PRM Administrator complete the online Advanced Specialization Application Oracle will validate the information provided, and once approved, you will receive notification from Oracle of your awarded Advanced Specialized status.
