  • TOTD #166: Using NoSQL database in your Java EE 6 Applications on GlassFish - MongoDB for now!

    - by arungupta
    The Java EE 6 platform includes Java Persistence API to work with RDBMS. The JPA specification defines a comprehensive API that includes, but not restricted to, how a database table can be mapped to a POJO and vice versa, provides mechanisms how a PersistenceContext can be injected in a @Stateless bean and then be used for performing different operations on the database table and write typesafe queries. There are several well known advantages of RDBMS but the NoSQL movement has gained traction over past couple of years. The NoSQL databases are not intended to be a replacement for the mainstream RDBMS. As Philosophy of NoSQL explains, NoSQL database was designed for casual use where all the features typically provided by an RDBMS are not required. The name "NoSQL" is more of a category of databases that is more known for what it is not rather than what it is. The basic principles of NoSQL database are: No need to have a pre-defined schema and that makes them a schema-less database. Addition of new properties to existing objects is easy and does not require ALTER TABLE. The unstructured data gives flexibility to change the format of data any time without downtime or reduced service levels. Also there are no joins happening on the server because there is no structure and thus no relation between them. Scalability and performance is more important than the entire set of functionality typically provided by an RDBMS. This set of databases provide eventual consistency and/or transactions restricted to single items but more focus on CRUD. Not be restricted to SQL to access the information stored in the backing database. Designed to scale-out (horizontal) instead of scale-up (vertical). This is important knowing that databases, and everything else as well, is moving into the cloud. RBDMS can scale-out using sharding but requires complex management and not for the faint of heart. Unlike RBDMS which require a separate caching tier, most of the NoSQL databases comes with integrated caching. Designed for less management and simpler data models lead to lower administration as well. There are primarily three types of NoSQL databases: Key-Value stores (e.g. Cassandra and Riak) Document databases (MongoDB or CouchDB) Graph databases (Neo4J) You may think NoSQL is panacea but as I mentioned above they are not meant to replace the mainstream databases and here is why: RDBMS have been around for many years, very stable, and functionally rich. This is something CIOs and CTOs can bet their money on without much worry. There is a reason 98% of Fortune 100 companies run Oracle :-) NoSQL is cutting edge, brings excitement to developers, but enterprises are cautious about them. Commercial databases like Oracle are well supported by the backing enterprises in terms of providing support resources on a global scale. There is a full ecosystem built around these commercial databases providing training, performance tuning, architecture guidance, and everything else. NoSQL is fairly new and typically backed by a single company not able to meet the scale of these big enterprises. NoSQL databases are good for CRUDing operations but business intelligence is extremely important for enterprises to stay competitive. RDBMS provide extensive tooling to generate this data but that was not the original intention of NoSQL databases and is lacking in that area. Generating any meaningful information other than CRUDing require extensive programming. Not suited for complex transactions such as banking systems or other highly transactional applications requiring 2-phase commit. SQL cannot be used with NoSQL databases and writing simple queries can be involving. Enough talking, lets take a look at some code. This blog has published multiple blogs on how to access a RDBMS using JPA in a Java EE 6 application. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) will show you can use MongoDB (a document-oriented database) with a typical 3-tier Java EE 6 application. Lets get started! The complete source code of this project can be downloaded here. Download MongoDB for your platform from here (1.8.2 as of this writing) and start the server as: arun@ArunUbuntu:~/tools/mongodb-linux-x86_64-1.8.2/bin$./mongod./mongod --help for help and startup optionsSun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] MongoDB starting : pid=11210port=27017 dbpath=/data/db/ 64-bit Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] db version v1.8.2, pdfile version4.5Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] git version:433bbaa14aaba6860da15bd4de8edf600f56501bSun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] build sys info: Linuxbs-linux64.10gen.cc 2.6.21.7-2.ec2.v1.2.fc8xen #1 SMP Fri Nov 2017:48:28 EST 2009 x86_64 BOOST_LIB_VERSION=1_41Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] waiting for connections on port 27017Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [websvr] web admin interface listening on port 28017 The default directory for the database is /data/db and needs to be created as: sudo mkdir -p /data/db/sudo chown `id -u` /data/db You can specify a different directory using "--dbpath" option. Refer to Quickstart for your specific platform. Using NetBeans, create a Java EE 6 project and make sure to enable CDI and add JavaServer Faces framework. Download MongoDB Java Driver (2.6.3 of this writing) and add it to the project library by selecting "Properties", "LIbraries", "Add Library...", creating a new library by specifying the location of the JAR file, and adding the library to the created project. Edit the generated "index.xhtml" such that it looks like: <h1>Add a new movie</h1><h:form> Name: <h:inputText value="#{movie.name}" size="20"/><br/> Year: <h:inputText value="#{movie.year}" size="6"/><br/> Language: <h:inputText value="#{movie.language}" size="20"/><br/> <h:commandButton actionListener="#{movieSessionBean.createMovie}" action="show" title="Add" value="submit"/></h:form> This page has a simple HTML form with three text boxes and a submit button. The text boxes take name, year, and language of a movie and the submit button invokes the "createMovie" method of "movieSessionBean" and then render "show.xhtml". Create "show.xhtml" ("New" -> "Other..." -> "Other" -> "XHTML File") such that it looks like: <head> <title><h1>List of movies</h1></title> </head> <body> <h:form> <h:dataTable value="#{movieSessionBean.movies}" var="m" > <h:column><f:facet name="header">Name</f:facet>#{m.name}</h:column> <h:column><f:facet name="header">Year</f:facet>#{m.year}</h:column> <h:column><f:facet name="header">Language</f:facet>#{m.language}</h:column> </h:dataTable> </h:form> This page shows the name, year, and language of all movies stored in the database so far. The list of movies is returned by "movieSessionBean.movies" property. Now create the "Movie" class such that it looks like: import com.mongodb.BasicDBObject;import com.mongodb.BasicDBObject;import com.mongodb.DBObject;import javax.enterprise.inject.Model;import javax.validation.constraints.Size;/** * @author arun */@Modelpublic class Movie { @Size(min=1, max=20) private String name; @Size(min=1, max=20) private String language; private int year; // getters and setters for "name", "year", "language" public BasicDBObject toDBObject() { BasicDBObject doc = new BasicDBObject(); doc.put("name", name); doc.put("year", year); doc.put("language", language); return doc; } public static Movie fromDBObject(DBObject doc) { Movie m = new Movie(); m.name = (String)doc.get("name"); m.year = (int)doc.get("year"); m.language = (String)doc.get("language"); return m; } @Override public String toString() { return name + ", " + year + ", " + language; }} Other than the usual boilerplate code, the key methods here are "toDBObject" and "fromDBObject". These methods provide a conversion from "Movie" -> "DBObject" and vice versa. The "DBObject" is a MongoDB class that comes as part of the mongo-2.6.3.jar file and which we added to our project earlier.  The complete javadoc for 2.6.3 can be seen here. Notice, this class also uses Bean Validation constraints and will be honored by the JSF layer. Finally, create "MovieSessionBean" stateless EJB with all the business logic such that it looks like: package org.glassfish.samples;import com.mongodb.BasicDBObject;import com.mongodb.DB;import com.mongodb.DBCollection;import com.mongodb.DBCursor;import com.mongodb.DBObject;import com.mongodb.Mongo;import java.net.UnknownHostException;import java.util.ArrayList;import java.util.List;import javax.annotation.PostConstruct;import javax.ejb.Stateless;import javax.inject.Inject;import javax.inject.Named;/** * @author arun */@Stateless@Namedpublic class MovieSessionBean { @Inject Movie movie; DBCollection movieColl; @PostConstruct private void initDB() throws UnknownHostException { Mongo m = new Mongo(); DB db = m.getDB("movieDB"); movieColl = db.getCollection("movies"); if (movieColl == null) { movieColl = db.createCollection("movies", null); } } public void createMovie() { BasicDBObject doc = movie.toDBObject(); movieColl.insert(doc); } public List<Movie> getMovies() { List<Movie> movies = new ArrayList(); DBCursor cur = movieColl.find(); System.out.println("getMovies: Found " + cur.size() + " movie(s)"); for (DBObject dbo : cur.toArray()) { movies.add(Movie.fromDBObject(dbo)); } return movies; }} The database is initialized in @PostConstruct. Instead of a working with a database table, NoSQL databases work with a schema-less document. The "Movie" class is the document in our case and stored in the collection "movies". The collection allows us to perform query functions on all movies. The "getMovies" method invokes "find" method on the collection which is equivalent to the SQL query "select * from movies" and then returns a List<Movie>. Also notice that there is no "persistence.xml" in the project. Right-click and run the project to see the output as: Enter some values in the text box and click on enter to see the result as: If you reached here then you've successfully used MongoDB in your Java EE 6 application, congratulations! • Oracle WebCenter Partner Program

    - by kellsey.ruppel
    In competitive marketplaces, your company needs to quickly respond to changes and new trends, in order to open opportunities and build long-term growth. Oracle has a variety of next-generation services, solutions and resources that will leverage the differentiators in your offerings. Name your partnering needs: Oracle has the answer. This week we’d like to focus on Partners and the value your organization can gain from working with the Oracle PartnerNetwork. The Oracle PartnerNetwork will empower your company with exceptional resources to distinguish your offerings from the competition, seize opportunities, and increase your sales. We’re happy to welcome Christine Kungl, and Brian Buzzell, from Oracle’s World Wide Alliances & Channels (WWA&C) WebCenter Partner Enablement team, as today’s guests on the Oracle WebCenter blog. Q: What is the Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN)?A: Christine: Oracle’s PartnerNetwork (OPN) is a collaborative partnership which allows registered companies specific added value resources to help differentiate themselves from their competition. Through OPN programs it provides companies the ability to seize and target opportunities, educate and train their teams, and leverage unparalleled opportunity given Oracle’s large market footprint. OPN’s multi-level programs are targeted at different levels allowing companies to grow and evolve with Oracle based on their business needs.  As part of their OPN memberships partners are encouraged to become OPN Specialized allowing those partners additional differentiation in Oracle’s Partner Network Community.  Q: What is an OPN Specialization and what resources are available for Specialized Partners?A: Brian: Oracle wanted a better way for our partners to differentiate their special skills and expertise, as well a more effective way to communicate that difference to customers.  Oracle’s expanding product portfolio demanded that we be able to identify partners with significant product knowledge—those who had made an investment in Oracle and a continuing commitment to deliver Oracle solutions. And with more than 30,000 Oracle partners around the world, Oracle needed a way for our customers to choose the right partner for their business. So how did Oracle meet this need? With the new partner program:  Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) Specialized. In this new program, Oracle partners are: Specialized :  Differentiating themselves from the competition with expertise that set them apart Recognized:  Being acknowledged for investing in becoming Oracle experts in specialized areas. Preferred :  Connecting with potential customers who are seeking  value-added solutions for their business OPN Specialized provides all partners with educational opportunities, training, and tools specially designed to build competency and grow business.  Partners can serve their customers better through key resources:OPN Specialized Knowledge Zones – Located on the updated and enhanced OPN portal— provide a single point of entry for all education and training information for Oracle partners. Enablement 2.0 Resources —Enablement 2.0 helps Oracle partners build their competencies and skills through a variety of educational opportunities and expanded training choices. These resources include: Enablement 2.0 “Boot camps” provide three-tiered learning levels that help jump-start partner training The role-based training covers Oracle’s application and technology products and offers a combination of classroom lectures, hands-on lab exercises, and case studies. Enablement 2.0 Interactive guided learning paths (GLPs) with recommendations on how to achieve specialization Upgraded partner solution kits Enhanced, specialized business centers available 24/7 around the globe on the OPN portal OPN Competency Center—Tracking ProgressThe OPN Competency Center keeps track as a partner applies for and achieves specialization in selected areas. You start with an assessment that compares your organization’s current skills and experience with the requirements for specialization in the area you have chosen. The OPN Competency Center then provides a roadmap that itemizes the skills and the knowledge you need to earn specialized status. In summary, OPN Specialization not only includes key training resources but a way to track and show progression for your partner organization. Q: What is are the OPN Membership Levels and what are the benefits?A:  Christine: The base OPN membership levels are: Remarketer: At the Remarketer level, retailers can choose to resell select Oracle products with the backing of authorized, regionally located, value-added distributors (VADs). The Remarketer level has no fees and no partner agreement with Oracle, but does offer online training and sales tools through the OPN portal.Program Details: RemarketerSilver Level: The Silver level is for Oracle partners who are focused on reselling and developing business with products ordered through the Oracle 1-Click Ordering Program. The Silver level provides a cost-effective, yet scalable way for partners to start an OPN Specialized membership and offers a substantial set of benefits that lets partners increase their competitive positioning. Program Details: SilverGold Level: Gold-level partners have the ability to specialize, helping them grow their business and create differentiation in the marketplace. Oracle partners at the Gold level can develop, sell, or implement the full stack of Oracle solutions and can apply to resell Oracle Applications.Program Details: GoldPlatinum Level: The Platinum level is for Oracle partners who want the highest level of benefits and are committed to reaching a minimum of five specializations. Platinum partners are recognized for their expertise in a broad range of products and technology, and receive dedicated support from Oracle.Program Details: PlatinumIn addition we recently introduced a new level:Diamond Level: This level is the most prestigious level of OPN Specialized. It allows companies to differentiate further because of their focused depth and breadth of their expertise. Program Details: DiamondSo as you can see there are various levels cost effective ways that Partners can get assistance, differentiation through OPN membership. Q: What role does the Oracle's World Wide Alliances & Channels (WWA&C), Partner Enablement teams and the WebCenter Community play?  A: Brian: Oracle’s WWA&C teams are responsible for manage relationships, educating their teams, creating go-to-market solutions and fostering communities for Oracle partners worldwide.  The WebCenter Partner Enablement Middleware Team is tasked to create, manage and distribute Specialization resources for the WebCenter Partner community. Q: What WebCenter Specializations are currently available?A: Christine:  As of now here are the following WebCenter Specializations and their availability: Oracle WebCenter Portal Specialization (Oracle WebCenter Portal): Available NowThe Oracle WebCenter Specialization provides insight into the following products: WebCenter Services, WebCenter Spaces, and WebLogic Portal.Oracle WebCenter Specialized Partners can efficiently use Oracle WebCenter products to create social applications, enterprise portals, communities, composite applications, and Internet or intranet Web sites on a standards-based, service-oriented architecture (SOA). The suite combines the development of rich internet applications; a multi-channel portal framework; and a suite of horizontal WebCenter applications, which provide content, presence, and social networking capabilities to create a highly interactive user experience. Oracle WebCenter Content Specialization: Available NowThe Oracle WebCenter Content Specialization provides insight into the following products; Universal Content Management, WebCenter Records Management, WebCenter Imaging, WebCenter Distributed Capture, and WebCenter Capture.Oracle WebCenter Content Specialized Partners can efficiently build content-rich business applications, reuse content, and integrate hundreds of content services with other business applications. This allows our customers to decrease costs, automate processes, reduce resource bottlenecks, share content effectively, minimize the number of lost documents, and better manage risk. Oracle WebCenter Sites Specialization: Available Q1 2012Oracle WebCenter Sites is part of the broader Oracle WebCenter platform that provides organizations with a complete customer experience management solution.  Partners that align with the new Oracle WebCenter Sites platform allow their customers organizations to: Leverage customer information from all channels and systems Manage interactions across all channels Unify commerce, merchandising, marketing, and service across all channels Provide personalized, choreographed consumer journeys across all channels Integrate order orchestration, supply chain management and order fulfillment Q: What criteria does the Partner organization need to achieve Specialization? What about individual Sales, PreSales & Implementation Specialist/Technical consultants?A: Brian: Each Oracle WebCenter Specialization has unique Business Criteria that must be met in order to achieve that Specialization.  This includes a unique number of transactions (co-sell, re-sell, and referral), customer references and then unique number of specialists as part of a partner team (Sales, Pre-Sales, Implementation, and Support).   Each WebCenter Specialization provides training resources (GLPs, BootCamps, Assessments and Exams for individuals on a partner’s staff to fulfill those requirements.  That criterion can be found for each Specialization on the Specialize tab for each WebCenter Knowledge Zone.  Here are the sample criteria, recommended courses, exams for the WebCenter Portal Specialization: WebCenter Portal Specialization Criteria Q: Do you have any suggestions on the best way for partners to get started if they would like to know more?A: Christine:   The best way to start is for partners is look at their business and core Oracle team focus and then look to become specialized in one or more areas.  Once you have selected the Specializations that are right for your business, you need to follow the first 3 key steps described below. The fourth step outlines the additional process to follow if you meet the criteria to be Advanced Specialized. Note that Step 4 may not be done without first following Steps 1-3.1. Join the Knowledge Zone(s) where you want to achieve Specialized status Go to the Knowledge Zone lick on the "Why Partner" tab Click on the "Join Knowledge Zone" link 2. Meet the Specialization criteria - Define and implement plans in your organization to achieve the competency and business criteria targets of the Specialization. (Note: Worldwide OPN members at the Gold, Platinum, or Diamond level and their Associates at the Gold, Platinum, or Diamond level may count their collective resources to meet the business and competency criteria required for specialization in this area.) 3. Apply for Specialization – when you have met the business and competency criteria required, inform Oracle by completing the following steps: Click on the "Specialize" tab in the Knowledge Zone Click on the "Apply Now" button Complete the online application form Oracle will validate the information provided, and once approved, you will receive notification from Oracle of your awarded Specialized status. Need more information? Access our Step by Step Guide (PDF) 4. Apply for Advanced Specialization (Optional) – If your company has on staff 50 unique Certified Implementation Specialists in your company's approved Specialization's product set, let Oracle know by following these steps: Ensure that you have 50 or more unique individuals that are Certified Implementation Specialists in the specific Specialization awarded to your company If you are pooling resources from another Associate or Worldwide entity, ensure you know that company’s name and country Have your Oracle PRM Administrator complete the online Advanced Specialization Application Oracle will validate the information provided, and once approved, you will receive notification from Oracle of your awarded Advanced Specialized status. • Filtering in a HierarchicalDataTemplate via MarkupExtension?

    - by Dan Bryant
    I'm trying to create a MarkupExtension to allow filtering of items in an ItemsSource of a HierarchicalDataTemplate. In particular, I'd like to be able to supply a method name that will be executed on the DataContext in order to perform the filtering. The usage syntax I'm after looks like this: <HierarchicalDataTemplate DataType="{x:Type src:DeviceBindingViewModel}" ItemsSource="{Utilities:FilterCollection {Binding Definition.Entries}, MethodName=FilterEntries}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Image Source="{StaticResource BindingImage}" Width="24" Height="24" Margin="3"/> <TextBlock Text="{Binding DisplayName}" FontSize="12" VerticalAlignment="Center"/> </StackPanel> </HierarchicalDataTemplate> My code for the custom MarkupExtension looks like this: public sealed class FilterCollectionExtension : MarkupExtension { private readonly MultiBinding _binding; private Predicate<Object> _filterMethod; public string MethodName { get; set; } public FilterCollectionExtension(Binding binding) { _binding = new MultiBinding(); _binding.Bindings.Add(binding); //We package a reference to the DataContext with the binding so that the Converter has access to it var selfBinding = new Binding {RelativeSource = RelativeSource.Self}; _binding.Bindings.Add(selfBinding); _binding.Converter = new InternalConverter(this); } public FilterCollectionExtension(Binding binding, string methodName) : this(binding) { MethodName = methodName; } public override object ProvideValue(IServiceProvider serviceProvider) { return _binding; } private bool FilterInternal(Object dataContext, Object value) { //Filtering is only applicable if a DataContext is defined if (dataContext != null) { if (_filterMethod == null) { var type = dataContext.GetType(); var method = type.GetMethod(MethodName, new[] { typeof(Object) }); if (method == null || method.ReturnType != typeof(bool)) throw new InvalidOperationException("Could not locate a filter predicate named " + MethodName + " on the DataContext"); _filterMethod = (Predicate<Object>)Delegate.CreateDelegate(typeof(Predicate<Object>), dataContext, method); } else { if (_filterMethod.Target != dataContext) { _filterMethod = (Predicate<Object>) Delegate.CreateDelegate(typeof (Predicate<Object>), dataContext, _filterMethod.Method); } } if (_filterMethod != null) return _filterMethod(value); } //If no filtering resolved, just allow all elements return true; } private class InternalConverter : IMultiValueConverter { private readonly FilterCollectionExtension _owner; public InternalConverter(FilterCollectionExtension owner) { _owner = owner; } public object Convert(object[] values, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture) { var enumerable = values[0]; var targetElement = (FrameworkElement)values[1]; var view = CollectionViewSource.GetDefaultView(enumerable); view.Filter = item => _owner.FilterInternal(targetElement.DataContext, item); return view; } public object[] ConvertBack(object value, Type[] targetTypes, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture) { throw new NotSupportedException("Cannot convert back"); } } } I can see that the extension is instantiated and I can see it return the MultiBinding that is used by the Template. I also see the call to the InternalConverter.Convert method, which sees the expected parameters (I see the collection provided by the nested {Binding}) and is successfully able to retrieve the ICollectionView for the incoming collection. The only problem is that FilterInternal never gets called. The template is ultimately being used by a TreeView, if that's relevant. I haven't been able to figure out why the FilterInternal method is not being called and I was hoping somebody might be able to offer some insight.

  • Elusive race condition in Java

    - by nasufara
    I am creating a graphing calculator. In an attempt to squeeze some more performance out of it, I added some multithreaded to the line calculator. Essentially what my current implementation does is construct a thread-safe Queue of X values, then start however many threads it needs, each one calculating a point on the line using the queue to get its values, and then ordering the points using a HashMap when the calculations are done. This implementation works great, and that's not where my race condition is (merely some background info). In examining the performance results from this, I found that the HashMap is a performance bottleneck, since I do that synchronously on one thread. So I figured that ordering each point as its calculated would work best. I tried a PriorityQueue, but that was slower than the HashMap. I ended up creating an algorithm that essentially works like this: I construct a list of X values to calculate, like in my current algorithm. I then copy that list of values into another class, unimaginatively and temporarily named BlockingList, which is responsible for ordering the points as they are calculated. BlockingList contains a put() method, which takes in two BigDecimals as parameters, the first the X value, the second the calculated Y value. put() will only accept a value if the X value is the next one on the list to be accepted in the list of X values, and will block until another thread gives it the next excepted value. For example, since that can be confusing, say I have two threads, Thread-1 and Thread-2. Thread-2 gets the X value 10.0 from the values queue, and Thread-1 gets 9.0. However, Thread-1 completes its calculations first, and calls put() before Thread-2 does. Because BlockingList is expecting to get 10.0 first, and not 9.0, it will block on Thread-1 until Thread-2 finishes and calls put(). Once Thread-2 gives BlockingList 10.0, it notify()s all waiting threads, and expects 9.0 next. This continues until BlockingList gets all of its expected values. (I apologise if that was hard to follow, if you need more clarification, just ask.) As expected by the question title, there is a race condition in here. If I run it without any System.out.printlns, it will sometimes lock because of conflicting wait() and notifyAll()s, but if I put a println in, it will run great. A small implementation of this is included below, and exhibits the same behavior: import java.math.BigDecimal; import java.util.concurrent.ConcurrentLinkedQueue; public class Example { public static void main(String[] args) throws InterruptedException { // Various scaling values, determined based on the graph size // in the real implementation BigDecimal xMax = new BigDecimal(10); BigDecimal xStep = new BigDecimal(0.05); // Construct the values list, from -10 to 10 final ConcurrentLinkedQueue<BigDecimal> values = new ConcurrentLinkedQueue<BigDecimal>(); for (BigDecimal i = new BigDecimal(-10); i.compareTo(xMax) <= 0; i = i.add(xStep)) { values.add(i); } // Contains the calculated values final BlockingList list = new BlockingList(values); for (int i = 0; i < 4; i++) { new Thread() { public void run() { BigDecimal x; // Keep looping until there are no more values while ((x = values.poll()) != null) { PointPair pair = new PointPair(); pair.realX = x; try { list.put(pair); } catch (Exception ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } } } }.start(); } } private static class PointPair { public BigDecimal realX; } private static class BlockingList { private final ConcurrentLinkedQueue<BigDecimal> _values; private final ConcurrentLinkedQueue<PointPair> _list = new ConcurrentLinkedQueue<PointPair>(); public BlockingList(ConcurrentLinkedQueue<BigDecimal> expectedValues) throws InterruptedException { // Copy the values into a new queue BigDecimal[] arr = expectedValues.toArray(new BigDecimal[0]); _values = new ConcurrentLinkedQueue<BigDecimal>(); for (BigDecimal dec : arr) { _values.add(dec); } } public void put(PointPair item) throws InterruptedException { while (item.realX.compareTo(_values.peek()) != 0) { synchronized (this) { // Block until someone enters the next desired value wait(); } } _list.add(item); _values.poll(); synchronized (this) { notifyAll(); } } } } My question is can anybody help me find the threading error? Thanks!

We receive lots of requests from people who are thinking of using BPM to solve a specific problem or in combination with a specific technology to talk to someone who has done it before. These stories are invaluable. Drop down the details of anything you think is relevant with a bit of detail and we will follow up on it. As one good deed deserves another, we will do our best to give you stories if you need them to show that where you are going, others have treaded before. Send your stories to us using this e-mail link and we will share them among other like minded people. If you have delivered a successful implementation in BPM and think it could be reused and applied again in a similar scenario in the same industry or in a similar environment, then we ware keen to know about it and will add it to the solution catalogue. The solution catalogue will showcase successful BPM solutions both inside and outside Oracle. Be in touch with us on this e-mail link and we will make sure to add your solution. Process AcceleratorsFinally if you have specific processes that you are expert on, you have implemented at a customer and you want to work with us on getting these productised, then we would love to know about it. The process accelerator programme is explained in the most recent SOA/BPM Community Newsletter but again feel free to contact us if you want to get involved. Good luck with BPM and let us know how we can help. • MVC Automatic Menu

    - by Nuri Halperin
    An ex-colleague of mine used to call his SQL script generator "Super-Scriptmatic 2000". It impressed our then boss little, but was fun to say and use. We called every batch job and script "something 2000" from that day on. I'm tempted to call this one Menu-Matic 2000, except it's waaaay past 2000. Oh well. The problem: I'm developing a bunch of stuff in MVC. There's no PM to generate mounds of requirements and there's no Ux Architect to create wireframe. During development, things change. Specifically, actions get renamed, moved from controller x to y etc. Well, as the site grows, it becomes a major pain to keep a static menu up to date, because the links change. The HtmlHelper doesn't live up to it's name and provides little help. How do I keep this growing list of pesky little forgotten actions reigned in? The general plan is: Decorate every action you want as a menu item with a custom attribute Reflect out all menu items into a structure at load time Render the menu using as CSS  friendly <ul><li> HTML. The MvcMenuItemAttribute decorates an action, designating it to be included as a menu item: [AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Method, AllowMultiple = true)] public class MvcMenuItemAttribute : Attribute {   public string MenuText { get; set; }   public int Order { get; set; }   public string ParentLink { get; set; }   internal string Controller { get; set; }   internal string Action { get; set; }     #region ctor   public MvcMenuItemAttribute(string menuText) : this(menuText, 0) { } public MvcMenuItemAttribute(string menuText, int order) { MenuText = menuText; Order = order; }       internal string Link { get { return string.Format("/{0}/{1}", Controller, this.Action); } }   internal MvcMenuItemAttribute ParentItem { get; set; } #endregion } The MenuText allows overriding the text displayed on the menu. The Order allows the items to be ordered. The ParentLink allows you to make this item a child of another menu item. An example action could then be decorated thusly: [MvcMenuItem("Tracks", Order = 20, ParentLink = "/Session/Index")] . All pretty straightforward methinks. The challenge with menu hierarchy becomes fairly apparent when you try to render a menu and highlight the "current" item or render a breadcrumb control. Both encounter an  ambiguity if you allow a data source to have more than one menu item with the same URL link. The issue is that there is no great way to tell which link a person click. Using referring URL will fail if a user bookmarked the page. Using some extra query string to disambiguate duplicate URLs essentially changes the links, and also ads a chance of collision with other query parameters. Besides, that smells. The stock ASP.Net sitemap provider simply disallows duplicate URLS. I decided not to, and simply pick the first one encountered as the "current". Although it doesn't solve the issue completely – one might say they wanted the second of the 2 links to be "current"- it allows one to include a link twice (home->deals and products->deals etc), and the logic of deciding "current" is easy enough to explain to the customer. Now that we got that out of the way, let's build the menu data structure: public static List<MvcMenuItemAttribute> ListMenuItems(Assembly assembly) { var result = new List<MvcMenuItemAttribute>(); foreach (var type in assembly.GetTypes()) { if (!type.IsSubclassOf(typeof(Controller))) { continue; } foreach (var method in type.GetMethods()) { var items = method.GetCustomAttributes(typeof(MvcMenuItemAttribute), false) as MvcMenuItemAttribute[]; if (items == null) { continue; } foreach (var item in items) { if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(item.Controller)) { item.Controller = type.Name.Substring(0, type.Name.Length - "Controller".Length); } if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(item.Action)) { item.Action = method.Name; } result.Add(item); } } } return result.OrderBy(i => i.Order).ToList(); } Using reflection, the ListMenuItems method takes an assembly (you will hand it your MVC web assembly) and generates a list of menu items. It digs up all the types, and for each one that is an MVC Controller, digs up the methods. Methods decorated with the MvcMenuItemAttribute get plucked and added to the output list. Again, pretty simple. To make the structure hierarchical, a LINQ expression matches up all the items to their parent: public static void RegisterMenuItems(List<MvcMenuItemAttribute> items) { _MenuItems = items; _MenuItems.ForEach(i => i.ParentItem = items.FirstOrDefault(p => String.Equals(p.Link, i.ParentLink, StringComparison.InvariantCultureIgnoreCase))); } The _MenuItems is simply an internal list to keep things around for later rendering. Finally, to package the menu building for easy consumption: public static void RegisterMenuItems(Type mvcApplicationType) { RegisterMenuItems(ListMenuItems(Assembly.GetAssembly(mvcApplicationType))); } To bring this puppy home, a call in Global.asax.cs Application_Start() registers the menu. Notice the ugliness of reflection is tucked away from the innocent developer. All they have to do is call the RegisterMenuItems() and pass in the type of the application. When you use the new project template, global.asax declares a class public class MvcApplication : HttpApplication and that is why the Register call passes in that type. protected void Application_Start() { AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas(); RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes);   MvcMenu.RegisterMenuItems(typeof(MvcApplication)); }   What else is left to do? Oh, right, render! public static void ShowMenu(this TextWriter output) { var writer = new HtmlTextWriter(output);   renderHierarchy(writer, _MenuItems, null); }   public static void ShowBreadCrumb(this TextWriter output, Uri currentUri) { var writer = new HtmlTextWriter(output); string currentLink = "/" + currentUri.GetComponents(UriComponents.Path, UriFormat.Unescaped);   var menuItem = _MenuItems.FirstOrDefault(m => m.Link.Equals(currentLink, StringComparison.CurrentCultureIgnoreCase)); if (menuItem != null) { renderBreadCrumb(writer, _MenuItems, menuItem); } }   private static void renderBreadCrumb(HtmlTextWriter writer, List<MvcMenuItemAttribute> menuItems, MvcMenuItemAttribute current) { if (current == null) { return; } var parent = current.ParentItem; renderBreadCrumb(writer, menuItems, parent); writer.Write(current.MenuText); writer.Write(" / ");   }     static void renderHierarchy(HtmlTextWriter writer, List<MvcMenuItemAttribute> hierarchy, MvcMenuItemAttribute root) { if (!hierarchy.Any(i => i.ParentItem == root)) return;   writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.Ul); foreach (var current in hierarchy.Where(element => element.ParentItem == root).OrderBy(i => i.Order)) { if (ItemFilter == null || ItemFilter(current)) {   writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.Li); writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Href, current.Link); writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Alt, current.MenuText); writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.A); writer.WriteEncodedText(current.MenuText); writer.RenderEndTag(); // link renderHierarchy(writer, hierarchy, current); writer.RenderEndTag(); // li } } writer.RenderEndTag(); // ul } The ShowMenu method renders the menu out to the provided TextWriter. In previous posts I've discussed my partiality to using well debugged, time test HtmlTextWriter to render HTML rather than writing out angled brackets by hand. In addition, writing out using the actual writer on the actual stream rather than generating string and byte intermediaries (yes, StringBuilder being no exception) disturbs me. To carry out the rendering of an hierarchical menu, the recursive renderHierarchy() is used. You may notice that an ItemFilter is called before rendering each item. I figured that at some point one might want to exclude certain items from the menu based on security role or context or something. That delegate is the hook for such future feature. To carry out rendering of a breadcrumb recursion is used again, this time simply to unwind the parent hierarchy from the leaf node, then rendering on the return from the recursion rather than as we go along deeper. I guess I was stuck in LISP that day.. recursion is fun though.   Now all that is left is some usage! Open your Site.Master or wherever you'd like to place a menu or breadcrumb, and plant one of these calls: <% MvcMenu.ShowBreadCrumb(this.Writer, Request.Url); %> to show a breadcrumb trail (notice lack of "=" after <% and the semicolon). <% MvcMenu.ShowMenu(Writer); %> to show the menu.   As mentioned before, the HTML output is nested <UL> <LI> tags, which should make it easy to style using abundant CSS to produce anything from static horizontal or vertical to dynamic drop-downs.   This has been quite a fun little implementation and I was pleased that the code size remained low. The main crux was figuring out how to pass parent information from the attribute to the hierarchy builder because attributes have restricted parameter types. Once I settled on that implementation, the rest falls into place quite easily.

  • In WPF, Selecting ItemContainerStyle based on data bound content

    - by Bart Roozendaal
    In #WPF you have ItemTemplateSelectors. But, can you also select an ItemContainerStyle based on the datatype of a bound object? I am databinding a scatterview. I want to set some properties of the generated ScatterViewItems based on the object in their DataContext. A mechanism similar to ItemTemplateSelector for styles would be great. Is that at all possible? I am now binding to properties in the objects that I am displaying to get the effect, but that feels like overhead and too complex (and most importantly, something that our XU designers can't do by themselves). This is the XAML that I am using now. Your help is greatly appreciated. <s:ScatterView x:Name="topicsViewer"> <s:ScatterView.ItemTemplateSelector> <local:TopicViewerDataTemplateSelector> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type mvc:S7VideoTopic}"> <Grid> <ContentPresenter Content="{Binding MediaElement}" /> <s:SurfaceButton Visibility="{Binding MailToVisible}" x:Name="mailto" Tag="{Binding Titel}" Click="mailto_Click" HorizontalAlignment="Right" VerticalAlignment="Top" Background="Transparent" Width="62" Height="36"> <Image Source="/Resources/MailTo.png" /> </s:SurfaceButton> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" VerticalAlignment="Bottom" HorizontalAlignment="Center" Height="32"> <s:SurfaceButton Tag="{Binding MediaElement}" x:Name="btnPlay" Click="btnPlay_Click"> <Image Source="/Resources/control_play.png" /> </s:SurfaceButton> <s:SurfaceButton Tag="{Binding MediaElement}" x:Name="btnPause" Click="btnPause_Click"> <Image Source="/Resources/control_pause.png" /> </s:SurfaceButton> <s:SurfaceButton Tag="{Binding MediaElement}" x:Name="btnStop" Click="btnStop_Click"> <Image Source="/Resources/control_stop.png" /> </s:SurfaceButton> </StackPanel> </Grid> </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type mvc:S7ImageTopic}"> <Grid> <ContentPresenter Content="{Binding Resource}" /> <s:SurfaceButton Visibility="{Binding MailToVisible}" x:Name="mailto" Tag="{Binding Titel}" Click="mailto_Click" HorizontalAlignment="Right" VerticalAlignment="Top" Background="Transparent" Width="62" Height="36"> <Image Source="/Resources/MailTo.png" /> </s:SurfaceButton> </Grid> </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type local:Kassa}"> <ContentPresenter Content="{Binding}" Width="300" Height="355" /> </DataTemplate> </local:TopicViewerDataTemplateSelector> </s:ScatterView.ItemTemplateSelector> <s:ScatterView.ItemContainerStyle> <Style TargetType="s:ScatterViewItem"> <Setter Property="MinWidth" Value="200" /> <Setter Property="MinHeight" Value="150" /> <Setter Property="MaxWidth" Value="800" /> <Setter Property="MaxHeight" Value="700" /> <Setter Property="Width" Value="{Binding DefaultWidth}" /> <Setter Property="Height" Value="{Binding DefaultHeight}" /> <Setter Property="s:ScatterViewItem.CanMove" Value="{Binding CanMove}" /> <Setter Property="s:ScatterViewItem.CanScale" Value="{Binding CanScale}" /> <Setter Property="s:ScatterViewItem.CanRotate" Value="{Binding CanRotate}" /> <Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent" /> </Style> </s:ScatterView.ItemContainerStyle> </s:ScatterView> Bart Roozendaal, Sevensteps

  • Multibinding File-Paths into a Button ControlTemplate

    - by Bill
    I am trying to develop an application that uses a number of images that are stored in a seperate remote file location. The file-paths to the UI elements are stored within the Application Settings. Although I understand how to access the images from Applications Settings using a MultiBinding and a value converter, I'm not sure how to integrate the Multibinding into the ImageButton ControlTemplate below. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? <Image.Source> <MultiBinding Converter="{StaticResource MyConverter}"> <Binding Source="{StaticResource Properties.Settings}" Path="Default.pathToInterfaceImages" /> <Binding Source="ScreenSaver.png"></Binding> </MultiBinding> </Image.Source> <Button Click="btn_ScreenSaver_Click" Style="{DynamicResource ThreeImageButton}" local:ThreeImageButton.Image="C:\Skins\ScreenSaver_UP.png" local:ThreeImageButton.MouseOverImage="C:\Skins\ScreenSaver_OVER.png" local:ThreeImageButton.PressedImage="C:\Skins\ScreenSaver_DOWN.png"/> <Style x:Key="ThreeImageButton" TargetType="{x:Type Button}"> <Setter Property="FontSize" Value="10"/> <Setter Property="Height" Value="34"/> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type Button}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" > <Image Name="PART_Image" Source= "{Binding Path=(local:ThreeImageButton.Image), RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type Button}}}" /> </StackPanel> <ControlTemplate.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True"> <Setter Property="Source" Value="{Binding Path=(local:ThreeImageButton.MouseOverImage), RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type Button}}}" TargetName="PART_Image"/> </Trigger> <Trigger Property="IsPressed" Value="True"> <Setter Property="Source" Value="{Binding Path=(local:ThreeImageButton.PressedImage), RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type Button}}}" TargetName="PART_Image"/> </Trigger> <Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="False"> <Setter Property="Source" Value="{Binding Path=(local:ThreeImageButton.Image), RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type Button}}}" TargetName="PART_Image"/> </Trigger> </ControlTemplate.Triggers> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> public class ThreeImageButton : DependencyObject { // Add three new Dependency Properties to the Button Class to hold the // path to each of the images that are bound to the control, displayed // during normal, mouse-over and pressed states. public static readonly DependencyProperty ImageProperty; public static readonly DependencyProperty MouseOverImageProperty; public static readonly DependencyProperty PressedImageProperty; public static ImageSource GetImage(DependencyObject obj) { return (ImageSource)obj.GetValue(ImageProperty); } public static ImageSource GetMouseOverImage(DependencyObject obj) { return (ImageSource)obj.GetValue(MouseOverImageProperty); } public static ImageSource GetPressedImage(DependencyObject obj) { return (ImageSource)obj.GetValue(PressedImageProperty); } public static void SetImage(DependencyObject obj, ImageSource value) { obj.SetValue(ImageProperty, value); } public static void SetMouseOverImage(DependencyObject obj, ImageSource value) { obj.SetValue(MouseOverImageProperty, value); } public static void SetPressedImage(DependencyObject obj, ImageSource value) { obj.SetValue(PressedImageProperty, value); } // Register each property with the control. static ThreeImageButton() { var metadata = new FrameworkPropertyMetadata((ImageSource)null); ImageProperty = DependencyProperty.RegisterAttached("Image", typeof(ImageSource), typeof(ThreeImageButton), metadata); var metadata1 = new FrameworkPropertyMetadata((ImageSource)null); MouseOverImageProperty = DependencyProperty.RegisterAttached("MouseOverImage", typeof(ImageSource), typeof(ThreeImageButton), metadata1); var metadata2 = new FrameworkPropertyMetadata((ImageSource)null); PressedImageProperty = DependencyProperty.RegisterAttached("PressedImage", typeof(ImageSource), typeof(ThreeImageButton), metadata2); } }

  • Dependency Properties and Data Context in Silverlight 3

    - by Noam
    Hello, I am working with Silverlight 3 beta, and am having an issue. I have a page that has a user control that I worte on it. The user control has a dependency property on it. If the user control does not define a data context (hence using the parent's data context), all works well. But if the user control has its own data context, the dependency property's OnPropertyChanged method never gets called. Here is a sample: My Main Page: <UserControl x:Class="TestDepProp.MainPage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:app="clr-namespace:TestDepProp" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Width="400" Height="100"> <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <Border BorderBrush="Blue" BorderThickness="3" CornerRadius="3"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical"> <TextBlock Text="Enter text here:" /> <TextBox x:Name="entryBlock" Text="{Binding Data, Mode=TwoWay}"/> <Button Content="Go!" Click="Button_Click" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Data}" /> </StackPanel> <Border BorderBrush="Blue" BorderThickness="3" CornerRadius="3" Margin="5"> <app:TestControl PropOnControl="{Binding Data}" /> </Border> </StackPanel> </Border> </Grid> </UserControl> Main Page code: using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Controls; namespace TestDepProp { public partial class MainPage : UserControl { public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); MainPageData data = new MainPageData(); this.DataContext = data; } private void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { int i = 1; i++; } } } Main Page's data context: using System.ComponentModel; namespace TestDepProp { public class MainPageData:INotifyPropertyChanged { string _data; public string Data { get { return _data; } set { _data = value; if (PropertyChanged != null) PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("Data")); } } public MainPageData() { Data = "Initial Value"; } #region INotifyPropertyChanged Members public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; #endregion } } Control XAML: <UserControl x:Class="TestDepProp.TestControl" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:app="clr-namespace:TestDepProp" > <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical" Margin="10" > <TextBlock Text="This should change:" /> <TextBlock x:Name="ControlValue" Text="Not Set" /> </StackPanel> </Grid> </UserControl> Contol code: using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Controls; namespace TestDepProp { public partial class TestControl : UserControl { public TestControl() { InitializeComponent(); // Comment out next line for DP to work DataContext = new MyDataContext(); } #region PropOnControl Dependency Property public string PropOnControl { get { return (string)GetValue(PropOnControlProperty); } set { SetValue(PropOnControlProperty, value); } } public static readonly DependencyProperty PropOnControlProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("PropOnControl", typeof(string), typeof(TestControl), new PropertyMetadata(OnPropOnControlPropertyChanged)); private static void OnPropOnControlPropertyChanged(DependencyObject d, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e) { TestControl _TestControl = d as TestControl; if (_TestControl != null) { _TestControl.ControlValue.Text = e.NewValue.ToString(); } } #endregion PropOnControl Dependency Property } } Control's data context: using System.ComponentModel; namespace TestDepProp { public class MyDataContext : INotifyPropertyChanged { #region INotifyPropertyChanged Members public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; #endregion } } To try it out, type something in the text box, and hit the Go button. Comment out the data context in the controls code to see that it starts to work. Hope someone has an idea as to what is going on.

  • Using rounded corners in modern websites with CSS3

    - by nikolaosk
    This is going to be the sixth post in a series of posts regarding HTML 5. You can find the other posts here , here, here , here and here.In this post I will provide a hands-on example on how to use rounded corners (rounded corners in CSS3) in your website. I think this is the feature that is most required in the new modern websites.Most websites look great with their lovely round panels and rounded corner tab style menus. We could achieve that effect earlier but we should resort to complex CSS rules and images. I will show you how to accomplish this great feature with the power of CSS 3.We will not use Javascript.Javascript is required for IE 7, IE 8 and the notorious IE 6. The best solution for implementing corners using CSS and Javascript without using images is Nifty corners cube. There are detailed information how to achieve this in the link I provided. This solution is tested in earlier vesrions of IE (IE 6,IE 7,IE 8) and Opera,Firefox,Safari. In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School.Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor.Two very nice sites that show you what features and specifications are implemented by various browsers and their versions are http://caniuse.com/ and http://html5test.com/. At this times Chrome seems to support most of HTML 5 specifications.Another excellent way to find out if the browser supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 features is to use the Javascript lightweight library Modernizr.In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application. You can use any HTML editor you like.You can use Visual Studio 2012 Express edition. You can download it here.Before I go on with the actual demo I will use the (http://www.caniuse.com) to see the support for web fonts from the latest versions of modern browsers.Please have a look at the picture below. We see that all the latest versions of modern browsers support this feature.We can see that even IE 9 supports this feature.  Let's move on with the actual demo. This is going to be a rather simple demo.I create a simple HTML 5 page. The markup follows and it is very easy to use and understand <!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en">  <head>    <title>HTML 5, CSS3 and JQuery</title>    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" >    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">       </head>  <body>      <div id="header">      <h1>Learn cutting edge technologies</h1>    </div>        <div id="main">          <h2>HTML 5</h2>                        <p id="panel1">            HTML5 is the latest version of HTML and XHTML. The HTML standard defines a single language that can be written in HTML and XML. It attempts to solve issues found in previous iterations of HTML and addresses the needs of Web Applications, an area previously not adequately covered by HTML.          </p>      </div>             </body>  </html>Then I need to write the various CSS rules that style this markup. I will name it style.css   body{        line-height: 38px;        width: 1024px;        background-color:#eee;        text-align:center;      }#panel1 { margin:auto; text-align:left; background-color:#77cdef;width:400px; height:250px; padding:15px;font-size:16px;font-family:tahoma;color:#fff;border-radius: 20px;}Have a look below to see what my page looks like in IE 10. This is possible through the border-radious property. The colored panel has all four corners rounded with the same radius.We can add a border to the rounded corner panel by adding this property declaration in the #panel1,  border:4px #000 solid;We can have even better visual effects if we specify a radius for each corner.This is the updated version of the style.css. body{        line-height: 38px;        width: 1024px;        background-color:#eee;        text-align:center;      }#panel1 { margin:auto; text-align:left; background-color:#77cdef;border:4px #000 solid;width:400px; height:250px; padding:15px;font-size:16px;font-family:tahoma;color:#fff;border-top-left-radius: 20px;border-top-right-radius: 70px;border-bottom-right-radius: 20px;border-bottom-left-radius: 70px;} This is how my page looks in Firefox 15.0.1  In this final example I will show you how to style with CSS 3 (rounded corners) a horizontal navigation menu. This is the new version of the HTML markup<!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en">  <head>    <title>HTML 5, CSS3 and JQuery</title>    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" >    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">       </head>  <body>      <div id="header">      <h1>Learn cutting edge technologies</h1>    </div>        <div id="nav"><ul><li><a class="mymenu" id="activelink" href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8934038#">Main</a></li><li><a class="mymenu" href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8934038#">HTML 5</a></li><li><a class="mymenu" href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8934038#">CSS 3</a></li><li><a class="mymenu" href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8934038#">JQuery</a></li></ul></div>        <div id="main">          <h2>HTML 5</h2>                        <p id="panel1">            HTML5 is the latest version of HTML and XHTML. • JFreeChart CategoryPlot overwrites categories

    - by Christine
    Hi, I am new to using JFreeChart and I'm sure there is a simple solution to my problem . . PROBLEM: I have a chart that shows multiple "events types" along the date X axis. The Y axis shows the "event category". My problem is that only the latest date of an event type is shown for each category. In the example below The chart shows data points for Event Type 1 at June 20th(Category 1) and at June 10th (Category 2). I had also added a data point for June 10th, Category 1 but the June 20th point erases it. I think I am misunderstanding how the CategoryPlot is working. Am I using the wrong type of chart? I thought a scatter chart would be the ticket but it only accepts numerical values. I need to have discrete string categories on my Y-axis. If anyone can point me in the right direction, you would really make my day. Thanks for reading! -Christine (The code below works as-is. It is as simple as I could make it) import java.awt.Dimension; import javax.swing.JPanel; import org.jfree.chart.ChartPanel; import org.jfree.chart.JFreeChart; import org.jfree.chart.axis.CategoryAxis; import org.jfree.chart.axis.DateAxis; import org.jfree.chart.plot.CategoryPlot; import org.jfree.chart.plot.PlotOrientation; import org.jfree.chart.renderer.category.LineAndShapeRenderer; import org.jfree.data.category.CategoryDataset; import org.jfree.data.category.DefaultCategoryDataset; import org.jfree.data.time.Day; import org.jfree.ui.ApplicationFrame; import org.jfree.ui.RefineryUtilities; public class EventFrequencyDemo1 extends ApplicationFrame { public EventFrequencyDemo1(String s) { super(s); CategoryDataset categorydataset = createDataset(); JFreeChart jfreechart = createChart(categorydataset); ChartPanel chartpanel = new ChartPanel(jfreechart); chartpanel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(500, 270)); setContentPane(chartpanel); } private static JFreeChart createChart(CategoryDataset categorydataset) { CategoryPlot categoryplot = new CategoryPlot(categorydataset, new CategoryAxis("Category"), new DateAxis("Date"), new LineAndShapeRenderer(false, true)); categoryplot.setOrientation(PlotOrientation.HORIZONTAL); categoryplot.setDomainGridlinesVisible(true); return new JFreeChart(categoryplot); } private static CategoryDataset createDataset() { DefaultCategoryDataset defaultcategorydataset = new DefaultCategoryDataset(); Day june10 = new Day(10, 6, 2002); Day june20 = new Day(20, 6, 2002); // This event is overwritten by June20th defaultcategorydataset.setValue(new Long(june10.getMiddleMillisecond()), "Event Type 1", "Category 1"); defaultcategorydataset.setValue(new Long(june10.getMiddleMillisecond()), "Event Type 1", "Category 2"); // Overwrites the previous June10th event defaultcategorydataset.setValue(new Long(june20.getMiddleMillisecond()), "Event Type 1", "Category 1"); defaultcategorydataset.setValue(new Long(june20.getMiddleMillisecond()), "Event Type 2", "Category 2"); return defaultcategorydataset; } public static JPanel createDemoPanel() { JFreeChart jfreechart = createChart(createDataset()); return new ChartPanel(jfreechart); } public static void main(String args[]) { EventFrequencyDemo1 eventfrequencydemo1 = new EventFrequencyDemo1("Event Frequency Demo"); eventfrequencydemo1.pack(); RefineryUtilities.centerFrameOnScreen(eventfrequencydemo1); eventfrequencydemo1.setVisible(true); } }

  • Binding menu items to a sitemap.

    - by Ricardo Deano
    Hello all..this is driving me nuts. I have a navigation menu I would like to display based upon user roles (using.net membership) After several hours and headaches (from banging my head against the desk) I was wondering if someone can point me in the error of my ways. Page: <body> <form runat="server"> <div class="page"> <div class="header"> <div class="loginDisplay"> <asp:LoginView ID="HeadLoginView" runat="server" EnableViewState="false"> <AnonymousTemplate> <a href="~/Login.aspx" ID="HeadLoginStatus" runat="server">Log In</a> </AnonymousTemplate> <LoggedInTemplate> Welcome <span class="bold"><asp:LoginName ID="HeadLoginName" runat="server" /></span>! [ <asp:LoginStatus ID="HeadLoginStatus" runat="server" LogoutAction="Redirect" LogoutText="Log Out" LogoutPageUrl="~/Open/Close.aspx"/> ] </LoggedInTemplate> </asp:LoginView> </div> <div class="clear hideSkiplink"> <asp:Menu ID="NavigationMenu" runat="server" CssClass="menu" IncludeStyleBlock="False" Orientation="Horizontal" DataSourceID="AugustSiteMap" /> <asp:SiteMapDataSource ID="AugustSiteMap" runat="server" ShowStartingNode="false"/> </div> </div> SiteMap: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <siteMap xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/AspNet/SiteMap-File-1.0" > <siteMapNode url="~/Default.aspx" title="Home" description="Home"> <siteMapNode title="Open Pages" description="Open Pages"> <siteMapNode url="~/Open/Login.aspx" title="Login Page" description="Login Page" roles="*"/> <siteMapNode url="~/Open/Close.aspx" title="Thank you for using Valpak Data Solutions Online Reporting" description="Thank you for using Valpak Data Solutions Online Reporting" roles="*"/> </siteMapNode> <siteMapNode title="Logged In Open Pages" description="Logged In Open Pages"> <siteMapNode url="~/Landing.aspx" title="Landing Page" description="Landing Page" roles="*"/> <siteMapNode url="~/ContactUs.aspx" title="Contact Us" description="Contact Us" roles="*"/> </siteMapNode> <siteMapNode title="Restricted Pages" description="Resticted Pages"> <siteMapNode url="~/Restricted/ProductSearch.aspx" title=" Product Search" description=" Product Search" roles="*"/> <siteMapNode url="~/Restricted/ReportOutput.aspx" title="Report Output" description="Report Output" roles="Admin"/> </siteMapNode> </siteMapNode> </siteMap> Webconfig: <roleManager enabled="true" /> <siteMap defaultProvider="XmlSiteMapProvider" enabled="true"> <providers> <add name="XmlSiteMapProvider" description="AugustSiteMap" type="System.Web.XmlSiteMapProvider " siteMapFile="AugustSiteMap.sitemap" securityTrimmingEnabled="true" /> </providers> </siteMap> How can I ensure that when the user is logged in, the appropriate menu items are displayed on the Landing page? Please excuse my ignorance. Still new to all of this and my current method of 'trial and error' has seen me reach suicide levels this morning!

  • Problems with multiple setIntervals running simultaneously

    - by Roel V.
    Hello, My first post here. I want to make a horizontal menu with submenu's sliding down on mouseover. I know I could use jQuery but this is to practice my javascript skills. I use the following code: var up = new Array() var down = new Array() var submenustart function titleover(headmenu, inter) { submenu = headmenu.lastChild up[inter] = window.clearInterval(up[inter]) down[inter] = window.setInterval("slidedown(submenu)",1) } function slidedown(submenu) { if(submenu.offsetTop < submenustart) { submenu.style.top = submenu.offsetTop + 1 + "px" } } function titleout(headmenu, inter) { submenu = headmenu.lastChild down[inter] = window.clearInterval(down[inter]) up[inter] = window.setInterval("slideup(submenu)", 1) } function slideup(submenu) { if(submenu.offsetTop > submenustart - submenu.clientHeight + 1) { submenu.style.top = submenu.offsetTop - 1 + "px" } } The variable submenustart gets appointed a value in another function which is not relevant for my question. HTML looks like this: <table class="hoofding" id="hoofding"> <tr> <td onmouseover="titleover(this, 0)" onmouseout="titleout(this, 0)"><a href="#" class="hoofdinglink" id="hoofd1">AAAA</a> <table class="menu"> <tr><td><a href="...">1111</a></td></tr> <tr><td><a href="...">2222</a></td></tr> <tr><td><a href="...">3333</a></td></tr> </table></td> <td onmouseover="titleover(this, 1)" onmouseout="titleout(this, 1)"><a href="#" class="hoofdinglink">BBBB</a> <table class="menu"> <tr><td><a href="...">1111</a></td></tr> <tr><td><a href="...">2222</a></td></tr> <tr><td><a href="...">3333</a></td></tr> <tr><td><a href="...">4444</a></td></tr> <tr><td><a href="...">5555</a></td></tr> </table></td> ... </tr> </table> What happens is the following: If I go over and out (for ex) menu A it works fine. If i go now over menu B the interval applied to A is now applied to B. There are now 2 interval functions applied to B. The one originally for A and a new one triggered by the mouseover on B. If I would go to A all the intervals are now applied to A. I have been searching for hours but and I am completely stuck. Thanks in advance.

  • WFP: How do you properly Bind a DependencyProperty to the GUI

    - by Robert Ross
    I have the following class (abreviated for simplicity). The app it multi-threaded so the Set and Get are a bit more complicated but should be ok. namespace News.RSS { public class FeedEngine : DependencyObject { public static readonly DependencyProperty _processing = DependencyProperty.Register("Processing", typeof(bool), typeof(FeedEngine), new FrameworkPropertyMetadata(true, FrameworkPropertyMetadataOptions.AffectsRender)); public bool Processing { get { return (bool)this.Dispatcher.Invoke( DispatcherPriority.Normal, (DispatcherOperationCallback)delegate { return GetValue(_processing); }, Processing); } set { this.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(DispatcherPriority.Normal, (SendOrPostCallback)delegate { SetValue(_processing, value); }, value); } } public void Poll() { while (Running) { Processing = true; //Do my work to read the data feed from remote source Processing = false; Thread.Sleep(PollRate); } // } } } Next I have my main form as the following: <Window x:Class="News.Main" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:converter="clr-namespace:News.Converters" xmlns:local="clr-namespace:News.Lookup" xmlns:rss="clr-namespace:News.RSS" Title="News" Height="521" Width="927" Initialized="Window_Initialized" Closing="Window_Closing" > <Window.Resources> <ResourceDictionary> <converter:BooleanConverter x:Key="boolConverter" /> <converter:ArithmeticConverter x:Key="arithConverter" /> ... </ResourceDictionary> </Window.Resources> <DockPanel Name="dockPanel1" SnapsToDevicePixels="False" > <ToolBarPanel Height="37" Name="toolBarPanel" Orientation="Horizontal" DockPanel.Dock="Top" > <ToolBarPanel.Children> <Button DataContext="{DynamicResource FeedEngine}" HorizontalAlignment="Right" Name="btnSearch" ToolTip="Search" Click="btnSearch_Click" IsEnabled="{Binding Path=Processing, Converter={StaticResource boolConverter}}"> <Image Width="32" Height="32" Name="imgSearch" Source="{Resx ResxName=News.Properties.Resources, Key=Search}" /> </Button> ... </DockPanel> </Window> As you can see I set the DataContext to FeedEngine and Bind IsEnabled to Processing. I have also tested the boolConverter separately and it functions (just applies ! (Not) to a bool). Here is my Main window code behind in case it helps to debug. namespace News { /// <summary> /// Interaction logic for Main.xaml /// </summary> public partial class Main : Window { public FeedEngine _engine; List<NewsItemControl> _newsItems = new List<NewsItemControl>(); Thread _pollingThread; public Main() { InitializeComponent(); this.Show(); } private void Window_Initialized(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Load current Feed data. _engine = new FeedEngine(); ThreadStart start = new ThreadStart(_engine.Poll); _pollingThread = new Thread(start); _pollingThread.Start(); } } } Hope someone can see where I missed a step. Thanks.

  • jQuery UI Dialog problem if modal is set to TRUE

    - by VansFannel
    Hello! I'm developing an ASP.NET WebForm application with Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and C#. I have the following ASPX page: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" > <head runat="server"> <title></title> <script src="js/jquery-1.3.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="js/jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $("#dialog").dialog({ autoOpen: false, modal: true, buttons: { 'Ok': function() { __doPostBack('TreeNew', ''); $(this).dialog('close'); }, Cancel: function() { $(this).dialog('close'); } }, close: function() { }, open: function(type, data) { $(this).parent().appendTo("form"); } }); }); function ShowDialog() { $('#dialog').dialog('open'); } </script> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div> <asp:Button ID="TreeNew" runat="server" Text="Nuevo" OnClientClick="ShowDialog();return false;" onclick="TreeNew_Click"/> <asp:Label ID="Message" runat="server"></asp:Label> <div id="dialog_target"></div> <div id="dialog" title="Select content type"> <p id="validateTips">All form fields are required.</p> <asp:RadioButtonList ID="ContentTypeList" runat="server"> <asp:ListItem Value="1">Text</asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Value="2">Image</asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Value="3">Audio</asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Value="4">Video</asp:ListItem> </asp:RadioButtonList> </div> </div> <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server"> </asp:ScriptManager> </form> </body> </html> When modal is set to true the page stars to grow (I know that because both scroll bars are getting smaller, vertical bar faster than horizontal bar). Looking inside page source code I see that the following div is outside forms tag: <div class="ui-widget-overlay" style="z-index: 1001; width: 1280px; height: 65089px;" jQuery1267345392312="20"/> If I set modal to false, the error doesn't happen. I think the problem is that the div working as modal is outside the form. What do you think?
