  I'm using the :!grep "tag1" filename | grep "tag2" filename | grep -n "tag3 or more" filename command in vim to search for my code snippets based on their tags (a simple comment at the top of a snippet) in one big file. I use snippets to remember tricky things. This is painful to write out each time. I'd like to make an alias, or function to do something like this: :!greptag tag1 tag2 ... tag39 And it should search the current doc and return the lines with all the tags on them. Vim is set to interactive shell mode so that it can parse my bashrc for aliases/functions. set shellcmdflag=-ic How can I construct a function that allows for variable arguments like this in bash?

  Something like this (yes, this doesn't deal with some edge cases - that's not the point): int CountDigits(int num) { int count = 1; while (num >= 10) { count++; num /= 10; } return count; } What's your opinion about this? That is, using function arguments as local variables. Both are placed on the stack, and pretty much identical performance wise, I'm wondering about the best-practices aspects of this. I feel like an idiot when I add an additional and quite redundant line to that function consisting of int numCopy = num, however it does bug me. What do you think? Should this be avoided?

  What's the best way to center icons on a line when the icons are smaller than the line height? For example (styles inline for easier reading): <div style="line-height: 20px"> <img style="width: 12px; height: 12px;"/> Blah blah blah </div> I want the img to be centered on a single line of the div, above. That is, even if the text wrapped to multiple lines, the image would be centered against a single line. Ideally, the solution would not involve setting margings/paddings on the image and would work even if I didn't know the line-height. • Getting unevaluated tcl arguments

  What I want to do is parse an argument to a tcl proc as a string without any evaluation. For example if I had a trivial proc that just prints out it's arguments: proc test { args } { puts "the args are $args" } What I'd like to do is call it with: test [list [expr 1+1] [expr 2+2]] And NOT have tcl evaluate the [list [expr 1+1] [expr 2+2]]. Or even if it evaluated it I'd still like to have the original command line. Thus with the trivial "test" proc above I'd like to be able to return: the args are [list [expr 1+1] [expr 2+2]] Is this possible in tcl 8.4 ? Thank you. -MP

  I'm running into problems trying to pass absolute URIs as parameters with clean URLs enabled. I've got hook_menu() set up like this: function mymodule_menu() { return array( 'page/%' = array( 'title' = 'DBpedia Display Test', 'page callback' = 'mymodule_dbpedia_display', 'page arguments' = array(1), ), ); } and in the page callback: function mymodule_dbpedia_display($uri) { // Make an HTTP request for this URI // and then render some things return $output; } What I'm hoping to do is somehow pass full URIs (e.g. "http://dbpedia.org/resource/Coffee") to my page callback.   I was playing around with some code and realized that it is possible to overwrite the argument to a t-sql function. i.e., create function someFn(@date date) as begin if @date is null set @date = getdate() will set @date to be today's date if the argument was null. This appears only to make any sense if t-sql is treating their arguments as references not values. I realized that I don't actually know what the t-sql rules are for cases like this and was hoping someone could elaborate what is going on here. (I don't ever recall seeing any value vs. reference discussion with respect to t-sql code for that matter actually..)

• Intersection of line and rectangle with maximum segment length

  I have a vector represented by the slope m. Then there is rectangle (assume axis aligned), which is represented by top-left and bottom-right corner. Of course, there may be many lines with slope m and intersecting the given rectangle. The problem is to find out the line whose length of line intercept inside the rectangle is maximum among all such lines. i.e., if the line intersects rectangle at P1 and P2, then the problem is to find the equation of line for which length of P1P2 is maximum. I proceeded like this. Let the line is: y = m*x + c. Then find out the intersection with each side of rectangle and finding out the maxima for distance function between each pair of points. But it will only give me the length of line segment and there seem to be many corner cases to handle. Could anyone please suggest a better way to do this. Thanks in advance.

  I have a program that works when, a file is opened with it using the right click menu in explorer. But if I select multiple files and then right click and open with my program then it opens multiple instances of my program, instead of just passing the multiple files as arguments to a single instance. The program is written in vb.net but is not a windows form, it is just a module, so I can to tick the Single instance option in the properties in Visual Studio. So how do I open multiple files from explorer context menu in a single instance.

  A colleague of mine states that booleans as method arguments are not acceptable. They shall be replaced by enumerations. At first I did not see any benefit, but he gave me an example. What's easier to understand? file.writeData( data, true ); Or enum WriteMode { Append, Overwrite }; file.writeData( data, Append ); Now I got it! ;-) This is definitely an example where an enumeration as second parameter makes the code much more readable. So, what's your opinion on this topic?

• Can I pass an array as arguments to a method with variable arguments in Java?

  I'd like to be able to create a function like: class A { private String extraVar; public String myFormat(String format, Object ... args){ return String.format(format, extraVar, args); } } The problem here is that args is treated as Object[] in the method myFormat, and thus is a single argument to String.format, while I'd like every single Object in args to be passed as a new argument. Since String.format is also a method with variable arguments, this should be possible. If this is not possible, is there a method like String.format(String format, Object[] args)? In that case I could prepend extraVar to args using a new array and pass it to that method.

• Ubuntu 10.04 Server on Hyper-V Server R2 has sluggish install and command line

  I've installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 (64 bit) on a Hyper-V Server R2. I've encountered two issues that I think are related: Very slow install Very slow command prompt The text-mode installer goes through a series of text-based prompt windows. It takes 7-10 seconds for each of these windows to draw on the screen. The end result is that every time I answer a prompt and hit enter I wait for 15 seconds while the screen redraws line by line. I can literally see each line of text being drawn (like the old 300 baud modems days). Once done installing, scrolling on the command line is super slow. For instance, if a simple command, like "ls", causes the screen to scroll, it will scroll very slowly. This happens on a fresh install. The server functions as a LAMP server and an OpenSSH server, but that's it (I don't even have any Virtual Hosts set up yet). AND this only happens on the Virtual Machine console. I access the console through Hyper-V Manager and don't have this problem on any of my other Virtual Machines. Also, this problem does NOT happen when accessing a shell through OpenSSH. How can I improve this performance issue?

• Connecting to MySQL Server from PHP Command Line (MAMP)

  First of all, I'm using Mac OSX 1.6, MAMP 1.9, PHP 5.3.4, and MySQL 5.1.44. I'm in the process of setting up a video encoding service for a site using Chris Boulton's PHP-Resque and Redis. Once the worker process is fired and the videos have been encoded, I need to save their locations to a mysql database. The php script is being run from the shell, so that is where the issue begins. I even ran a search on my machine for "3306" to find where it's being set, but because that's the normal default, I'm guessing it's not being set explicitly. Any clues on how to fix this rather challenging error?

• Watchguard Firebox "split" fibre optic line into 2 interfaces

  We have a requirement on our Watchguard Firebox XTM505 to be able to split our incoming external interface, in this case a fibre optic dedicated leased line, 100/100. We use the line in our office of approx 30 machines however we also re-sell to an external company who utilise it to provide wireless internet solutions to the public. The current infrastructure is as follows: Data in (Leased Line) - Juniper SRX210 managed by ISP - 1 cable out into unmanaged Netgear switch - 1 cable into our firewall and office network, 1 cable to our external providers core router managed by them. We have been informed that having the unmanaged switch in the position it is poses a security risk and that a good option would be to get our Watchguard Firewall to perform the split, by separating our office onto a trusted interface, and by "passing through" the external line to their managed router. It is alleged that the Watchguard is capable of doing this and also rate limiting the interfaces, i.e. 20mbps for the trusted interface and 80mbps for the "pass-through", however Watchguard technical support don't seem to be able to understand what we're trying to achieve. Can anyone provide any advice on whether this is possible on a Watchguard device and how or perhaps if there's a better way of achieving this, perhaps with a managed switch instead of unmanaged?   I have a Document class, Intro class and Nav class. The Intro class runs first, then sends a custom dispatch event to run the Nav class, but I'm getting this error: removed Intro ArgumentError: Error #1063: Argument count mismatch on com.secrettowriting.StanPlayer.ui::Navigation/addNav().   When I executed xl2tpd I amhaving following error. # xl2tpd -D xl2tpd[845]: parse_config: line 13: data 'ipsec sared=yes' occurs with no context xl2tpd[845]: init: Unable to load config file When I remove the "line 13" I having same error with "Line 14" thefore I do not think that the problem is about "ipsec sared" Here is my configuration file xl2tpd.conf. • Bash: Reset and Clear Commands

  I have been using the command: reset to clear my terminal. Although I am pretty sure this is not what I should be doing. Reset, as the name suggests resets your entire terminal (changes lots of stuff). Here is what I want: I basically want to use the command clear. However if you clear and then scroll up you still get tonnes of stuff from before. In general this is not a problem however I am looking at gross logs that are long and I want to make sure that I am just viewing the most recent one. I know that I could use more or something like that but I prefer this approach.

• Hybrid Shutdown in Windows 8

  Referring to this article published September 8, 2011, it gives instructions on how to to do a full (non-hybrid) shutdown in Windows 8 from the command line. We have an option in the UI to revert back to the Windows 7 shutdown/cold boot behavior, or since that’s likely a fairly infrequent thing, you can use the new /full switch on shutdown.exe. From a cmd prompt, run: shutdown /s /full / t 0 to invoke an immediate full shutdown. shutdown /s /full /t 0 I tried this in W8 Enterprise RTM trial, but did not work, so I did a shutdown /? and noticed they have changed the command for a Full shutdown It appears the /s switch now does the full shutdown as explained in the MS article, and the /hybrid switch does the hybrid shutdown for fast startup. Can anyone confirm this change in other RTM versions of Windows 8? Any Microsoft docs on this change are welcome.

• Mac - Run java program at launch

  I want to launch a java program (server program) at computer start up. I can run it from the command line perfectly. I created /Library/Server/startFS.sh. The file is executable by root and contains: cd /Library/Server/FiloSync /usr/bin/java -jar /Library/Server/FiloSync/filosync-server-latest.jar -p 7000 -s 7001 I can't get my launchd plist included here, the formatting is all off. I can run it fine from the command line: './startFS.sh' but when I put create the plist (via Lingon), nothing happens. Now, when run, it outputs a few lines to the console. Might that be problem?? I have tried prepending 'nohup' and post pending '&', but no combination seems to work. Help please.

• Bash color prompt and long commands

  I'm colorizing parts of my bash prompt using ANSI escape sequences. This works great, until the command I'm currently typing in is long enough that it has to wrap. Instead of the rest of the command displaying on the next line, it wraps back to column 1 of the current line, overwriting the beginning of the prompt. I get that behavior with this prompt: export PS1="[\u][\033[0;32;40mdemo \033[0;33;40m1.5.40.b\033[0;37;40m] \w> \033[0m" but it works correctly with the same prompt, ANSI sequences remove: export PS1="[\u][demo 1.5.40.b] \w> " I'm connecting using the current version of Putty, with default Putty settings. The OS is Ubuntu 8.10.
