• Enable export to XML via HTTP on a large number of models with child relations

- by Vasil
I've a large number of models (120+) and I would like to let users of my application export all of the data from them in XML format. I looked at django-piston, but I would like to do this with minimum code. Basically I'd like to have something like this: GET /export/applabel/ModelName/ Would stream all instances of ModelName in applabel together with it's tree of related objects . I'd like to do this without writing code for each model. What would be the best way to do this?

• Errors in Decimal Calcs within def clean method?

- by allanhenderson
I'm attempting a few simple calculations in a def clean method following validation (basically spitting out a euro conversion of retrieved uk product price on the fly). I keep getting a TypeError. Full error reads: Cannot convert {'product': , 'invoice': , 'order_discount': Decimal("0.00"), 'order_price': {...}, 'order_adjust': None, 'order_value': None, 'DELETE': False, 'id': 92, 'quantity': 8} to Decimal so I guess django is passing through the entire cleaned_data form to Decimal method. Not sure where I'm going wrong - the code I'm working with is: def clean_order_price(self): cleaned_data = self.cleaned_data data = self.data order_price = cleaned_data.get("order_price") if not order_price: try: existing_price = ProductCostPrice.objects.get(supplier=data['supplier'], product_id=cleaned_data['product'], is_latest=True) except ProductCostPrice.DoesNotExist: existing_price = None if not existing_price: raise forms.ValidationError('No match found, please enter new price') else: if data['invoice_type'] == 1: return existing_price.cost_price_gross elif data['invoice_type'] == 2: exchange = EuroExchangeRate.objects.latest('exchange_date') calc = exchange.exchange_rate * float(existing_price.cost_price_gross) calc = Decimal(str(calc)) return calc return cleaned_data If the invoice is of type 2 (a euro invoice) then the system should grab the latest exchange rate and apply that to the matching UK pound price pulled through to get euro result. Should performing a decimal conversion be a problem within def clean method? Thanks

• Elegant solution for multiple forms on single page

- by NFicano
I'm building a web application (in Django) that will accept a search criteria and display a report - once the user is satisfied with the results, save both the criteria and a reference to these objects back to the database. The problem I'm having is finding an elegant solution for having 2 forms: Display (GET) the results of their criteria. Enter in some descriptions, and save (POST) everything back to the database. I'm leaning towards AJAX for the GET stuff and a POST for the save, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't a more elegant solution first.

• Indexing a method return (depending on Internationalization)

- by Hedde
Consider a django model with an IntegerField with some choices, e.g. COLORS = ( (0, _(u"Blue"), (1, _(u"Red"), (2, _(u"Yellow"), ) class Foo(models.Model): # ...other fields... color = models.PositiveIntegerField(choices=COLOR, verbose_name=_(u"color")) My current (haystack) index: class FooIndex(SearchIndex): text = CharField(document=True, use_template=True) color = CharField(model_attr='color') def prepare_color(self, obj): return obj.get_color_display() site.register(Product, ProductIndex) This obviously only works for keyword "yellow", but not for any (available) translations. Question: What's would be a good way to solve this problem? (indexing method returns based on the active language) What I have tried: I created a function that runs a loop over every available language (from settings) appending any translation to a list, evaluating this against the query, pre search. If any colors are matched it converts them backwards into their numeric representation to evaluate against obj.color, but this feels wrong.

• Not quite nested inlines?

- by Lynden Shields
Not quite sure what to call this, it's not quite nested inlines, but is probably related. I have a 3 level hierarchy of objects, A one-to-many B one-to-many C. Therefore, every C implicitly also belongs to an A. class A(models.Model): stuff = models.CharField("Stuff", max_length=50) class B(models.Model): a = models.ForeignKey(A) class C(models.Model): b = models.ForeignKey(B) I would like all C's that belong to an A to be listed on the admin page for A in an in-line. They do not have to show which B they belong to on the same page. Is this possible or is it the same problem as nested inlines anyway? If it's possible, how do I do it? I'm using django 1.3

• In ASP.NET MVC (3.0/Razor), do you prefer multiple views, or conditionals within views? Why?

- by Chad
For my new web app, I'm debating on using multiple views, or conditionals within views. An example scenario would be showing different info to users who are authenticated vs non-authenticated. This could be handled a couple ways. In the controller, check IsAuthenticated and return a view based on that In the view, check IsAuthenticated and show blocks of info based on that Pros of multiple views: Smaller, less complicated view - next to no logic in the view Pros of single views: less view files to maintain The obvious cons are the opposites of the pros: more files to maintain or more complicated view files. Which do you prefer? Why? Any pros/cons I haven't outlined here? Update: Assume each view uses a layout page and partial views to abstract the obviously repetitive code.

• Clean Method for a ModelForm in a ModelFormSet made by modelformset_factory

- by Salyangoz
I was wondering if my approach is right or not. Assuming the Restaurant model has only a name. forms.py class BaseRestaurantOpinionForm(forms.ModelForm): opinion = forms.ChoiceField(choices=(('yes', 'yes'), ('no', 'no'), ('meh', 'meh')), required=False, )) class Meta: model = Restaurant fields = ['opinion'] views.py class RestaurantVoteListView(ListView): queryset = Restaurant.objects.all() template_name = "restaurants/list.html" def dispatch(self, request, *args, **kwargs): if request.POST: queryset = self.request.POST.dict() #clean here return HttpResponse(json.dumps(queryset), content_type="application/json") def get_context_data(self, **kwargs): context = super(EligibleRestaurantsListView, self).get_context_data(**kwargs) RestaurantFormSet = modelformset_factory( Restaurant, form=BaseRestaurantOpinionForm ) extra_context = { 'eligible_restaurants' : self.get_eligible_restaurants(), 'forms' : RestaurantFormSet(), } context.update(extra_context) return context Basically I'll be getting 3 voting buttons for each restaurant and then I want to read the votes. I was wondering from where/which clean function do I need to call to get something like: { ('3' : 'yes'), ('2' : 'no') } #{ 'restaurant_id' : 'vote' } This is my second/third question so tell me if I'm being unclear. Thanks.

• Looking into ASP.Net MVC 4.0 Mobile Development - part 1

- by nikolaosk
In this post I will be looking how ASP.Net MVC 4.0 helps us to create web solutions that target mobile devices. We all experience the magic that is the World Wide Web through mobile devices. Millions of people around the world, use tablets and smartphones to view the contents of websites,e-shops and portals.ASP.Net MVC 4.0 includes a new mobile project template and the ability to render a different set of views for different types of devices. There is a new feature that is called browser overriding which allows us to control exactly what a user is going to see from your web application regardless of what type of device he is using. In order to follow along this post you must have Visual Studio 2012 and .Net Framework 4.5 installed in your machine.Download and install VS 2012 using this link.My machine runs on Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012 works just fine.It will work fine in Windows 7 as well so do not worry if you do not have the latest Microsoft operating system.1) Launch VS 2012 and create a new Web Forms application by going to File - >New Project - > ASP.Net MVC 4 Web Application and then click OKHave a look at the picture below 2) From the available templates select Mobile Application and then click OK.Have a look at the picture below 3) When I run the application I get the mobile view of the page. I would like to show you what a typical ASP.Net MVC 4.0 application looks like. So I will create a new simple ASP.Net MVC 4.0 Web Application. When I run the application I get the normal page view.Have a look at the picture below. On the left is the mobile view and on the right the normal view. As you can see we have more or less the same content in our mobile application (log in,register) compared with the normal ASP.Net MVC 4.0 application but it is optimised for mobile devices. 4) Let me explain how and when the mobile view is selected and finally rendered. There is a feature in MVC 4.0 that is called Display Modes and with this feature the runtime will select a view.If we have 2 views e.g contact.mobile.cshtml and contact.cshtml in our application the Controller at some point will instruct the runtime to select and render a view named contact. The runtime will look at the browser making the request and will determine if it is a mobile browser or a desktop browser. So if there is a request from my IPhone Safari browser for a particular site, if there is a mobile view the MVC 4.0 will select it and render it. If there is not a mobile view, the normal view will be rendered.5) In the ASP.Net MVC 4.0 (Internet application) I created earlier (not the first project which was a mobile one) I can run it once more and see how it looks on the browser. If I want to view it with a mobile browser I must download one emulator like Opera Mobile. You can download Opera Mobile hereWhen I run the application I get the same view in both the desktop and the mobile browser. That was to be expected. Have a look at the picture below 6) Then I create another version of the _Layout.mobile.cshtml view in the Shared folder.I simply copy and paste the _Layout.cshtml into the same folder and then rename it to _Layout.mobile.cshtml and then just alter the contents of the _Layout.mobile.cshtml.When I run again the application I get a different view on the desktop browser and a different one on the Opera mobile browser.Have a look at the picture below ?he Controller will instruct the ASP.Net runtime to select and render a view named _Layout.mobile.cshtml when the request will come from a mobile browser.?he runtime knows that a browser is a mobile one through the ASP.Net browser capability provider. Hope it helps!!!

• Ban HTML comments from your pages and views

- by Bertrand Le Roy
Too many people don’t realize that there are other options than <!-- --> comments to annotate HTML. These comments are harmful because they are sent to the client and thus make your page heavier than it needs to be. When doing ASP.NET, a simple drop-in replacement is server comments, which are delimited by <%-- --%> instead of <!-- -->. Those server comments are visible in your source code, but will never be rendered to the client. Here’s a simple way to sanitize a web site. From Visual Studio, hit CTRL+H to bring the search and replace dialog. Choose “Replace in Files” from the second meny on top of the dialog. Open the find options, check “use” and make sure “Regular expressions” are selected. Use “*.aspx;*.ascx;” as the file types to examine. Choose “Entire Solution” under “Look in”. Here’s the expression to search for comments: \<!--{[^-]*}--\> And here’s the replacement string: <%--\1--%> I usually use the “Find Next” and “Replace” buttons rather than the more brutal “Replace All” in order to not apply the fix blindingly. Once this is done, I do a second manual pass of finds with the same expression to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

• Composite Moon Map Offers Stunning Views of the Lunar Surface [Astronomy]

- by Jason Fitzpatrick
Researchers at Arizona State University have stitched together a massive high-resolution map of the moon; seen the moon in astounding detail. Using images fro the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) they carefully stitch a massive map of the moon with a higher resolution than the public has ever seen before: The WAC has a pixel scale of about 75 meters, and with an average altitude of 50 km, a WAC image swath is 70 km wide across the ground-track. Because the equatorial distance between orbits is about 30 km, there is nearly complete orbit-to-orbit stereo overlap all the way around the Moon, every month. Using digital photogrammetric techniques, a terrain model was computed from this stereo overlap. Hit up the link below to check out the images and the process they used. • Tracking unique views for a site showing my advertisements [on hold]

- by user580950
I am in trouble. I placed and advertisement on a website in 2012. The website said they got 950,000 unique visits each month. Early in 2012 I advertised with them. The advertisement didn't worked out. I checked in 2-3 months time and I saw that the unique visitors on the site was 8,000 at that time. I immediately closed the account. I don't remember which site I used to check the unique visitors. The advertising company has filed a dispute against me. So is there any tool that can show me the 2012 stats for any website? I tried Google Trends but it doesn't show statistics.

• Read Committed isolation level, indexed views and locking behavior

- by Michael Zilberstein
From BOL, " Key-Range Locking " article: Key-range locks protect a range of rows implicitly included in a record set being read by a Transact-SQL statement while using the serializable transaction isolation level . The serializable isolation level requires that any query executed during a transaction must obtain the same set of rows every time it is executed during the transaction. A key range lock protects this requirement by preventing other transactions from inserting new rows whose...(read more)

• Why to avoid SELECT * from tables in your Views

• I’m offended by your antisemantic views

- by Brian Schroer
CSS class names should usually be “semantic” (describing the meaning of the styled areas, e.g. “article-title”, “author-info”, “errror-message”, not “structural” (e.g. “left-side-navbar”, “small-title”). …and they definitely shouldn’t explicitly describe the styling. I’ve seen a class names like “bold-red-12pt”. If you’re going to do that, you might as well just use inline font tags. This article explains it much better than I can…

• Google Analytics goal funnel does not recognize virtual page views

- by Webber Smith
I have a setup wizard with 3 steps. Since I'm using AJAX each step uses a virtual pageview with an appropriate URL for each step (see below). The pageviews are being recorded in the Content section of Google Analytics but the Goal Funnel still shows zero for each step. I've tried advise on other forums such as... Make sure Goal URL is set to Exact match Make sure no steps or the Goal URL are a parent directory of any other steps. For example, don't track /wizard/ as a Goal/step and track /wizard/step2/. Not sure why this would be a problem since it is an exact match, but it shouldn't hurt so I tried it... Require (or don't require - tried both) the first step in the funnel ...but none of these seem to work. Thoughts? Goal Settings Exact match : "/wizard/setup-complete/" Funnel Step 1 : "/wizard/step1/" Step 2 : "/wizard/step2/" Step 3 : "/wizard/step3/"

• Two views of Federation: inside out, and outside in

- by Darin Pendergraft
IDM customers that I speak to have spent a lot of time thinking about enterprise SSO - asking your employees to log in to multiple systems, each with distinct hard to guess (translation: hard to remember) passwords that fit the corporate security policy for length and complexity is a strategy that is just begging for a lot of help-desk password reset calls. So forward thinking organizations have implemented SSO for as many systems as possible. With the mix of Enterprise Apps moving to the cloud, it makes sense to continue this SSO strategy by Federating with those cloud apps and services. Organizations maintain control, since employee access to the externally hosted apps is provided via the enterprise account. If the employee leaves, their access to the cloud app is terminated when their enterprise account is disabled. The employees don't have to remember another username and password - so life is good. From the outside in - I am excited about the increasing use of Social Sign-on - or BYOI (Bring your own Identity). The convenience of single-sign on is extended to customers/users/prospects when organizations enable access to business services using a social ID. The last thing I want when visiting a website or blog is to create another account. So using my Google or Twitter ID is a very nice quick way to get access without having to go through a registration process that creates another username/password that I have to try to remember. The convenience of not having to maintain multiple passwords is obvious, whether you are an employee or customer - and the security benefit of not having lots of passwords to lose or forget is there as well. Are enterprises allowing employees to use their personal (social) IDs for enterprise apps? Not yet, but we are moving in the right direction, and we will get there some day.

• Entity Framework 4 - Generating Entities based on Views

- by geekrutherford
Just a quick post regarding a common issue and fix... When attempting to add a view as an entity to your model the EF generator may complain that it is unable to find or infer a primary key on your view. As a result, it will not add it to the model. The quick fix is to add the following to which ever column you wish to be the primary key within your view: ISNLL(TableA.ColumnA, -999) myPrimaryKeyColumnName Adding this will allow the EF generator to infer the primary key and add the view as an entity to your model.
