  • Getting the current item number or index when using will_paginate in rails app

    - by Rich
I have a rails app that stores movies watched, books read, etc. The index page for each type lists paged collections of all its items, using will_paginate to bring back 50 items per page. When I output the items I want to display a number to indicate what item in the total collection it is. The numbering should be reversed as the collection is displayed with most recent first. This might not relate to will_paginate but rather some other method of calculation. I will be using the same ordering in multiple types so it will need to be reusable. As an example, say I have 51 movies. The first item of the first page should display: Fight Club - Watched: 30th Dec 2010 Whilst the last item on the page should display: The Matrix - Watched: 3rd Jan 2010 The paged collection is available as an instance variable e.g. @movies, and @movies.count will display the number of items in the paged collection. So if we're on page 1, movies.count == 50, whilst on page 2 @movies.count == 1. Using Movie.count would give 51. If the page number and page size can be accessed the number could be calculated so how can they be returned? Though I'm hopeful there is something that already exists to handle this calculation!

  • Rails: bi-directional has_many :through relationship

    - by Chris
I have three models in a Rails application: Game represents an instance of a game being played. Player represents an instance of a participant in a game. User represents a registered person who can participate in games. Each Game can have many Players, and each User can have many Players (a single person can participate in multiple games at once); but each Player is in precisely one Game, and represents precisely one User. Hence, my relationships are as follows at present. class Game has_many :players end class User has_many :players end class Player belongs_to :game belongs_to :user end ... where naturally the players table has game_id and user_id columns, but games and users have no foreign keys. I would also like to represent the fact that each Game has many Users playing in it; and each User has many Games in which they are playing. How do I do this? Is it enough to add class Game has_many :users, :through => :players end class User has_many :games, :through => :players end

  • Saving a Record with Rails Association

    - by tshauck
Hi, I've been going through the Rails Guides, but have gotten stuck on associations after going through validations and migrations. So, I have the following models Job and Person, where a Person can have many jobs. I know that in reality there'd be a many-to-many, but I'm trying to get my handle on this first. class Job < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :people end and class Person < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :jobs end Here's the schema ActiveRecord::Schema.define(:version => 20110108185924) do create_table "jobs", :force => true do |t| t.string "occupation" t.boolean "like" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.integer "person_id" end create_table "people", :force => true do |t| t.string "first_name" t.string "last_name" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" end end Is there some I can do the following j = Job.first; j.Person? Then that'd give me access to the Person object associated with the j. I couldn't find it on guides.rubyonrails.org, although it has been very helpful getting a grip on migrations and validations thus far. Thanks PS, If there are any tutorials that covers more of this kind of things links would be great.

  • Rails toggling closest submit button in a form with radio buttons

    - by Timothy
    I have a bunch of forms listed in Rails like such <% parent.children.some_named_scope.each do |child| %> <% form_for :parent, parent do |f| %> <% current_value = child.column_to_set %> <% child.possible_values_for_column_to_set.each do |value| %> <% f.fields_for :children, child, :child_index => child.id.to_s do |child_form| %> <%= child_form.label :column_to_set, value.to_s.titleize, :value => value %> <%= child_form.radio_button, :column_to_set, value, :type => 'radio' %> <% end %> <% end %> <%= f.submit "Submit", :disabled => true %> <% end %> <% end %> How do I set the submit button's disabled to false, dynamically, when it is not current_value and set it to true when it is while the user clicks radio buttons?

  • Import Excel into Rails app

    - by Jack
Hi, I am creating a small rails app for personal use and would like to be able to upload excel files to later be validated and added to the database. I had this working previously with csv files, but this has since become impractical. Does anyone know of a tutorial for using the roo or spreadsheet gem to upload the file, display the contents to the user and then add to the database (after validating)? I know this is quite specific, but I want to work through this step by step. All I have so far is an 'import' view: <% form_for :dump, :url=>{:controller=>"students", :action=>"student_import"}, :html => { :multipart => true } do |f| -%> Select an Excel File : <%= f.file_field :excel_file -%> <%= submit_tag 'Submit' -%> <% end -%> But have no idea how to access this uploaded file in the controller. Any suggestions/help would be welcomed. Thanks

  • Rails from with better url

    - by Sam
wow, switching to rest is a different paradigm for sure and is mainly a headache right now. view <% form_tag (businesses_path, :method => "get") do %> <%= select_tag :business_category_id, options_for_select(@business_categories.collect {|bc| [bc.name, bc.id ]}.insert(0, ["All Containers", 0]), which_business_category(@business_category) ), { :onchange => "this.form.submit();"} %> <% end %> controller def index @business_categories = BusinessCategory.find(:all) if params[:business_category_id].to_i != 0 @business_category = BusinessCategory.find(params[:business_category_id]) @businesses = @business_category.businesses else @businesses = Business.all end respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @businesses } end end routes map.resources What I want to to is get a better url than what this form is presenting which is the following: http://localhost:3000/businesses?business_category_id=1 Without rest I would have do something like http://localhost:3000/business/view/bbq bbq as permalink or I would have done http://localhost:300/business_categories/view/bbq and get the business that are associated with the category but I don't really know the best way of doing this. So the two questions are what is the best logic of finding a business by its categories using the latter form and number two how to get that in a pretty url all through restful routes in rails.

  • implementing user tracking (logging) in Rails 3

    - by seth.vargo
Hi, I'm creating a Rails application in which logging individual user actions is vital. Every time a user clicks a url, I want to log the action along with all parameters. Here is my current implementation: class CreateActivityLogs < ActiveRecord::Migration create_table :activity_logs do |t| t.references :user t.string :ip_address t.string :referring_url t.string :current_url t.text :params t.text :action t.timestamps end end   class ActivityLog < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user end In a controller, I'd like to be able to do something like the following: ... ActivityLog::log @user.id, params, 'did foo with bar' ... I'd like to have the ActivityLog::log method automatically get the IP address, referring url, and current url (I know how to do this already) and create a new record in the table. So, my questions are: How do I do this? How do I use ActivityLog without having to create an instance everytime I want to log? Is this the best way? Some people have argued for a flat-file log for this kind of logging - however, I want admins to be able to see a user's activity in the backend as well, so I thought a database solution may be better?

  • problem using 'as_json' in my model and 'render :json' => in my controller (rails)

    - by patrick
Hi everyone. I am trying to create a unique json data structure, and I have run into a problem that I can't seem to figure out. In my controller, I am doing: favorite_ids = Favorites.all.map(&:photo_id) data = { :albums => PhotoAlbum.all.to_json, :photos => Photo.all.to_json(:favorite => lambda {|photo| favorite_ids.include?(photo.id)}) } render :json => data and in my model: def as_json(options = {}) { :name => self.name, :favorite => options[:favorite].is_a?(Proc) ? options[:favorite].call(self) : options[:favorite] } end The problem is, rails encodes the values of 'photos' & 'albums' (in my data hash) as JSON twice, and this breaks everything... The only way I could get this to work is if I call 'as_json' instead of 'to_json': data = { :albums => PhotoAlbum.all.as_json, :photos => Photo.all.as_json(:favorite => lambda {|photo| favorite_ids.include?(photo.id)}) } However, when I do this, my :favorite = lambda option no longer makes it into the model's as_json method.......... So, I either need a way to tell 'render :json' not to encode the values of the hash so I can use 'to_json' on the values myself, or I need a way to get the parameters passed into 'as_json' to actually show up there....... I hope someone here can help... Thanks!

  • Rails 3 upgrade will_pagination wrong number of arguments (2 for 1)

    - by user1452541
    I am in the process of upgrading my rails app from 2.3.5 to 3.2.5 on ruby 1.9.3. In the old app I was using the will_paginate plugin, which I have converted to a gem. Now after the upgrade I am getting the following error : wrong number of arguments (2 for 1) A few lines from application trace: Application Trace | Framework Trace | Full Trace will_paginate (3.0.3) lib/will_paginate/active_record.rb:124:in `paginate' app/models/activity.rb:28:in `dashboard_activities' app/controllers/dashboard_controller.rb:10:in `index' actionpack (3.2.5) lib/action_controller/metal/implicit_render.rb:4:in `send_action' actionpack (3.2.5) l I believe the issue is in the old code in the activity Model where I am using pagination. Can anyone help? The code: def dashboard_activities(page, total_records, date_range1 = nil, date_range2 = nil ) unless date_range2.nil? x =[ "is_delete = false AND status = 'open' AND date(due_date) between ? and ?", date_range1, date_range2] else x =[ "is_delete = false AND status = 'open' AND date(due_date) = ? ", date_range1] end paginate(:all, :page =>page, :per_page =>total_records, :conditions => x, :order =>"due_date asc") end

  • Create Rails model with argument of associated model?

    - by Kyle Carlson
I have two models, User and PushupReminder, and a method create_a_reminder in my PushupReminder controller (is that the best place to put it?) that I want to have create a new instance of a PushupReminder for a given user when I pass it a user ID. I have the association via the user_id column working correctly in my PushupReminder table and I've tested that I can both create reminders & send the reminder email correctly via the Rails console. Here is a snippet of the model code: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :pushup_reminders end class PushupReminder < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user end And the create_a_reminder method: def create_a_reminder(user) @user = User.find(user) @reminder = PushupReminder.create(:user_id => @user.id, :completed => false, :num_pushups => @user.pushups_per_reminder, :when_sent => Time.now) PushupReminderMailer.reminder_email(@user).deliver end I'm at a loss for how to run that create_a_reminder method in my code for a given user (eventually will be in a cron job for all my users). If someone could help me get my thinking on the right track, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

  • Why is my index view not working when I implement datepicker in my rails app

    - by user3736107
    Hi I am new to rails and would really appreciate some help, I am using the jQuery datepicker, the show view works however the index view doesn't, i get "undefined method `start_date' for nil:NilClass" in my index.html.erb file. Can you please let me know what is wrong with my index view and how i can fix it. The following are included in my app: meetups_controller.rb def show @meetup = Meetup.find(params[:id]) end def index @meetups = Meetup.where('user_id = ?', current_user.id).order('created_at DESC') end show.html.erb <h3>Title: <%= @meetup.title %></h3> <p>Start date: <%= @meetup.start_date.strftime("%B %e, %Y") %></p> <p>Start time: <%= @meetup.start_time.strftime("%l:%M %P") %></p> <p>End date: <%= @meetup.end_date.strftime("%B %e, %Y") %></p> <p>End time: <%= @meetup.end_time.strftime("%l:%M %P") %></p> index.html.erb <% if @meetups.any? %> <% @meetups.each do |meetup| %> <h3><%= link_to meetup.title, meetup_path(meetup) %></h3> <p>Start date: <%= meetup.start_date.strftime("%B %e, %Y") %></p> <p>Start time: <%= meetup.start_time.strftime("%l:%M %P") %></p> <p>End date: <%= @meetup.end_date.strftime("%B %e, %Y") %></p> <p>End time: <%= @meetup.end_time.strftime("%l:%M %P") %></p>

  • Rails form not creating object

    - by user2136807
I have created a simple form to create an instance of a modle and for some reason it is not calling the create method in the controller. Here is the form code: <% @house.mates.each do |mate| %> <p><%= mate.name %></p> <% end %> <h2>Add a new mate:</h2> <%= form_for @mate do |f| %> <p><%= f.label "Name" %> <%= f.text_field :name %> <%= f.hidden_field :house_id %> </p> <%= f.submit "Submit", :action => :create %> <% end %> Here is the controller code: class MatesController < ApplicationController def new @mate = Mate.new end def create @mate = Mate.new(params[:mate]) @mate.save redirect_to house_path(current_house) end end There is a many to one relationship between the Mate model and the House model... I am fairly new to rails but I have made other apps with similar forms, and I have never had this problem before. I can create and save Mate objects in the console, and I am not getting any errors, so it seem that somehow the controller method is not being called. Any help is much appreciated!

  • rails restful select_tag with :on_change

    - by Sam
So I'm finally starting to use rest in rails. I want to have a select_tag with product categories and when one of the categories is selected I want it to update the products on change. I did this before with <% form_for :category, :url => { :action => "show" } do |f| %> <%= select_tag :id, options_from_collection_for_select(Category.find(:all), :id, :name), { :onchange => "this.form.submit();"} %> <% end %> however now it doesn't work because it tries to do the show action. I have two controllers 1) products 2) product_categories products belongs_to product_categories with a has_many How should I do this. Since the products are listed on the products controller and index action should I use the products controller or should I use the product_categories controller to find the category such as in the show action and then render the product/index page. But the real problem I have is how to get this form or any other option to work with restful routes.

  • rake migration aborted: could not find table 'roles'

    - by user464180
I just inherited code that I'm attempting to run the migrations for but I keep getting a rake aborted error. I've come across others that have what appears to be similar issues, but most involved Heroku and I'm trying to run this locally (to start.) I've tried troubleshooting using both PostgreSQL and SQLite, and both produce the same issue. The table "roles" referenced is the second migration called, so I'm having a hard time figuring out what is causing it to not get built. Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Here's the roles migration: class CreateRoles < ActiveRecord::Migration def change create_table :roles do |t| t.string :name t.timestamps end end end Here is the trace for SQLite: ** Invoke db:migrate (first_time) ** Invoke environment (first_time) ** Execute environment rake aborted! • Rails preventing duplicates in polymorphic has_many :through associations

    - by seaneshbaugh
Is there an easy or at least elegant way to prevent duplicate entries in polymorphic has_many through associations? I've got two models, stories and links that can be tagged. I'm making a conscious decision to not use a plugin here. I want to actually understand everything that's going on and not be dependent on someone else's code that I don't fully grasp. To see what my question is getting at, if I run the following in the console (assuming the story and tag objects exist in the database already) s = Story.find_by_id(1) t = Tag.find_by_id(1) s.tags << t s.tags << t My taggings join table will have two entries added to it, each with the same exact data (tag_id = 1, taggable_id = 1, taggable_type = "Story"). That just doesn't seem very proper to me. So in an attempt to prevent this from happening I added the following to my Tagging model: before_validation :validate_uniqueness def validate_uniqueness taggings = Tagging.find(:all, :conditions => { :tag_id => self.tag_id, :taggable_id => self.taggable_id, :taggable_type => self.taggable_type }) if !taggings.empty? return false end return true end And it works almost as intended, but if I attempt to add a duplicate tag to a story or link I get an ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid: Validation failed exception. It seems that when you add an association to a list it calls the save! (rather than save sans !) method which raises exceptions if something goes wrong rather than just returning false. That isn't quite what I want to happen. I suppose I can surround any attempts to add new tags with a try/catch but that goes against the idea that you shouldn't expect your exceptions and this is something I fully expect to happen. Is there a better way of doing this that won't raise exceptions when all I want to do is just silently not save the object to the database because a duplicate exists?

  • Getting Started with Ruby & Ruby on Rails

    - by JakeTheSnake
Some background: I'm a jack-of-all traits, one of which is programming. I learned VB6 through Excel and PHP for creating websites and so far it's worked out just fine for me. I'm not CS major or even mathematically inclined - logic is what interests me. Current status: I'm willing to learn new and more powerful languages; my first foray into such a route is learning Ruby. I went to the main Ruby website and did the interactive intro. (by the way, I'm currently getting redirected to google.com when I try the link...it's happening to other websites as well...is my computer infected?) I liked what I learned and wanted to get started using Ruby to create websites. I downloaded InstantRails and installed it; everything so far has been fine - the program starts up just fine, and I can test some Ruby code in the console. However my troubles begin when I try and view a web page with Ruby code present. Lastly, my problem: As in PHP, I can browse to the .php file directly and through using PHP tags and some simple 'echo' statements I can be on my way in making dynamic web pages. However with the InstantRails app working, accessing a .rb or .rhtml page doesn't produce similar results. I made a simple text file named 'test.rb' and put basic HTML tags in there (html, head, body) and the Ruby tags <%= and % with some ruby code inside. The web page actually shows the tags and the code - as if it's all just plain HTML. I take it Ruby isn't parsing the page before it is displayed to the user, but this is where my lack of understanding of the Ruby environment stops me short. Where do I go from here?

  • Ruby on rails form variables as array items

I have a simple form with text input and text area, but when I submit it the variables seems to be array items instead of just string values? the form <%= form_tag(home_kontak_path, :remote => true) do %> <label>Jou epos adres</label> <%= text_field(:epos, "", :placeholder => "Jou epos adres", :id => "epos", :class => "input-block-level") %> <label>Boodskap hier</label> <%= text_area(:boodskap, "", :rows => "5", :placeholder => "Boodskap hier...", :id => "boodskap", :class => "input-block-level") %> <%= submit_tag "submit" %> <% end %> console output Started POST "/home/kontak" for 127.0.0.1 at 2012-11-23 11:53:03 +0200 Processing by HomeController#kontak as JS Parameters: {"utf8"=>"?", "authenticity_token"=>"i+5UWaQeBu7LYGPFBNAbum+67VzyyC82JN2wMlLc/UU=", "epos"=>["text box value"], "boodskap"=>["text area value"], "commit"=>""} what i would like it to be instead of "epos"=["text box value"] i want it to return "epos"="text box value"

  • Clearly defined Rails routing problem - undefined method for Nil:NilClass

    - by sscirrus
Guys and girls, I have been working on this problem for a while but still no joy. This is my second question within this general area, because the last question was getting too long and this is now more well-defined. Summary of the Problem: I am loading a page for my customers and I get error: undefined method 'name' for Nil:NilClass My Code #Link on views/users/show.html.erb: <%= link_to "Customer Account", :action => "home", :controller => "customers", :id => @user.user_type_id %> #Regular Route: map.connect 'customers/home/:id', :controller => 'customers', :action => 'home' #Rake Routes, first entry: /customers/home/:id :controller=>:"customers", :action=>"home" #Customers Controller: def home render :layout => 'home' @customer = Customer.find(params[:id]) @user = @current_user_session.user flash[:error] = "Customer not found" and return unless @customer @jobs = @customer.jobs end #views/customers/home.html.erb: <%= @customer.name %> I have absolutely no idea why this seemingly clear sequence of events is resulting in a NilClass. Search the console for Customer.find(2) returns the correct customer. What is this noob missing? Thank you very much.

  • Rails 3: Link_to :remote => true with JQuery?

    - by Derek
Question update: I have figured out that importing JQuery (even without using it at all) is causing :remote => true to not work properly. I get the following error in the Chrome console: Uncaught TypeError: Object [object Object] has no method 'dispatchEvent' (prototype.js:5653) And when the link is clicked, it throws the same error again before redirecting. Responder.erb.html <ul> <% @choices.each_with_index do |choice, index| %> <li><%= link_to choice, { :action => "submit_response", :id => @id, :response => index }, :remote => true %></li> <% end %> </ul> Example generated HTML: <ul> <li><a href="/poller/submit_response/yni?response=0" data-remote="true">True</a></li> <li><a href="/poller/submit_response/yni?response=1" data-remote="true">False</a></li> </ul>

  • Building a calendar navigation in Rails (controller and view links)

Trying to get the next month when clicking the link_to. I understand I am missing something from this Update I have found that the actual issue is that the `params[:next_month] is a string and I am trying to add a date to to it. Which means I need to convert the string to a date/time object. • How can I avoid permission denied errors when attempting to deploy a rails app with capistrano?

    - by joshee
Total noob here. I'm attempting to deploy an app through Capistrano. I'm getting relentless permission denied errors when I attempt to run cap deploy:update. Seemingly at least some of these errors are due to missing directories that trigger a "Permission Denied" error. (I'm doing setup on root just temporarily.) set :user, 'root' set :domain, 'domainname.com' set :application, 'appname' # adjust if you are using RVM, remove if you are not $:.unshift(File.expand_path('./lib', ENV['rvm_path'])) require "rvm/capistrano" set :rvm_ruby_string, '1.9.2' # file paths set :repository, "ssh://[email protected]/~/git/appname.git" set :deploy_to, "/var/rails/appname" # distribute your applications across servers (the instructions below put them # all on the same server, defined above as 'domain', adjust as necessary) role :app, domain role :web, domain role :db, domain, :primary => true set :deploy_via, :remote_cache set :scm, 'git' set :branch, 'master' set :scm_verbose, true set :use_sudo, false set :rails_env, :production namespace :deploy do desc "cause Passenger to initiate a restart" task :restart do run "touch #{current_path}/tmp/restart.txt" end desc "reload the database with seed data" task :seed do run "cd #{current_path}; rake db:seed RAILS_ENV=#{rails_env}" end end after "deploy:update_code", :bundle_install desc "install the necessary prerequisites" task :bundle_install, :roles => :app do run "cd #{release_path} && bundle install" end Here's my result: ** [domainname.com :: out] Cloning into '/var/rails/appname/shared/cached-copy'... ** [domainname.com :: err] Permission denied, please try again. ** [domainname.com :: err] Permission denied, please try again. ** [domainname.com :: err] Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-with-mic,password). ** [domainname.com :: err] fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly I'm able to ssh without a password, so not sure about that publickey error. • dublicate display of Posts from controller - conditions and joins problem - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I have built a blog application using Ruby on Rails. In the application I have posts and tags. Post has_many :tags and Tag belongs_to :post. In the /views/posts/index.html view I want to display two things. First is a listing of all posts displayed 'created_at DESC' and then in the side bar I am wanting to reference my Tags table, group records, and display as a link that allows for viewing all posts with that tag. With the code below, I am able to display the tag groups and succesfully display all posts with that tag. There are two problems with it thought. /posts view, the code seems to be referencing the Tag table and displaying the post multiple times, directly correlated to how many tags that post has. (i.e. if the post has 3 tags it will display the post 3 times). /posts view, only displays posts that have Tags. If the post doesn't have a tag, no display at all. /views/posts/index.html.erb <%= render :partial => @posts %> /views/posts/_post.html.erb <% div_for post do %> <h2><%= link_to_unless_current h(post.title), post %></h2> <i>Posted <%= time_ago_in_words(post.created_at) %></i> ago <%= simple_format h truncate(post.body, :length => 300) %> <%= link_to "Read More", post %> | <%= link_to "View & Add Comments (#{post.comments.count})", post %> <hr/> <% end %> /models/post.rb class Post < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :body, :title has_many :comments, :dependent => :destroy has_many :tags, :dependent => :destroy cattr_reader :per_page @@per_page = 10 end posts_controller.rb def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'updated_at DESC', :limit => 10) @posts=Post.all(:joins => :tags,:conditions=>(params[:tag_name] ? { :tags => { :tag_name => params[:tag_name] }} : {} ) ).paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 5 respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @posts } format.json { render :json => @posts } format.atom end end
