  Hi, I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and I want to install turnkey linux's LAMP server on my machine to test out my code. I installed Turnkey LAMP via VirtualBox and it seems to be working because I can access the http://localhost. My question is: How do I manipulate files via VirtualBox? For example, if I had installed LAMP on my machine (not on a virtual machine), I could easily add/edit/delete files in the var/WWW folder. Where is the equivalent of "WWW" folder on Virtualbox and how can I interface with it? Thanks,

  Hello, I have Windows 7, and installed virtualbox on it with a copy of Windows XP pro sp3 with all updates. I want to use the virutal environment to practice removing malware....in other words, I want to infect it on purpose. What is the safest way to do this so that win 7 doesn't get infected as well? Any settings I should change in virutalbox? And before anyone asks, no, I don't write viruses/malware. I am a tech, and would like to practice removing malware. Thanks.

• can't listen to tips on bill Jelen podcast disc

  Hi all, appreciate any suggestions you can offer. Am using windows 7-64 bit--have the bill Jelen disc with his podcasts on it. Can open the disc, select the podcast I want to listen to -it shows up on my screen but there seems to be no place to click to have the podcast acutally start running. Have used this disc before with xp and windows-not 64- and had no problem- would just click on the podcast and it would start to play. Would try on my other computer that it worked on but that computer is dead. Any ideas?? thanks

I was thinking of two options. 1) Install multiple Debian os on top of Xen (like VPS). Each may be 2GB Memory and run Drupal and Ruby and MYSQL on separate partitions . 2) Install one instance of Debian. and Install Drupal (Apache, php) Ruby (lighttpd, ruby) ,MySQL all in the same partition I was little worried that option 2 could lead to some performance issues later..

  I have a late 2008 MacBook and have recently installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp. Under OSX I can get about 4 hours of web browsing and general usage but under 7 that is slashed to about 2 hours. I know it's not a 'Windows being rubbish thing' but is there any settings I can change or updated drivers to improve this? (I'm already using Bootcamp 3.1).

• Cron Tips for not running cron jobs on holidays (the monday of a three day weekend)

  We have about a one hundred machine set-up with each machine running cron jobs like starting and stopping services and archiving these services' log files at the end of the day to a centralized repository. One headache we have is the three-day weekend (we're closed on holidays). We don't want the services starting up on those days and connecting to our business partner's machines. We currently do this by manually commenting out the most critical jobs and letting a bunch of errors happen all day. Not ideal. Basically if a job has '1-5' set in the day field we want this to mean 'work days' and not Monday to Friday'. We have a database that keeps track of which days are indeed 'work days' So, is it possible to override Cron's day-matching algorithm, or is there some other way to easily set a cron setting to avoid things starting up on a Monday holiday?   After struggling for four hours, I still cannot get Unity 3D of Gnome 3 to work on my VirtualBox - I have been pouring through Internet and forum posts but to no avail. Also this machine acts as wireless access point through an interface say, eth0 with ip address 192.168.1.1 and acts as gateway for the connected devices through this network with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Now is it possible to achieve the following: When any of the connected devices through wireless AP needs internet connection linux machine has to use ppp1 interface for internet. If any of the applications on the linux machine needs internet connection linux machine should use ppp0 interface for the internet. Can this be achieved by adding rules to chains in filter/nat tables? If the kernel routing table has a default rule to route the default traffic through interface ppp0, wil kernel completely ignore ppp1 for internet? PS: new to networking and routing concepts, If the question is not clear leave a comment, will try to give more information.

  I have AutoHotkey set up in a way that is recognises Cmd-Left and Cmd-Right keystrokes as back/forward navigation in Chrome. Problem is that it also recognises those keys being pressed while I am entering text in textboxes. However when entering text, I'd would like those key combinations to carry out different function - jump to beginning/end of the line, similar to Ctrl-Left/Right. Is there a way to have one mapping working for text boxes and another mapping for everything else in AutoHotkey?

  I'd like to create a mini dropbox and print server on a small soho network of 5 users (all of them use windows XP desktops). The device need to run 24/7 or at least 12/7 (I can accept just workday hours too but the other two options would be better). Dropbox mini server: I mean I will have a 90gb dropbox on every computer on my network LAN syncing with It and the one onto It syncing to the web. Print Server: I have a Samsung A4 small laser printer, a HP500 Designjet Plotter, a Samsung Multifunction Machine (fax/print/scan/copy), a modern HP color A3 Deskjet printer and a HP laserjet A4 color printer. All of them need to be connected to this mini server. Fax/Scan server: since I have the above mentioned fax/print/scan/copy machine I would like to make people use It from/to their computers through the mini server. I thought to a recent EEEBOX machine because I heard good things about ATOM cpus and because It seems that a recent BIOS version could switch It off and on autonomously. I'd like to listen some advice from You. Best of all would be: - If You have something similar running for a long time - If You disagree with this hardware choice and If You would suggest some other device. - If You see any issues with my printing setup - Anything else ;) My budget is from Zero (using right sw to build something on top on a old PC) to 500€ max.

  I'm just curious how many ways people can come up with to block access to a website. I simply intended to block (my own) access to news.ycombinator.com to stop my productivity drain. The first two methods I thought of were editing the hosts file to resolve news.ycombinator.com to 0.0.0.0 or adding a rule to iptables. iptables -A OUTPUT -d news.ycombinator.com -j REJECT Disclaimer: I do realise that the above two methods are easily by-passable. • Windows 7: Open File - Security Warning box appears for every app on the desktop

  Whenever I double-click to open an executable on the desktop (.exe, .bat, etc.), or a shortcut on the desktop that points to an executable, the "Security Warning" pops up and asks me "Are you really sure you want to open that? Stuff from the Internet is dangerous!" I don't usually mind this warning and don't want to disable it globally, but now I'm getting it for any executable on the desktop, even ones that I didn't download from the Web and don't have the Mark of the Web alternate data stream. (That is, streams -d * shouldn't and doesn't help.) This started fairly recently, but I can't really point to anything I did that triggered it. It only occurs in one user account on the machine; the other account doesn't have this problem. Running System Restore didn't help. How can I fix the problem and make the pop-up warning appear only when it's supposed to?

  I recently installed OpenSSH on one of my Ubuntu machines and I've been running into problems getting it to use RSA keys. I've generated the RSA key on the client (ssh-keygen), and appended the public key generated to both the /home/jex/.ssh/authorized_keys and /etc/ssh/authorized_keys files on the server.   I will teach Linux to people of the ages 20-75 with no prior Linux knowledge. I want to teach some basic concepts (what's an OS, what's a file system) and some practical knowlede: How to install it, network configuration, set up email client, installing software with a packet manager, etc. I have held a system administrators course in the past, but was under the impression that my method of teaching was not adequate. I've explained what I was about to show, showed students on the projector, told them to repeat it on their computers and summarized what they should have learned. They could ask questions all the time. But I fear they remembered only one-third of the knowledge I taught them. I have two questions here: Are there better methods to teach this particular subject in a classroom equipped with computers? Are there some tricks that "slow me down" when I teach stuff that I know inside-out?

  So here is my current objective: I need to create two guest instances of Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 in VirtualBox on a WindowsXP host. (This is needed for communications later on.) (this step is almost done) I need to establish networking between all three OS's, the host and two guests (Guest1 - Host - Guest2). I know that generally, to establish networking between Windows host and Ubuntu guest, we set up a bridge connection. But here there are two guests, and primarily I need networking between the two guests (Ubuntu to Ubuntu). So will there need to be a change in tap0 and tap1 interfaces when we set up a bridge, or is there a better way to implement this? Please explain the procedure.

  Hi, I have a problem trying to open my computer's mouse settings by either going to the command prompt and typing, 'control mouse', 'main.cpl' (as researched online) or simply by trying to go to the Control Panel and clicking on 'Mouse' under Hardware and Sound section. I have also tried running cmd as Administrator and trying the above commands but that is of no help. Lastly, if I search for 'mouse' and click 'Mouse' from the Windows search bar, that doesn't work either. In the past I had bought and installed Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000 software and have just now bought and installed HP's Wireless Comfort Mobile mouse. Any help in this regard is highly recommended. I won't be able to restore or reinstall my laptop since it's a heavy use machine. Thanks! Yasser

• Can't make updates with LDAP from Linux box to Windows AD

  I have a webapp (built using Zend Framework - PHP) that runs on a Linux environment which needs to authenticate against Active Directory on a Windows server. So far my webapp can authenticate with LDAPS, but cannot perform any kind of write operation (add/update/delete). It can only read. I have configured my server as follows: I have exported the CA Certificate from my Windows AD server to /etc/opendldap/certs I have created a pem file based on this certificate using openssl I have update /etc/openldap/ldap.conf so that it knows where to look for the pem certificate: TLS_CACERT /etc/openldap/certs/xyz.internal.pem When I run my script, I get the following error: 0x35 (Server is unwilling to perform; 0000209A: SvcErr: DSID-031A1021, problem 5003 (WILL_NOT_PERFORM), data 0 ): Have I missed something with my configuration, which is causing the server to reject making updates to AD?
