• Using reshape + cast to aggregate over multiple columns

  In R, I have a data frame with columns for Seat (factor), Party (factor) and Votes (numeric). I want to create a summary data frame with columns for Seat, Winning party, and Vote share. For example, from the data frame df <- data.frame(party=rep(c('Lab','C','LD'),times=4), votes=c(1,12,2,11,3,10,4,9,5,8,6,15), seat=rep(c('A','B','C','D'),each=3)) I want to get the output seat winner voteshare 1 A C 0.8000000 2 B Lab 0.4583333 3 C C 0.5000000 4 D LD 0.5172414 I can figure out how to achieve this. But I'm sure there must be a better way, probably a cunning one-liner using Hadley Wickham's reshape package. Any suggestions? For what it's worth, my solution uses a function from my package djwutils_2.10.zip and is invoked as follows. But there are all sorts of special cases it doesn't deal with, so I'd rather rely on someone else's code. aggregateList(df, by=list(seat=seat), FUN=list(winner=function(x) x$party[which.max(x$votes)], voteshare=function(x) max(x$votes)/sum(x$votes)))

• Best place to store large amounts of session data

  I'm building an application that needs to store and re-use large amounts of data per session. So for example, the user selects a large list of list items (say 2000 or significantly more) which have a numeric value as their key then they save that selection and go off to another page, do something else and then come back to the original page and need to load their selections into that page. What is the quickest and most efficient way of storing and reusing that data? In a text file saved with the session id? In a temp db table? In the session data itself (db sessions so size isn't a limit) using a serialised string or using gzcompress or gzencode? Any advice or insight would be great! Thank you!!!!

  I am developing a Java Desktop Application and designing the GUI with the help of Netbeans Swing GUI builder. I want to use a JSpinner in my app. I have dragged and dropped it to a JPanel. Now, I want to set its two properties: First, It should display numbers in the range of 1 to 50. Neither less than 1 nor greater than 50. How can I set that range? Second, when I try to get the value of it by spinner.getValue() it returns an Object. As my spinner's data type is Integer, would it be better to downcast the Object into Integer or Is there any other way to get that numeric value?

• AIR SQLite IN expression not working

  Hi, I'm having a problem with an expression in my sql statement in SQLite for Adobe AIR basically I have this sql = "UPDATE uniforms SET status=@status WHERE customerId IN(19,20)"; updateStmt.parameters["@status"] = args[1]; updateStmt.execute(); if I run the above code it works, updating the status when the id are 19 and 20 but if I pass the ids list as a parameter like this sql = "UPDATE uniforms SET status=@status WHERE customerId IN(@ids)"; updateStmt.parameters["@status"] = args[1]; updateStmt.parameters["@ids"] = "19,20"; updateStmt.execute(); it gives me and error, saying could not convert text value to numeric value, which make sense because I'm passing and string but the IN expression should convert it accordingly, like it does when I pass directly the list values, why is not working the other way, thanks for any help!

  I am using the d3.behavior.zoom to implement panning and zooming on a tree layout, but it is exhibiting a behavior I would describe as bouncing or numeric instability. When you start to drag, the display will inexplicably bounce left or right until it just disappears.   I want to break a string according to the following rules: all consecutive alpha-numeric chars, plus the dot (.) must be treated as one part all other consecutive chars must be treated as one part consecutive combinations of 1 and 2 must be treated as different parts no whitespace must be returned For example this string: Method(hierarchy.of.properties) = ? Should return this array: Array ( [0] => Method [1] => ( [2] => hierarchy.of.properties [3] => ) [4] => = [5] => ? ) I was unsuccessful with preg_split(), as AFAIK it cannot treat the pattern as an element to be returned. Any idea for a simple way to do this?

  I need to create a MySQL query that generates 4 rows for each row in the table it references. I need some of the information in those rows to repeat and some to be different. In the table each row stands for one day. I need to break the day up in 6 hour increments, hence the four rows for each entry. I need to create one column which for each day will have '12AM', '6AM', '12PM', and '6PM' values and another column will have the corresponding numeric values calculated for those entries. Thanks a lot in advance and I will really appreciate any help on this.

• Is there a work-around that allows missing data to equal NULL for LOAD DATA INFILE in MySQL?

  I have a lot of large csv files with NULL values stored as ,, (i.e., no entry). After a lot of searching I found that this is a known "bug", although it may be a feature for some users. Is there a way that I can fix this on the fly without pre-processing? These data are all numeric, so a zero value is very different from NULL. Or if I have to do pre-processing, is there one that is most promising for dealing with tens of csv files of 100mb to 1gb? Thanks!

• Looking for ideas on automatically arranging a set of objects (furniture) in a virtual room in AS3

  First of all, I don't want to visually arrange 3D models dragging them with the mouse, all I want is: Given a room of certain dimensions (L,W,H) and given a set of elements like beds, chairs, etc (with L,W,H dimensions, of course) I want to automatically arrange those elements to take advantage of the space as much as I can. So I want to be able to put as much furniture as I can in a given room. At the end I need to represent the arranged items visually, inside the room. My first thought was to use an array of items and sorting it with array.sortOn(["l","w","h"] Array.NUMERIC) and then define a gap between the objects and make the maths to put the objects one next to another, etc. but that isn't a good approach because some items may be placed on top of another ones (boxes of the same size, boxes on top of tables, etc). I really don't have experience on 3D programming, that's why I'm asking for help. Thanks in advance.

  I have a table with separate columns for months, days and a varchar column for 6 hour increments for each day ('12AM', '6AM', '12PM', '6PM'). There's also a column that's supposed to have calculated numeric values for each of those 6 hour increments. These calculated values come from some reference table. This reference table contains values for each day for several months broken down by hour where each hour has its own column. So, basically, I have to add the values for each 6 hour increment. I have no idea how to associate the correct values in the reference table to those 6 hour increments. I will really appreciate any help on this.

  If i takes larger datatype where i know i should have taken datatype that was sufficient for possible values that i will insert into a table will affect any performance in sql server in terms of speed or any other way. eg. IsActive (0,1,2,3) not more than 3 in any case. I know i must take tinyint but due to some reasons consider it as compulsion, i am taking every numeric field as bigint and every character field as nVarchar(Max) Please give statistics if possible, to let me try to overcoming that compulsion. I need some solid analysis that can really make someone rethink before taking any datatype.

• C++, WCHAR[] to std::cout and comparision

  Hi, I need to put WCHAR[] to std::cout ... It is a part of PWLAN_CONNECTION_NOTIFICATION_DATA passed from Native Wifi API callback. I tried simply std::cout << var; but it prints out the numeric address of first char. the comparision (var == L"some text") doesn't work either. The debugger returns the expected value, however the comparision returns 0. How can I convert this array to a standard string(std::string)? Thanks in advance

I would like to allow the user to change the font size based on preference (ie did they remember their glasses today). A few ways that I can think of would be a numeric-up-down or +/- button controls. Both of these ways require screen real estate that is very limited. Is there a control or technique that would allow font size changes with a hidden-when-not-used control?

• Why do Java and C# not have implicit conversions to boolean?

  Since I started Java it's been very aggravating for me that it doesn't support implicit conversions from numeric types to booleans, so you can't do things like: if (flags & 0x80) { ... } instead you have to go through this lunacy: if ((flags & 0x80) != 0) { ... } It's the same with null and objects. Every other C-like language I know including JavaScript allows it, so I thought Java was just moronic, but I've just discovered that C# is the same (at least for numbers, don't know about null/objects): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/c8f5xwh7(VS.71).aspx Microsoft changed it on purpose from C++, so why? Clearly I'm missing something. Why change (what I thought was) the most natural thing in the world to make it longer to type? What on Earth is wrong with it?

  Hi, I am working on a C++ application that uses computer vision techniques to identify various types of objects in a sequence of images. The (1000+) images have been hand-classified, so we have an XML file for each image containing a description of where the objects are actually located in the images. I would like to know if there is a testing framework that can understand/graph results from tests that are numeric, in this case some measure of the error in the program's classification of the images, rather than just pass/fail style unit tests. We would like to use something like CDash/CTest for running these automated tests, and viewing over time how improvements to the vision algorithms are causing the images to be more correctly classified. Does anyone know of a tool/framework that can do this?

  Is there a way to duplicate a db record with linq to sql in c#? Id [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, [Foo] [nvarchar](255) NOT NULL, [Bar] [numeric](28,12) NOT NULL, ... Given the table above, I would like to duplicate a record (but give it a different id), in a way that new fields added to the DB and the Linq dbml file at a later date will still get duplicated with out having to change that code that duplicates the record. ie I don't want to write newRecord.Foo = currentRecord.Foo; for all of the fields on the table.

  What if one wants to apply a functon i.e. to each row of a matrix, but also wants to use as an argument for this function the number of that row. As an example, suppose you wanted to get the n-th root of the numbers in each row of a matrix, where n is the row number. Is there another way (using apply only) than column-binding the row numbers to the initial matrix, like this? test <- data.frame(x=c(26,21,20),y=c(34,29,28)) t(apply(cbind(as.numeric(rownames(test)),test),1,function(x) x[2:3]^(1/x[1]))) P.S.   I'm writing a little homebrew ORM (academic interest). I'm trying to adhere to the TDD concept as a training exercise, and as part of that exercise I'm writing documentation for the API as I develop the class. Case in point - I'm working on a classic "getCollection" type mapper class. I want it to be able to retrieve collections of asset X (let's say blog posts) for a specific user, and also collections based on an arbitrary array of numeric values. So - you might have a method like any one of these $User = $UserMapper->load(1); $ArticleCollection = $ArticleMapper->getCollection(range(10,20)); $ArticleCollection = $ArticleMapper->getCollection($User); $ArticleCollection = $ArticleMapper->getCollection($User->getId()); So, in writing the documentation for the getCollection method - I want to declare the @param variable in the Docblock. Is it better to have a unique method for each argument type, or is it acceptable to have a method that delegates to the correct internal method/class based on argument type?

Floating point data is approximate; therefore, not all values in the data type range can be represented exactly. Which is what I expected it to say. • Alternatives to sign() in sqlite for custom order by

  I have a string column which contains some numeric fields, but a lot are 0, empty string or null. The rest are numbers having different range, all positive. I tried to create a custom order by. The order would be done by two fields. First I would like to order the fields that have this number 0 and then sort by name. So something this would work: select * from table order by sign(referenceid) desc, name asc; But Sqlite lacks the sign() -1/0/1 function, and I am on Android and I can't create user defined functions. What other options I have to get this sort done.

• qt custom widgets propertis are not getting updated properly in Qt designer

The widget gets loaded fine,the properties appear in QT Designer, Only problem is every time I change the property of Alpha key,the numeric also gets set, Though the accessor functions are different,and the enums are differnet and values are different. Also whenever i check the Form-view code,the values would have got modified. • Swing: Multiple CellEditors for a column

  Hi, In my JTable, I have two editable numeric columns. The editor for both columns extends AbstractCellEditor and uses a JFormattedTextField as an the editing component. The problem is that the format for input depends on the value of another column in the row. If condition X is met, the number of fraction digits should be Y, otherwise they should be Y+2. I attempted to override the getTableCellEditor(..) method to associate a TableCellEditor per row. See this example. However, since I have two editable columns, sharing a single TableCellEditor object per row gives some very odd results. I don't think this is an appropriate solution. Any ideas on how to approach this would be much appreciated! Thank you!
