  • Convert C++Builder AnsiString to std::string via boost::lexical_cast

    - by David Klein
    For a school assignment I have to implement a project in C++ using Borland C++ Builder. As the VCL uses AnsiString for all GUI Components I have to convert all of my std::strings to AnsiString for the sake of displaying. std::string inp = "Hello world!"; AnsiString outp(inp.c_str()); works of course but is a bit tedious to write and code duplication I want to avoid. As we use Boost in other contexts I decided to provide some helper functions go get boost::lexical_cast to work with AnsiString. Here is my implementation so far: std::istream& operator>>(std::istream& istr, AnsiString& str) { istr.exceptions(std::ios::badbit | std::ios::failbit | std::ios::eofbit); std::string s; std::getline(istr,s); str = AnsiString(s.c_str()); return istr; } In the beginning I got Access Violation after Access Violation but since I added the .exceptions() stuff the picture gets clearer. When the conversion is performed I get the following Exception: ios_base::eofbit set [Runtime Error/std::ios_base::failure] Does anyone have an idea how to fix it and can explain why the error occurs? My C++ experience is very limited. The conversion routine the other way round would be: std::ostream& operator<<(std::ostream& ostr,const AnsiString& str) { ostr << (str.c_str()); return ostr; } Maybe someone will spot an error here too :) With best regards! Edit: At the moment I'm using the edited version of Jem, it works in the beginning. After a while of using the programm the Borland Codeguard mentions some pointer arithmetic in already freed regions. Any ideas how this could be related? The Codeguard log (I'm using the german version, translations marked with stars): ------------------------------------------ Fehler 00080. 0x104230 (r) (Thread 0x07A4): Zeigerarithmetik in freigegebenem Speicher: 0x0241A238-0x0241A258. **(pointer arithmetic in freed region)** | d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\sstream Zeile 126: | { // not first growth, adjust pointers | _Seekhigh = _Seekhigh - _Mysb::eback() + _Ptr; |> _Mysb::setp(_Mysb::pbase() - _Mysb::eback() + _Ptr, | _Mysb::pptr() - _Mysb::eback() + _Ptr, _Ptr + _Newsize); | if (_Mystate & _Noread) Aufrufhierarchie: **(stack-trace)** 0x00411731(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:010731) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\sstream#126 0x00411183(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:010183) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\streambuf#465 0x0040933D(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:00833D) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\streambuf#151 0x00405988(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:004988) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\ostream#679 0x00405759(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:004759) D:\Projekte\Schule\foschamp\src\Server\Ansistringkonverter.h#31 0x004080C9(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:0070C9) D:\Projekte\Schule\foschamp\lib\boost_1_34_1\boost/lexical_cast.hpp#151 Objekt (0x0241A238) [Größe: 32 Byte] war erstellt mit new **(Object was created with new)** | d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\xmemory Zeile 28: | _Ty _FARQ *_Allocate(_SIZT _Count, _Ty _FARQ *) | { // allocate storage for _Count elements of type _Ty |> return ((_Ty _FARQ *)::operator new(_Count * sizeof (_Ty))); | } | Aufrufhierarchie: **(stack-trace)** 0x0040ED90(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:00DD90) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\xmemory#28 0x0040E194(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:00D194) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\xmemory#143 0x004115CF(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:0105CF) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\sstream#105 0x00411183(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:010183) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\streambuf#465 0x0040933D(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:00833D) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\streambuf#151 0x00405988(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:004988) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\ostream#679 Objekt (0x0241A238) war Gelöscht mit delete **(Object was deleted with delete)** | d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\xmemory Zeile 138: | void deallocate(pointer _Ptr, size_type) | { // deallocate object at _Ptr, ignore size |> ::operator delete(_Ptr); | } | Aufrufhierarchie: **(stack-trace)** 0x004044C6(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:0034C6) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\xmemory#138 0x00411628(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:010628) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\sstream#111 0x00411183(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:010183) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\streambuf#465 0x0040933D(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:00833D) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\streambuf#151 0x00405988(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:004988) d:\program files\borland\bds\4.0\include\dinkumware\ostream#679 0x00405759(=FOSChampion.exe:0x01:004759) D:\Projekte\Schule\foschamp\src\Server\Ansistringkonverter.h#31 ------------------------------------------ Ansistringkonverter.h is the file with the posted operators and line 31 is: std::ostream& operator<<(std::ostream& ostr,const AnsiString& str) { ostr << (str.c_str()); **(31)** return ostr; } Thanks for your help :)

  • Link error after update from VS2008 to VS2010

    - by Caihua
    Hi all, Today I met an link problem after updating the VS version from 2008 to 2010, the error is something like this: error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "public: static void __cdecl std::_String_base::_Xran(void)" (?_Xran@_String_base@std@@SAXXZ) referenced in function "public: class std::basic_string,class std::allocator & __thiscall std::basic_string,class std::allocator ::assign(class std::basic_string,class std::allocator const &,unsigned int,unsigned int)" (?assign@?$basic_string@DU?$char_traits@D@std@@V?$allocator@D@2@@std@@QAEAAV12@ABV12@II@Z) error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "public: static void __cdecl std::_String_base::_Xlen(void)" (?_Xlen@_String_base@std@@SAXXZ) referenced in function "protected: bool __thiscall std::basic_string,class std::allocator ::_Grow(unsigned int,bool)" (?_Grow@?$basic_string@DU?$char_traits@D@std@@V?$allocator@D@2@@std@@IAE_NI_N@Z) I have googled this issue on the web, and found a similar post in this address : http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vcgeneral/thread/5ac28a31-3339-4db1-90f4-68edad360309 But none of these answers can solve my problem. Could anyone give me some tips on how to solve this issue? Thanks a lot for the help!

  • Program received signal from GDB: EXC_BAD_ACCESS

    - by user577185
    Well, I'm starting development on the Mac OS X this code that you'll see is in a book that I bought, really basic like Chapter 3. And I can't run it. PLEASE HELP ME: C301.m : #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> int main (int argc, const char * argv[]) { if (argc == 1) { NSLog (@"You need to provide a file name"); return -1; } FILE *wordFile = fopen("tmp/words.txt", "r"); char word[100]; while (fgets(word, 100, wordFile)) { word[strlen(word) - 1] = '\0'; NSLog(@"%s is %d characters long", word, strlen(word)); } fclose(wordFile); return 0; } //main The file is in its place. Thank you so much!

  • Tinyxml Multi Task

    - by shaimagz
    I have a single xml file and every new thread of the program (BHO) is using the same Tinyxml file. every time a new window is open in the program, it runs this code: const char * xmlFileName = "C:\\browsarityXml.xml"; TiXmlDocument doc(xmlFileName); doc.LoadFile(); //some new lines in the xml.. and than save: doc.SaveFile(xmlFileName); The problem is that after the first window is adding new data to the xml and saves it, the next window can't add to it. although the next one can read the data in the xml, it can't write to it. I thought about two possibilities to make it work, but I don't know how to implement them: Destroy the doc object when I'm done with it. Some function in Tinyxml library to unload the file. Any help or better understanding of the problem will be great. Thanks.

    So I am getting the error: "undefined reference to sem_open()" even though I have include the semaphore.h header. The same thing is happening for all my pthread function calls (mutex, pthread_create, etc). Any thoughts? I am using the following command to compile: g++ '/home/robin/Desktop/main.cpp' -o '/home/robin/Desktop/main.out' #include <iostream> using namespace std; #include <pthread.h> #include <semaphore.h> #include <fcntl.h> const char *serverControl = "/serverControl"; sem_t* semID; int main ( int argc, char *argv[] ) { //create semaphore used to control servers semID = sem_open(serverControl,O_CREAT,O_RDWR,0); return 0; }

  • Useful Eclipse Java Code Templates

    You can create various Java code templates in Eclipse via the Window->Preferences->Java -> Editor -> Templates e.g. sysout is expanded to: System.out.println(${word_selection}${});${cursor} You can activate this by typing sysout followed by CTRL+SPACE What useful Java code templates do you currently use? Include the name and description of it and why it's awesome. There's an open bounty on this for an original/novel use of a template rather than a built-in existing feature. • Compile error C++: could not deduce template argument for 'T'

    - by OneShot
    I'm trying to read binary data to load structs back into memory so I can edit them and save them back to the .dat file. readVector() attempts to read the file, and return the vectors that were serialized. But i'm getting this compile error when I try and run it. • Make compiler copy characters using movsd

    - by Suma
    I would like to copy a relatively short sequence of memory (less than 1 KB, typically 2-200 bytes) in a time critical function. The best code for this on CPU side seems to be rep movsd. However I somehow cannot make my compiler to generate this code. I hoped (and I vaguely remember seeing so) using memcpy would do this using compiler built-in instrinsic, but based on disassembly and debugging it seems compiler is using call to memcpy/memmove library implementation instead. I also hoped the compiler might be smart enough to recognize following loop and use rep movsd on its own, but it seems it does not. char *dst; const char *src; // ... for (int r=size; --r>=0; ) *dst++ = *src++; Is there some way to make the Visual Studio compiler to generate rep movsd sequence other than using inline assembly?

  • How can I get this code involving unique_ptr to compile?!

    - by Neil G
    #include <vector> #include <memory> using namespace std; class A { public: A(): i(new int) {} A(A const& a) = delete; A(A &&a): i(move(a.i)) {} unique_ptr<int> i; }; class AGroup { public: void AddA(A &&a) { a_.emplace_back(move(a)); } vector<A> a_; }; int main() { AGroup ag; ag.AddA(A()); return 0; } does not compile... (says that unique_ptr's copy constructor is deleted) I tried replacing move with forward. Not sure if I did it right, but it didn't work for me.

  • Compile time string hashing

    - by Caspin
    I have read in few different places that using c++0x's new string literals it might be possible to compute a string's hash at compile time. However, no one seems to be ready to come out and say that it will be possible or how it would be done. Is this possible? What would the operator look like? I'm particularly interested use cases like this. void foo( const std::string& value ) { switch( std::hash(value) ) { case "one"_hash: one(); break; case "two"_hash: two(); break; /*many more cases*/ default: other(); break; } } Note: the compile time hash function doesn't have to look exactly as I've written it. I did my best to guess what the final solution would look like, but meta_hash<"string"_meta>::value could also be a viable solution.

  • flex and bison: wrong output

But my program cannot give a correct output. .lex file: %option noyywrap %{ #include<stdio.h> #include<stdlib.h> #include "complex_cal.h" #define YYSTYPE complex #include "complex_cal.tab.h" void RmWs(char* str); %} /* Add your Flex definitions here */ /* Some definitions are already provided to you*/ ws [ \t]+ digits [0-9] number (0|[1-9]+{digits}*)\.?{digits}* im [i] complexnum {ws}*[-]*{ws}*{number}{ws}*[+|-]{ws}*{number}{ws}*{im}{ws}* op [-+*/()] %% {complexnum} {RmWs(yytext); sscanf(yytext,"%lf %lf",&(yylval.real),&(yylval.img)); return CNUMBER;} {ws} /**/ {op} return *yytext; %% /* function provided to student to remove */ /* all the whitespaces from a string. */ void RmWs(char* str){ int i=0,j=0; char temp[strlen(str)+1]; strcpy(temp,str); while (temp[i]!='\0'){ while (temp[i]==' '){i++;} str[j]=temp[i]; i++; j++; } str[j]='\0'; } .y file: %{ #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include "complex_cal.h" /* prototypes of the provided functions */ complex complex_add (complex, complex); complex complex_sub (complex, complex); complex complex_mul (complex, complex); complex complex_div (complex, complex); /* prototypes of the provided functions */ int yylex(void); int yyerror(const char*); %} %token CNUMBER %left '+' '-' %left '*' '/' %nonassoc '(' ')' %% /* start: Add your grammar rules and actions here */ complexexp: complexexp '+' complexexpmultidiv {$$=complex_add($1, $3);} | complexexp '-' complexexpmultidiv {$$=complex_sub($1, $3);} | complexexpmultidiv {$$.real=$1.real;$$.img=$1.img;} ; complexexpmultidiv: complexexpmultidiv '*' complexsimple {$$=complex_mul($1, $3);} | complexexpmultidiv '/' complexsimple {$$=complex_div($1, $3);} | complexsimple {$$.real=$1.real;$$.img=$1.img;} ; complexsimple: '(' complexexp ')' {$$.real=$2.real;$$.img=$2.img;} | '(' CNUMBER ')' {$$.real=$2.real;$$.img=$2.img;} ; /* end: Add your grammar rules and actions here */ %% int main(){ return yyparse(); } int yyerror(const char* s){ printf("%s\n", s); return 0; } /* function provided to do complex addition */ /* input : complex numbers c1, c2 */ /* output: nothing */ /* side effect : none */ /* return value: result of addition in c3 */ complex complex_add (complex c1, complex c2){ /* c1 + c2 */ complex c3; c3.real = c1.real + c2.real; c3.img = c1.img + c2.img; return c3; } /* function provided to do complex subtraction */ /* input : complex numbers c1, c2 */ /* output: nothing */ /* side effect : none */ /* return value: result of subtraction in c3 */ complex complex_sub (complex c1, complex c2){ /* c1 - c2 */ complex c3; c3.real = c1.real - c2.real; c3.img = c1.img - c2.img; return c3; } /* function provided to do complex multiplication */ /* input : complex numbers c1, c2 */ /* output: nothing */ /* side effect : none */ /* return value: result of multiplication in c3 */ complex complex_mul (complex c1, complex c2){ /* c1 * c2 */ complex c3; c3.real = c1.real*c2.real - c1.img*c2.img; c3.img = c1.img*c2.real + c1.real*c2.img; return c3; } /* function provided to do complex division */ /* input : complex numbers c1, c2 */ /* output: nothing */ /* side effect : none */ /* return value: result of c1/c2 in c3 */ complex complex_div (complex c1, complex c2){ /* c1 / c2 (i.e. c1 divided by c2 ) */ complex c3; double d; /*divisor calculation using the conjugate of c2*/ d = c2.real*c2.real + c2.img*c2.img; c3.real = (c1.real*c2.real + c1.img*c2.img)/d; c3.img = (c1.img*c2.real - c1.real*c2.img)/d; return c3; } .h file: #include <string.h> /* struct for holding a complex number */ typedef struct { double real; double img; } complex; /* define the return type of FLEX */ #define YYSTYPE complex Script for compiling the file: bison -d -v complex_cal.y flex -ocomplex_cal.lex.yy.c complex_cal.lex gcc -o complex_cal complex_cal.lex.yy.c complex_cal.tab.c ./complex_cal Some correct sample run of the program: input:(5+6i)*(6+1i) output:24.000000+41.000000i input:(7+8i)/(-3-4i)*(5+7i) output:-11.720000-14.040000i input:(7+8i)/((-3-4i)*(5+7i)) output:-0.128108+0.211351i But when I run this program, the program only give an output which is identical to my input. For example, when I input (5+6i)(6+1i), it just gives (5+6i)(6+1i). Even if I input any other things, for example, input "abc" it just gives "abc" and is not syntax error. I don't know where the problem is and I hope to know how to solve it.

  • Smart pointers and polymorphism

    - by qwerty
    hello. I implemented reference counting pointers (called SP in the example) and im having problems with polymorphism which i think i shouldn't have. In the following code: SP<BaseClass> foo() { // Some logic... SP<DerivedClass> retPtr = new DerivedClass(); return retPtr; } DerivedClass inherits from BaseClass. With normal pointers this should have worked, but with the smart pointers it says "cannot convert from 'SP<T>' to 'const SP<T>&" and i think it refers to the copy constructor of the smart pointer. How to i allow this kind of polymorphism with reference counting pointer? I'd appreciate code samples cause obviously im doing something wrong here if im having this problem. Thanks! :) [p.s., plz don't tell me to use standart liberary with smart pointers cuz that's impossible at this moment.]

  • LB_SETTABSTOPS does not appear to affect a CheckedListBox

    - by BP
    I am trying to set tab stops in a CheckedListBox in my WinForms application, but no matter what I do, it does not seem to have any effect. I have the following in the code for my form: <DllImport("user32.dll")> _ Public Sub SendMessage(ByVal hWnd As IntPtr, ByVal uMsg As Int32, ByVal wParam As Int32, ByRef lParam As Int32) End Sub Public Const LB_SETTABSTOPS As Int32 = &H192 And in the form's load method, I am doing the following, where theList is my CheckedListBox: Dim tabStops() As Integer = {40, 140, 240} Call SendMessage(theList.Handle, LB_SETTABSTOPS, tabStops.Length, tabStops(0)) theList.Refresh() And then later on, I use this in a loop, where col1 through col4 are all string values for the columns: theList.Items.Add(col1 & vbTab & col2 & vbTab & col3 & vbTab & col4) But no matter what I use for the values of tabStops, the list is formatted with standard width tab stops.

  • ping to web server from iphone

    - by Sreelal
    Hi , I am developing an aplication which needs to download some data from webserver.So i need to first ping to the web server to check whether the service is available after checking the internet connectivity .I used the following code to check server availability ` BOOL success = NO; const char *host_name = [@"http://192.168.1.7:8080/TestWeb/webresources/" cStringUsingEncoding:NSASCIIStringEncoding]; SCNetworkReachabilityRef reachability = SCNetworkReachabilityCreateWithName(NULL, host_name); SCNetworkReachabilityFlags flags; success = SCNetworkReachabilityGetFlags(reachability, &flags); BOOL isAvailable = success && (flags & kSCNetworkFlagsReachable) && !(flags & kSCNetworkFlagsConnectionRequired); return isAvailable; ` where my server is uploaded locally.But this code always return an invalid result,but it works correctly if i gave some exixting sites like google.com.Please let me know whats i am doing wrong..

  • How to return the output of a recursive function in Clojure

    - by Silanglaya Valerio
    Hi everyone! I'm new to functional languages and clojure, so please bear with me... I'm trying to construct a list of functions, with either random parameters or constants. The function that constructs the list of functions is already working, though it doesn't return the function itself. I verified this using println. Here is the snippet: (def operations (list #(- %1 %2) #(+ %1 %2) #(* %1 %2) #(/ %1 %2))) (def parameters (list \u \v \w \x \y \z)) (def parameterlistcount 6) (def paramcount 2) (def opcount 4) (defn generateFunction "Generates a random function list" ([] (generateFunction 2 4 0.5 0.6 '())) ([pc maxdepth fp pp function] (if (and (> maxdepth 0) (< (rand) fp)) (dotimes [i 2] (println(conj (generateFunction pc (dec maxdepth) fp pp function) {:op (nth operations (rand-int opcount))}))) (if (and (< (rand) pp) (> pc 0)) (do (dec pc) (conj function {:param (nth parameters (rand-int parameterlistcount))})) (conj function {:const (rand-int 100)}))))) Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

  • qtableview (libqt) how do I correctly create a QModelIndex

    - by Chris Camacho
    I'm trying to enter edit mode on a specific cell like this void MainWindow::on_addButton_released(void) { tm->addRow(); tableView->scrollToBottom(); int ec=tm->firstWritableColumn(); int r=tm->rowCount(QModelIndex()); QModelIndex id = tm->index(r, ec, QModelIndex()); tableView->setCurrentIndex(id); tableView->edit(id); qDebug() << "row:" << r << " col:" << ec << "index:" << id; } my model creates an index like this QModelIndex TableModel::index(int row,int column,QModelIndex parent) const { Q_UNUSED(parent); return createIndex(row,column,0); } the debug output looks like this row: 9 col: 1 index: QModelIndex(9,1,0x0,TableModel(0xbf3f50) ) I'm fairly sure that the index is somehow invalid as setCurrentIndex doesn't seem to be working

  • How fast can you make linear search?

    - by Mark Probst
    I'm looking to optimize this linear search: static int linear (const int *arr, int n, int key) { int i = 0; while (i < n) { if (arr [i] >= key) break; ++i; } return i; } The array is sorted and the function is supposed to return the index of the first element that is greater or equal to the key. They array is not large (below 200 elements) and will be prepared once for a large number of searches. Array elements after the n-th can if necessary be initialized to something appropriate, if that speeds up the search. No, binary search is not allowed, only linear search.

    - by Chris Marisic
    Monitoring my global exception logs this error seems to be impossible to remove no matter what I do, I thought I finally got rid of it but it's back again. You can see a strack trace of the error on a similar post here. Notes about the environment: IIS 6.0, .NET 3.5 SP1 single server ASP.NET application Steps already taken: <system.web> <machineKey validationKey="big encryption key" decryptionKey="big decryption key" validation="SHA1" decryption="AES" /> In my Page Base for all of my pages protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) { const string viewStateKey = "big key value"; Page.ViewStateUserKey = viewStateKey; } Also in the source of the page I can see that all of the ASP.NET generated hidden fields are correctly at the top of the page.

  • Why does this code fail in D2010, but not D7?

    - by Tom1952
    Why does this code get an access error on the Result := Buffer line in D2010, but not D7? Something, I'd guess, involving UniCode, but the compiler doesn't generate any warnings. Any suggestions on an elegant workaround? function GetTempPathAndFileName( const aExtension: string): string; var Buffer: array[0..MAX_PATH] of Char; begin repeat GetTempPath(SizeOf(Buffer) - 1, Buffer); GetTempFileName(Buffer, '~', 0, Buffer); Result := Buffer; // <--- crashes on this line, Result := ChangeFileExt(Result, aExtension); until not FileExists(Result); end; { GetTempPathAndFileName }

  • C++0x regex in GCC

    - by rwallace
    The following code: #include <regex> using namespace std; (snippage) regex_search(s, m, re); works in Microsoft C++, but GCC 4.4.3 gives the following error message: /usr/include/c++/4.4/tr1_impl/regex:2255: warning: inline function ‘bool std::regex_search(_Bi_iter, _Bi_iter, std::match_results<_Bi_iter, _Allocator&, const std::basic_regex<_Ch_type, _Rx_traits&, std::regex_constants::match_flag_type) [with _Bi_iter = __gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator, std::allocator , _Allocator = std::allocator, std::allocator , _Ch_type = char, _Rx_traits = std::regex_traits]’ used but never defined Of course it wouldn't surprise me if regex were simply one of the C++0x features still on the to-do list for GCC, but what I'm scratching my head over is, in that case, why does it happily take the include directive, variable declarations etc. and only trip over the function call (which it even seems to understand). Is there something I'm missing?

  • How can I refactor this to use an inline function or template instead of a macro?

    - by BillyONeal
    Hello, everyone :) I have a useful macro here: #define PATH_PREFIX_RESOLVE(path, prefix, environment) \ if (boost::algorithm::istarts_with(path, prefix)) { \ ExpandEnvironmentStringsW(environment, buffer, MAX_PATH); \ path.replace(0, (sizeof(prefix)/sizeof(wchar_t)) - 1, buffer); \ if (Exists(path)) return path; \ } It's used about 6 times within the scope of a single function (that's it), but macros seem to have "bad karma" :P Anyway, the problem here is the sizeof(prefix) part of the macro. If I just replace this with a function taking a const wchar_t[], then the sizeof() will fail to deliver expected results. Simply adding a size member doesn't really solve the problem either. Making the user supply the size of the constant literal also results in a mess of duplicated constants at the call site. Any ideas on this one?

  • C: sprintf and recursion

    In C, is it possible to use recursion within the sprintf function ? For some reason I get a segmentation fault when I do it: inline char *TreeNode_toString(const TreeNode *node) { char *out; if(TreeNode_isExternal(node)) // If the node has no children... { sprintf(out, "%s:%.2f", node->name, node->distance); } else // The node is strictly binary, so it will have two non-null children { char *l = TreeNode_toString(node->l); // l = left child char *r = TreeNode_toString(node->r); // r = right child sprintf(out, "(%s,%s):%.2f", l, r, node->distance); } return out; }
