Building a calendar navigation in Rails (controller and view links)

Trying to get the next month when clicking the link_to. I understand I am missing something from this Update I have found that the actual issue is that the `params[:next_month] is a string and I am trying to add a date to to it. Which means I need to convert the string to a date/time object. Test application On Web API side I use the same sample application as in previous Web API posts – very primitive web application to manage contacts. Same way we can use also platforms like Java, PERL and Ruby.

Battleship! Back in 2003, (when I was 17,) I competed in a Battleship AI coding competition. Even though I lost that tournament, I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from it. Now, I would like to resurrect this competition, in the search of the best battleship AI. Here is the framework: Battleship.zip The winner will be awarded +450 reputation! The competition will be held starting on the 17th of November, 2009. No entries or edits later than zero-hour on the 17th will be accepted. (Central Standard Time) Submit your entries early, so you don't miss your opportunity! To keep this OBJECTIVE, please follow the spirit of the competition. Rules of the game: The game is be played on a 10x10 grid. Each competitor will place each of 5 ships (of lengths 2, 3, 3, 4, 5) on their grid. No ships may overlap, but they may be adjacent. The competitors then take turns firing single shots at their opponent. A variation on the game allows firing multiple shots per volley, one for each surviving ship. The opponent will notify the competitor if the shot sinks, hits, or misses. Game play ends when all of the ships of any one player are sunk. Rules of the competition: The spirit of the competition is to find the best Battleship algorithm. Anything that is deemed against the spirit of the competition will be grounds for disqualification. Interfering with an opponent is against the spirit of the competition. Multithreading may be used under the following restrictions: No more than one thread may be running while it is not your turn. (Though, any number of threads may be in a "Suspended" state). No thread may run at a priority other than "Normal". Given the above two restrictions, you will be guaranteed at least 3 dedicated CPU cores during your turn. A limit of 1 second of CPU time per game is allotted to each competitor on the primary thread. Running out of time results in losing the current game. Any unhandled exception will result in losing the current game. Network access and disk access is allowed, but you may find the time restrictions fairly prohibitive. However, a few set-up and tear-down methods have been added to alleviate the time strain. Code should be posted on stack overflow as an answer, or, if too large, linked. Max total size (un-compressed) of an entry is 1 MB. Officially, .Net 2.0 / 3.5 is the only framework requirement. Your entry must implement the IBattleshipOpponent interface. Scoring: Best 51 games out of 101 games is the winner of a match. All competitors will play matched against each other, round-robin style. The best half of the competitors will then play a double-elimination tournament to determine the winner. (Smallest power of two that is greater than or equal to half, actually.) I will be using the TournamentApi framework for the tournament. The results will be posted here. If you submit more than one entry, only your best-scoring entry is eligible for the double-elim. Small website on Amazon EC2 Linux: a single large instance or more small instances in load balancing?

I need to run a small website with a JSON webservice on Amazon EC2 Linux. The largest number of requests come from the JSON webservice, which provides some load in terms of MySQL queries. I'm trying to decide between two choices: A single large instance (Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit) with full LAMP stack or One or two small instances (Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit) with Apache/PHP only One small instance dedicated to MySQL (or RDS) Which setup would you consider to be more performant?

jqGrid adding new row with XML Data

Hi Everyone, I am using jQGrid in my ASP.NET MVC application with add row feature. My problem is I have to save XML data in some of the row fields. But while posting the new row with some fields having plain xml, to server I get Internal server error. By default jqGrid perhaps expects json or text data to be posted on server while adding a new row. I used beforeSubmit method for workaround to convert xml first to json and then send to server, but while converting json back to xml I lose the orginal structure of the xml. FYI: I used JsonReaderWriterFactory on server to convert it back. Your help will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Why does this call to jQuery's $.ajax() fire an empty request in Chrome and Firefox?

Hello, I am trying to call a WCF RESTful service from jQuery. I am using JSON to encode both request and response. I've inherited JavaScript code where the success callback of an Ajax handler initiates another Ajax call where the success callback may or may not initiate another Ajax call. This leads to deeply nested anonymous functions. SignalR: hub invokation request

I'm writing custom SignalR client and I need to implement hub invokation. As I understood from .NET client code, I need to send post request to the following url (after establishing connection with server): http://serverurl/signalr/send?transport=serverSentEvents&connectionId=<my_connection_id> . In request body I need to send json string containing basic information about the invoked method. My question is how should this json look like? I'm trying to send smth like this (again, judging by .NET client code): {"data" : {"Hub" : "hubname", "Method" : "methodname", "Args" : {"message" : "msg"} } } But I get the following error: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: s. What am I doing wrong? What are required parameters of sending json and how should it be formatted?

Kohana and Javscript path

I have a following Kohana setup: All my files are placed under 'public_html/koh' My js files are placed under 'public_html/koh/media/js/' I use html::script helper to include those javascript files which generates me following html code: In my js I access one of controllers like 'json/getsomething' (which is http://localhost/koh/json/getsomething). It works OK as long as I'm staying in top of the controller: http://localhost/koh/home When I go to 'http://localhost/koh/home/index' it renders the same page of course but 'json/getsomething' is not accessible from Javascript anymore. How can I solve this problem? Include Javascript using absolute path? Create a variable in js like var fullPath = 'http://localhost/koh/'? What is the best practice to do it? Leonti

C# UTF8 output keep encoded characters intact

Hello, i have a very simple question I can't seem to get my head around. I have a properly encoded UTF8-String I parse into a JObject with Json.NET, fiddle around with some values and write it to the commandline, keeping the encoded characters intact. Everything works great except for the keeping the encoded characters intact part. Code: var json = "{roster: [[\"Tulg\u00f4r\", 990, 1055]]}"; var j = JObject.Parse(json); for (int i = 0; i < j["roster"].Count(); i++) { j["roster"][i][1] = ((int)j["roster"][i][1]) * 3; j["roster"][i][2] = ((int)j["roster"][i][2]) * 3; } Console.WriteLine(JsonConvert.SerializeObject(j, Formatting.None)); Actual Output: {"roster":[["Tulgôr",2970,3165]]} Desired Output: {"roster":[["Tulg\u00f4r",2970,3165]]} It seems like my phrasing in Google is inappropriate since nothing useful came up. I'm sure it's something uber-easy and i will feel pretty stupid afterwards. :)

I can watch the results returned via Firebug and the JSON is correct there as well. Also, while the list only says "undefined" it does say that the same number of times as records returned in JSON. I am selecting an IEnumerable<dynamic> from the database using Rob Conery's Massive framework. The structure comes back in a flat format Poco C#. I need to transform the data and output it to a Json array (format show at bottom). I thought I could do the transform using linq (my unsuccessful effort is shown below): using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Json; using System.Linq; using System.ServiceModel.Web; .... Classic ASP Request.Form removes spaces?

SQLite character encoding for Google Gears

We're using jQuery to get a JSON-string from our server (UTF-8 response, also UTF-8 request through jQuery) and put this JSON into a Google Gears WorkerPool. This workerpool processes the JSON and stores it into a Gears database (SQLite). It turns out that, apparently, SQLite stores data using iso-8859-1 rather than UTF-8. Since we're trying to store user names that might contain Cyrillic characters (and others that you might encounter in Europe), this goes horribly wrong. Can anyone tell me how to change the character encoding in either the Gears WorkerPool or the SQLite database that Gears employs? Of course, if I'm looking in the wrong direction with my problem, feel free to offer alternatives! Unfortunately, HTML5 isn't an option as we're supposed to support IE7 primarily.

Making an Ajax request to a page method in ASP.NET MVC 2

When I run this, firebug gets a 200 OK, but the data received is null. I've tried a lot of different approaches, like having the data in text (wish grants me "(an empty string)" instead of just "null") or returning string in the server method... I'm trying to create a REST service in zend framework. I'm using zend server. When is JavaScript's eval() not evil?

I'm writing some JavaScript to parse user-entered functions (for spreadsheet-like functionality). Having parsed the formula I could convert it into JavaScript and run eval() on it to yield the result. However, I've always shied away from using eval() if I can avoid it because it's evil (and, rightly or wrongly, I've always thought it is even more evil in JavaScript because the code to be evaluated might be changed by the user). Obviously one has to use eval() to parse JSON (I presume that JS libraries use eval() for this somewhere, even if they run the JSON through a regex check first), but when else, other than when manipulating JSON, it is OK to use eval()?

Hello! I have the coordinates of my marker. Now I want to get the address of the marker. So I searched the web and found google maps reserve geocode. Now I tried to do the following: $.getJSON('http://maps.google.com/maps/api/geocode/json?latlng='+point.lat()+','+ point.lng() +'&key='+apiKey+'&sensor=false&output=json&callback=?', function(data) { console.log(data); }); When I try to show the address, meaning getting the json, firebug throws the following error: invalid label on "status": "OK",\n I searched a lot, but didn't find an answer solving my problem. Can you tell me whats wrong with my code? Is there another way to get the address data for the coordinates?

How can I create a web based administration interface.

Hi all, I'm planning to create a simple web based interface that stores administration input in json format (for use later by an applicaiton running on the same host) example json output is here: http://www.json.org/example.html The content would be user contacts (email, name, phone number, photo etc..) There would need to be a conf file per logged in user. and an administrator user for viewing all config files in his group. I'm wondering what technology is best to create this framework. I could do it via servlets etc.. however, there may be something simpler.. Thanks to all for your replies in advance.
