    - by user1104836
    I want to capture a photo manually not by using existing camera apps. So i made this Activity: public class CameraActivity extends Activity { private Camera mCamera; private Preview mPreview; @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_camera); // Create an instance of Camera // mCamera = Camera.open(0); // Create our Preview view and set it as the content of our activity. mPreview = new Preview(this); mPreview.safeCameraOpen(0); FrameLayout preview = (FrameLayout) findViewById(R.id.camera_preview); preview.addView(mPreview); } @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { // Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present. getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.activity_camera, menu); return true; } } This is the CameraPreview which i want to use: public class Preview extends ViewGroup implements SurfaceHolder.Callback { SurfaceView mSurfaceView; SurfaceHolder mHolder; //CAM INSTANCE ================================ private Camera mCamera; List<Size> mSupportedPreviewSizes; //============================================= /** * @param context */ public Preview(Context context) { super(context); mSurfaceView = new SurfaceView(context); addView(mSurfaceView); // Install a SurfaceHolder.Callback so we get notified when the // underlying surface is created and destroyed. mHolder = mSurfaceView.getHolder(); mHolder.addCallback(this); mHolder.setType(SurfaceHolder.SURFACE_TYPE_PUSH_BUFFERS); } /** * @param context * @param attrs */ public Preview(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) { super(context, attrs); // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub } /** * @param context * @param attrs * @param defStyle */ public Preview(Context context, AttributeSet attrs, int defStyle) { super(context, attrs, defStyle); // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub } /* (non-Javadoc) * @see android.view.ViewGroup#onLayout(boolean, int, int, int, int) */ @Override protected void onLayout(boolean arg0, int arg1, int arg2, int arg3, int arg4) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } @Override public void surfaceChanged(SurfaceHolder holder, int format, int width, int height) { // Now that the size is known, set up the camera parameters and begin // the preview. • [Android] Force close when trying to parse JSON with AsyncTask in the background

    - by robs
    Hello everyone, i'm new to android development and i'm playing around with json data. I managed to get the parsing to work. I want to show a ProgressDialog and i read that i need to use AsyncTask that. But for some reason i get a force close as soon as i put the same working code inside doInBackground() eventhough eclipse says everything is fine. Here is the source code: public class HomeActivity extends Activity { public class BackgroundAsyncTask extends AsyncTask<Void, Integer, Void> { ProgressDialog dialog = new ProgressDialog (HomeActivity.this); @Override protected void onPreExecute() { dialog.setMessage("Loading...please wait"); dialog.setIndeterminate(true); dialog.setCancelable(false); dialog.show(); } protected void onPostExecute() { dialog.dismiss(); } @Override protected Void doInBackground(Void... params) { try { URL json = new URL("http://www.corps-marchia.de/jsontest.php"); URLConnection tc = json.openConnection(); BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(tc.getInputStream())); String line; while ((line = in.readLine()) != null) { JSONArray ja = new JSONArray(line); JSONObject jo = (JSONObject) ja.get(0); TextView txtView = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.TextView01); txtView.setText(jo.getString("text")); } } catch (MalformedURLException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (JSONException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } return null; } } @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); new BackgroundAsyncTask().execute(); } } Here is the error log: 01-08 12:33:48.225: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(815): FATAL EXCEPTION: • connecting clients to server with emulator on different computers

    - by prolink007
    I am writing an application that communicates using sockets. I have a server running on one android emulator on a computer, then i have 2 other clients running on android emulators on 2 other computers. I am trying to get the 2 clients to connect to the server. This works when i run the server and clients on the same computer, but when i attempt to do this on the same wifi network and on separate computers it gives me the following error. The client and server code is posted below. A lot is stripped out just to show the important stuff. Also, after the server starts i telnet into the server and run these commands redir add tcp:5000:6000 (i have also tried without doing the redir but it still says the same thing). Then i start the clients and get the error. Thanks for the help! Both the 5000 port and 6000 port are open on my router. And i have windows firewall disabled on the computer hosting the server. 11-27 18:54:02.274: W/ActivityManager(60): Activity idle timeout for HistoryRecord{44cf0a30 school.cpe434.ClassAidClient/school.cpe434.ClassAid.ClassAidClient4Activity} 11-27 18:57:02.424: W/System.err(205): java.net.SocketException: The operation timed out 11-27 18:57:02.454: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.platform.OSNetworkSystem.connectSocketImpl(Native Method) 11-27 18:57:02.454: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.platform.OSNetworkSystem.connect(OSNetworkSystem.java:114) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:245) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:220) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at java.net.Socket.startupSocket(Socket.java:780) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at java.net.Socket.<init>(Socket.java:314) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at school.cpe434.ClassAid.ClassAidClient4Activity.onCreate(ClassAidClient4Activity.java:102) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.Instrumentation.callActivityOnCreate(Instrumentation.java:1047) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2459) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2512) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2200(ActivityThread.java:119) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(ActivityThread.java:1863) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4363) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) The server code public class ClassAidServer4Activity extends Activity { ServerSocket ss = null; String mClientMsg = ""; String mClientExtraMsg = ""; Thread myCommsThread = null; public static final int SERVERPORT = 6000; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); TextView tv = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView1); tv.setText("Nothing from client yet"); this.myCommsThread = new Thread(new CommsThread()); this.myCommsThread.start(); } class CommsThread implements Runnable { public void run() { // Socket s = null; try { ss = new ServerSocket(SERVERPORT ); } catch (IOException e1) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e1.printStackTrace(); } while(true) { try { Socket socket = ss.accept(); connectedDeviceCount++; Thread lThread = new Thread(new ListeningThread(socket)); lThread.start(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } class ListeningThread implements Runnable { private Socket s = null; public ListeningThread(Socket socket) { // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub this.s = socket; } @Override public void run() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub while (!Thread.currentThread().isInterrupted()) { Message m = new Message(); // m.what = QUESTION_ID; try { if (s == null) s = ss.accept(); BufferedReader input = new BufferedReader( new InputStreamReader(s.getInputStream())); String st = null; st = input.readLine(); String[] temp = parseReadMessage(st); mClientMsg = temp[1]; if(temp.length > 2) { mClientExtraMsg = temp[2]; } m.what = Integer.parseInt(temp[0]); myUpdateHandler.sendMessage(m); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } } The client code public class ClassAidClient4Activity extends Activity { //telnet localhost 5554 //redir add tcp:5000:6000 private Socket socket; private String serverIpAddress = "192.168.1.102"; private static final int REDIRECTED_SERVERPORT = 5000; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); try { InetAddress serverAddr = InetAddress.getByName(serverIpAddress); socket = new Socket(serverAddr, REDIRECTED_SERVERPORT); } catch (UnknownHostException e1) { mQuestionAdapter.add("UnknownHostException"); e1.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e1) { mQuestionAdapter.add("IOException"); e1.printStackTrace(); } } }

  • Android Video Camera : still picture

    - by Alex
    I use the camera intent to capture video. Here is the problem: If I use this line of code, I can record video. But onActivityResult doesn't work. Intent intent = new Intent("android.media.action.VIDEO_CAMERA"); If I use this line of code, after press the recording button, the camera is freezed, I mean, the picture is still. Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_VIDEO_CAPTURE); BTW, when I use $Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE); to capture a picture, it works fine. The java file is as follows: package com.camera.picture; import java.io.File; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; import java.util.Date; import android.app.Activity; import android.content.ContentValues; import android.content.Intent; import android.net.Uri; import android.os.Bundle; import android.os.Environment; import android.provider.MediaStore; import android.util.Log; import android.view.View; import android.widget.Button; import android.widget.ImageView; import android.widget.Toast; import android.widget.VideoView; public class PictureCameraActivity extends Activity { private static final int IMAGE_CAPTURE = 0; private static final int VIDEO_CAPTURE = 1; private Button startBtn; private Button videoBtn; private Uri imageUri; private Uri videoUri; private ImageView imageView; private VideoView videoView; /** Called when the activity is first created. * sets the content and gets the references to * the basic widgets on the screen like * {@code Button} or {@link ImageView} */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); imageView = (ImageView)findViewById(R.id.img); videoView = (VideoView)findViewById(R.id.videoView); startBtn = (Button) findViewById(R.id.startBtn); startBtn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { startCamera(); } }); videoBtn = (Button) findViewById(R.id.videoBtn); videoBtn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub startVideoCamera(); } }); } public void startCamera() { Log.d("ANDRO_CAMERA", "Starting camera on the phone..."); String fileName = "testphoto.jpg"; ContentValues values = new ContentValues(); values.put(MediaStore.Images.Media.TITLE, fileName); values.put(MediaStore.Images.Media.DESCRIPTION, "Image capture by camera"); values.put(MediaStore.Images.Media.MIME_TYPE, "image/jpeg"); imageUri = getContentResolver().insert( MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, values); Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE); intent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, imageUri); intent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_VIDEO_QUALITY, 1); startActivityForResult(intent, IMAGE_CAPTURE); } protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) { if (requestCode == IMAGE_CAPTURE) { if (resultCode == RESULT_OK){ Log.d("ANDROID_CAMERA","Picture taken!!!"); imageView.setImageURI(imageUri); } } if (requestCode == VIDEO_CAPTURE) { if (resultCode == RESULT_OK) { Log.d("ANDROID_CAMERA","Video taken!!!"); Toast.makeText(this, "Video saved to:\n" + data.getData(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); videoView.setVideoURI(videoUri); } } } private void startVideoCamera() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub //create new Intent Log.d("ANDRO_CAMERA", "Starting camera on the phone..."); String fileName = "testvideo.mp4"; ContentValues values = new ContentValues(); values.put(MediaStore.Video.Media.TITLE, fileName); values.put(MediaStore.Video.Media.DESCRIPTION, "Video captured by camera"); values.put(MediaStore.Video.Media.MIME_TYPE, "video/mp4"); videoUri = getContentResolver().insert( MediaStore.Video.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, values); Intent intent = new Intent("android.media.action.VIDEO_CAMERA"); //Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_VIDEO_CAPTURE); intent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, videoUri); intent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_VIDEO_QUALITY, 1); // start the Video Capture Intent startActivityForResult(intent, VIDEO_CAPTURE); } private static File getOutputMediaFile() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub // To be safe, you should check that the SDCard is mounted // using Environment.getExternalStorageState() before doing this.     hi, in my servlet i called an instance of a class.java( a class that construct an html table) in order to create this table in my jsp. the servlet is like the following: String report=request.getParameter("selrep"); String datev=request.getParameter("datepicker"); String op=request.getParameter("operator"); String batch =request.getParameter("selbatch"); System.out.println("report kind was:"+report); System.out.println("date was:"+datev); System.out.println("operator:"+op); System.out.println("batch:"+batch); if(report.equalsIgnoreCase("Report Denied")) { DeniedReportDisplay rd = new DeniedReportDisplay(); rd.ConstruireReport(); } else if(report.equalsIgnoreCase("Report Locked")) { LockedReportDisplay rl = new LockedReportDisplay(); rl.ConstruireReport(); } request.getRequestDispatcher("EspaceValidation.jsp").forward(request, response); in my jsp i can not display this table even empty or full. note: exemple a class that construct denied Report has this structure: /*constructeur*/ public DeniedReportDisplay() {} /*Methodes*/ @SuppressWarnings("unchecked") public StringBuffer ConstruireReport() { StringBuffer retour=new StringBuffer(); int i = 0; retour.append("<table border = 1 width=900 id=sheet align=left>"); retour.append("<tr bgcolor=#0099FF>" ); retour.append("<label> Denied Report</label>"); retour.append("</tr>"); retour.append("<tr>"); String[] nomCols ={"Nom","Prenom","trackingDate","activity","projectcode","WAName","taskCode","timeSpent","PercentTaskComplete","Comment"}; //String HQL_QUERY = null; for(i=0;i< nomCols.length;i++) { retour.append(("<td bgcolor=#0066CC>")+ nomCols[i] + "</td>"); } retour.append("</tr>"); retour.append("<tr>"); try { s= HibernateUtil.currentSession(); tx=s.beginTransaction(); Query query = s.createQuery("select opcemployees.Nom,opcemployees.Prenom,dailytimesheet.TrackingDate,dailytimesheet.Activity," + "dailytimesheet.ProjectCode,dailytimesheet.WAName,dailytimesheet.TaskCode," + "dailytimesheet.TimeSpent,dailytimesheet.PercentTaskComplete from Opcemployees opcemployees,Dailytimesheet dailytimesheet " + "where opcemployees.Matricule=dailytimesheet.Matricule and dailytimesheet.Etat=3 " + "group by opcemployees.Nom,opcemployees.Prenom" ); for(Iterator it=query.iterate();it.hasNext();) { if(it.hasNext()){ Object[] row = (Object[]) it.next(); retour.append("<td>" +row [0]+ "</td>");//Nom retour.append("<td>" + row [1] + "</td>");//Prenom retour.append("<td>" + row [2] + "</td>");//trackingdate retour.append("<td>" + row [3]+ "</td>");//activity retour.append("<td>" + row [4] +"</td>");//projectcode retour.append("<td>" + row [5]+ "</td>");//waname retour.append("<td>" + row [6] + "</td>");//taskcode retour.append("<td>" + row [7] + "</td>");//timespent retour.append("<td>" + row [8] + "</td>");//perecnttaskcomplete retour.append("<td><input type=text /></td>");//case de commentaire } retour.append("</tr>"); } //terminer la table. retour.append ("</table>"); tx.commit(); } catch (HibernateException e) { retour.append ("</table><H1>ERREUR:</H1>" +e.getMessage()); e.printStackTrace(); } return retour; } thanks for help.

  • MVVM in Task-It

    As I'm gearing up to write a post about dynamic XAP loading with MEF, I'd like to first talk a bit about MVVM, the Model-View-ViewModel pattern, as I will be leveraging this pattern in my future posts. Download Source Code Why MVVM? Your first question may be, "why do I need this pattern? I've been using a code-behind approach for years and it works fine." Well, you really don't have to make the switch to MVVM, but let me first explain some of the benefits I see for doing so. MVVM Benefits Testability - This is the one you'll probably hear the most about when it comes to MVVM. Moving most of the code from your code-behind to a separate view model class means you can now write unit tests against the view model without any knowledge of a view (UserControl). Multiple UIs - Let's just say that you've created a killer app, it's running in the browser, and maybe you've even made it run out-of-browser. Now what if your boss comes to you and says, "I heard about this new Windows Phone 7 device that is coming out later this year. Can you start porting the app to that device?". Well, now you have to create a new UI (UserControls, etc.) because you have a lot less screen real estate to work with. So what do you do, copy all of your existing UserControls, paste them, rename them, and then start changing the code? Hmm, that doesn't sound so good. But wait, if most of the code that makes your browser-based app tick lives in view model classes, now you can create new view (UserControls) for Windows Phone 7 that reference the same view model classes as your browser-based app. Page state - In Silverlight you're at some point going to be faced with the same issue you dealt with for years in ASP.NET, maintaining page state. Let's say a user hits your Products page, does some stuff (filters record, etc.), then leaves the page and comes back later. It would be best if the Products page was in the same state as when they left it right? Well, if you've thrown away your view (UserControl or Page) and moved off to another part of the UI, when you come back to Products you're probably going to re-instantiate your view...which will put it right back in the state it was when it started. Hmm, not good. Well, with a little help from MEF you can store the state in your view model class, MEF will keep that view model instance hanging around in memory, and then you simply rebind your view to the view model class. I made that sound easy, but it's actually a bit of work to properly store and restore the state. At least it can be done though, which will make your users a lot happier! I'll talk more about this in an upcoming blog post. No event handlers? Another nice thing about MVVM is that you can bind your UserControls to the view model, which may eliminate the need for event handlers in your code-behind. So instead of having a Click handler on a Button (or RadMenuItem), for example, you can now bind your control's Command property to a DelegateCommand in your view model (I'll talk more about Commands in an upcoming post). Instead of having a SelectionChanged event handler on your RadGridView you can now bind its SelectedItem property to a property in your view model, and each time the user clicks a row, the view model property's setter will be called. Now through the magic of binding we can eliminate the need for traditional code-behind based event handlers on our user interface controls, and the best thing is that the view model knows about everything that's going on...which means we can test things without a user interface. The brains of the operation So what we're seeing here is that the view is now just a dumb layer that binds to the view model, and that the view model is in control of just about everything, like what happens when a RadGridView row is selected, or when a RadComboBoxItem is selected, or when a RadMenuItem is clicked. It is also responsible for loading data when the page is hit, as well as kicking off data inserts, updates and deletions. Once again, all of this stuff can be tested without the need for a user interface. If the test works, then it'll work regardless of whether the user is hitting the browser-based version of your app, or the Windows Phone 7 version. Nice! The database Before running the code for this app you will need to create the database. First, create a database called MVVMProject in SQL Server, then run MVVMProject.sql in the MVVMProject/Database directory of your downloaded .zip file. This should give you a Task table with 3 records in it. When you fire up the solution you will also need to update the connection string in web.config to point to your database instead of IBM12\SQLSERVER2008. The code One note about this code is that it runs against the latest Silverlight 4 RC and WCF RIA Services code. Please see my first blog post about updating to the RC bits. Beta to RC - Part 1 At the top of this post is a link to a sample project that demonstrates a sample application with a Tasks page that uses the MVVM pattern. This is a simplified version of how I have implemented the Tasks page in the Task-It application. Youll notice that Tasks.xaml has very little code to it. Just a TextBlock that displays the page title and a ContentControl. <StackPanel>     <TextBlock Text="Tasks" Style="{StaticResource PageTitleStyle}"/>     <Rectangle Style="{StaticResource StandardSpacerStyle}"/>     <ContentControl x:Name="ContentControl1"/> </StackPanel> In List.xaml we have a RadGridView. Notice that the ItemsSource is bound to a property in the view model class call Tasks, SelectedItem is bound to a property in the view model called SelectedItem, and IsBusy is bound to a property in the view model called IsLoading. <Grid>     <telerikGridView:RadGridView ItemsSource="{Binding Tasks}" SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedItem, Mode=TwoWay}"                                  IsBusy="{Binding IsLoading}" AutoGenerateColumns="False" IsReadOnly="True" RowIndicatorVisibility="Collapsed"                IsFilteringAllowed="False" ShowGroupPanel="False">         <telerikGridView:RadGridView.Columns>             <telerikGridView:GridViewDataColumn Header="Name" DataMemberBinding="{Binding Name}" Width="3*"/>             <telerikGridView:GridViewDataColumn Header="Due" DataMemberBinding="{Binding DueDate}" DataFormatString="{}{0:d}" Width="*"/>         </telerikGridView:RadGridView.Columns>     </telerikGridView:RadGridView> </Grid> In Details.xaml we have a Save button that is bound to a property called SaveCommand in our view model. We also have a simple form (Im using a couple of controls here from Silverlight.FX for the form layout, FormPanel and Label simply because they make for a clean XAML layout). Notice that the FormPanel is also bound to the SelectedItem in the view model (the same one that the RadGridView is). The two form controls, the TextBox and RadDatePicker) are bound to the SelectedItem's Name and DueDate properties. These are properties of the Task object that WCF RIA Services creates. <StackPanel>     <Button Content="Save" Command="{Binding SaveCommand}" HorizontalAlignment="Left"/>     <Rectangle Style="{StaticResource StandardSpacerStyle}"/>     <fxui:FormPanel DataContext="{Binding SelectedItem}" Style="{StaticResource FormContainerStyle}">         <fxui:Label Text="Name:"/>         <TextBox Text="{Binding Name, Mode=TwoWay}"/>         <fxui:Label Text="Due:"/>         <telerikInput:RadDatePicker SelectedDate="{Binding DueDate, Mode=TwoWay}"/>     </fxui:FormPanel> </StackPanel> In the code-behind of the Tasks control, Tasks.xaml.cs, I created an instance of the view model class (TasksViewModel) in the constructor and set it as the DataContext for the control. The Tasks page will load one of two child UserControls depending on whether you are viewing the list of tasks (List.xaml) or the form for editing a task (Details.xaml). // Set the DataContext to an instance of the view model class var viewModel = new TasksViewModel(); DataContext = viewModel;   // Child user controls (inherit DataContext from this user control) List = new List(); // RadGridView Details = new Details(); // Form When the page first loads, the List is loaded into the ContentControl. // Show the RadGridView first ContentControl1.Content = List; In the code-behind we also listen for a couple of the view models events. The ItemSelected event will be fired when the user clicks on a record in the RadGridView in the List control. The SaveCompleted event will be fired when the user clicks Save in the Details control (the form). Here the view model is in control, and is letting the view know when something needs to change. // Listeners for the view model's events viewModel.ItemSelected += OnItemSelected; viewModel.SaveCompleted += OnSaveCompleted; The event handlers toggle the view between the RadGridView (List) and the form (Details). void OnItemSelected(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) {     // Show the form     ContentControl1.Content = Details; }   void OnSaveCompleted(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) {     // Show the RadGridView     ContentControl1.Content = List; } In TasksViewModel, we instantiate a DataContext object and a SaveCommand in the constructor. DataContext is a WCF RIA Services object that well use to retrieve the list of Tasks and to save any changes to a task. Ill talk more about this and Commands in future post, but for now think of the SaveCommand as an event handler that is called when the Save button in the form is clicked. DataContext = new DataContext(); SaveCommand = new DelegateCommand(OnSave); When the TasksViewModel constructor is called we also make a call to LoadTasks. This sets IsLoading to true (which causes the RadGridViews busy indicator to appear) and retrieves the records via WCF RIA Services.         public LoadOperation<Task> LoadTasks()         {             // Show the loading message             IsLoading = true;             // Get the data via WCF RIA Services. When the call has returned, called OnTasksLoaded.             return DataContext.Load(DataContext.GetTasksQuery(), OnTasksLoaded, false);         } When the data is returned, OnTasksLoaded is called. This sets IsLoading to false (which hides the RadGridViews busy indicator), and fires property changed notifications to the UI to let it know that the IsLoading and Tasks properties have changed. This property changed notification basically tells the UI to rebind. void OnTasksLoaded(LoadOperation<Task> lo) {     // Hide the loading message     IsLoading = false;       // Notify the UI that Tasks and IsLoading properties have changed     this.OnPropertyChanged(p => p.Tasks);     this.OnPropertyChanged(p => p.IsLoading); } Next lets look at the view models SelectedItem property. This is the one thats bound to both the RadGridView and the form. When the user clicks a record in the RadGridView its setter gets called (set a breakpoint and see what I mean). The other code in the setter lets the UI know that the SelectedItem has changed (so the form displays the correct data), and fires the event that notifies the UI that a selection has occurred (which tells the UI to switch from List to Details). public Task SelectedItem {     get { return _selectedItem; }     set     {         _selectedItem = value;           // Let the UI know that the SelectedItem has changed (forces it to re-bind)         this.OnPropertyChanged(p => p.SelectedItem);         // Notify the UI, so it can switch to the Details (form) page         NotifyItemSelected();     } } One last thing, saving the data. When the Save button in the form is clicked it fires the SaveCommand, which calls the OnSave method in the view model (once again, set a breakpoint to see it in action). public void OnSave() {     // Save the changes via WCF RIA Services. When the save is complete, call OnSaveCompleted.     DataContext.SubmitChanges(OnSaveCompleted, null); } In OnSave, we tell WCF RIA Services to submit any changes, which there will be if you changed either the Name or the Due Date in the form. When the save is completed, it calls OnSaveCompleted. This method fires a notification back to the UI that the save is completed, which causes the RadGridView (List) to show again. public virtual void OnSaveCompleted(SubmitOperation so) {     // Clear the item that is selected in the grid (in case we want to select it again)     SelectedItem = null;     // Notify the UI, so it can switch back to the List (RadGridView) page     NotifySaveCompleted(); } Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Getting TF215097 error after modifying a build process template in TFS Team Build 2010

    - by Jakob Ehn
    When embracing Team Build 2010, you typically want to define several different build process templates for different scenarios. Common examples here are CI builds, QA builds and release builds. For example, in a contiuous build you often have no interest in publishing to the symbol store, you might or might not want to associate changesets and work items etc. The build server is often heavily occupied as it is, so you don’t want to have it doing more that necessary. Try to define a set of build process templates that are used across your company. In previous versions of TFS Team Build, there was no easy way to do this. But in TFS 2010 it is very easy so there is no excuse to not do it! :-)   I ran into a scenario today where I had an existing build definition that was based on our release build process template. In this template, we have defined several different build process parameters that control the release build. These are placed into its own sectionin the Build Process Parameters editor. This is done using the ProcessParameterMetadataCollection element, I will explain how this works in a future post.   I won’t go into details on these parametes, the issue for this blog post is what happens when you modify a build process template so that it is no longer compatible with the build definition, i.e. a breaking change. In this case, I removed a parameter that was no longer necessary. After merging the new build process template to one of the projects and queued a new release build, I got this error:   TF215097: An error occurred while initializing a build for build definition <Build Definition Name>: The values provided for the root activity's arguments did not satisfy the root activity's requirements: 'DynamicActivity': The following keys from the input dictionary do not map to arguments and must be removed: <Parameter Name>.  Please note that argument names are case sensitive. Parameter name: rootArgumentValues <Parameter Name> was the parameter that I removed so it was pretty easy to understand why the error had occurred. However, it is not entirely obvious how to fix the problem. When open the build definition everything looks OK, the removed build process parameter is not there, and I can open the build process template without any validation warnings. The problem here is that all settings specific to a particular build definition is stored in the TFS database. In TFS 2005, everything that was related to a build was stored in TFS source control in files (TFSBuild.proj, WorkspaceMapping.xml..). In TFS 2008, many of these settings were moved into the database. Still, lots of things were stored in TFSBuild.proj, such as the solution and configuration to build, wether to execute tests or not. In TFS 2010, all settings for a build definition is stored in the database. If we look inside the database we can see what this looks like. The table tbl_BuildDefinition contains all information for a build definition. One of the columns is called ProcessParameters and contains a serialized representation of a Dictionary that is the underlying object where these settings are stoded. Here is an example:   <Dictionary x:TypeArguments="x:String, x:Object" xmlns="clr-namespace:System.Collections.Generic;assembly=mscorlib" xmlns:mtbwa="clr-namespace:Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Workflow.Activities;assembly=Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Workflow" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"> <mtbwa:BuildSettings x:Key="BuildSettings" ProjectsToBuild="$/PathToProject.sln"> <mtbwa:BuildSettings.PlatformConfigurations> <mtbwa:PlatformConfigurationList Capacity="4"> <mtbwa:PlatformConfiguration Configuration="Release" Platform="Any CPU" /> </mtbwa:PlatformConfigurationList> </mtbwa:BuildSettings.PlatformConfigurations> </mtbwa:BuildSettings> <mtbwa:AgentSettings x:Key="AgentSettings" Tags="Agent1" /> <x:Boolean x:Key="DisableTests">True</x:Boolean> <x:String x:Key="ReleaseRepositorySolution">ERP</x:String> <x:Int32 x:Key="Major">2</x:Int32> <x:Int32 x:Key="Minor">3</x:Int32> </Dictionary> Here we can see that it is really only the non-default values that are persisted into the databasen. So, the problem in my case was that I removed one of the parameteres from the build process template, but the parameter and its value still existed in the build definition database. The solution to the problem is to refresh the build definition and save it. In the process tab, there is a Refresh button that will reload the build definition and the process template and synchronize them:   After refreshing the build definition and saving it, the build was running successfully again.

  • SQLAuthority News – Meeting with Allen Bailochan Tuladhar – An Unlimited Experience

    - by pinaldave
    Allen  Tuladhar I recently came back from my 9-day trip in Nepal and I must say that this is one of the best trips I had in my lifetime. Allen Bailochan Tuladhar is a wonderful person and an extreme enthusiast for Microsoft Technology. Allen is the Chief Executive Officer of Unlimited Technologies Pvt Ltd., Country Manager of Microsoft MDP Nepal, the Member Secretary of Nepali Language in Information Technology, and member of the Steering Committee of the Government of Nepal. He is the person who keeps the Nepal’s Tech Community constantly motivating and taking it to the next level. I have met Allen for many times before, but this was the first time I was with him in Kathmandu, Nepal. I was very impressed with the amount of the work he does in the community. During my 9 days of stay, every single day was a new lesson for me. I was amazed and overwhelmed with the many things he does every single day. Not only he does he work closely with Government of Nepal ministry, but he is also the most known person in the Student Community. His expertise in the technical subject matter is not limited to one technology; rather, I have seen him actively engaging himself in  discussions of various tech topics. Allen presending at TechMela Kathmandu, Nepal Allen is currently active in working out to localize Windows and Office and incorporate it using the Nepali language. I was able to witness and experience how the localization works, as well as the procedure on how to do such. If you know the whole localization process, you must have realized how big and daunting of a process it is. I was glad that I became a part of it. Prominent Personality of Nepal on Panel Discussion Another great opportunity I had when I was at Allen’s office is that I have learned how the radio technology talk show works. Nepali Radio station has the weekly program in their local language, in which MS technology is discussed and industry leaders are invited to talk about their experience with the technology. I found the program so interesting because it has so much variety in terms of technology subjects. Well, my understanding of Nepali language is limited but I did understand quite a bit. Ravi, Nutan, Pinal, Gandip I got the chance to meet lots of Database Professionals as well. People in Nepal are very polite even though they are very strong in their technology fundamentals. I had in-depth discussion regarding High Availability scenarios, as well Query Tuning. Database professionals from the leading financial sectors of Nepal wanted me to visit their Data Center and help them out with a few advances. In no time, Allen organized a visit for me. He sent me a Nepali-speaking expert from his own organization to accompany me in overcoming any difficulties while I was on my way helping this financial district. Pinal (SQLAuthority) and Deependra (Unlimited) When I was going to Nepal, I was really not sure if I would be able to stay busy for 9 days straight in Community-related activity. However, on the 9th day I realize that I can still stay here for more than 9 days because in every single day, I feel enthusiastic enough to do something new. Allen Bailochan Tuladhar Even though I was working  very hard every day, I hardly had the chance to work with and talk to him one-on-one for the first few days. One of the evenings, Allen invited me to his home and we discussed about his future ideas. I was really surprised to see how much a man can do for his technical community and for his country. When I asked Allen’s wife and daughter if they ever think it’s getting too much with regards to Allen putting tough efforts to the community, their answer was something I did not expect. I found out that Allen’s wife manages all the back office and logistics of the community events and his daughter manages the websites. I felt that they do not have any complain,  and instead, their whole family is in this activity as deeply as it can get, which I thought is a very good thing. Pinal and Allen I want to end this post with an interesting story that happened during our lunch hour at one of the Nepali restaurants. While we were having our lunch and having some chitchat, Allen suddenly stood up and called several people walking along the pavement. He introduced them all to me as Microsoft Student Partners. He asked all of them to order their favorite dish and called the waiter to inform that he will pick up their tab. Figuring out the question written on my face, he just said one sentence: “They are all future technology professionals who are going to make all of us proud.” I guess I have a lot of things to learn. Hats off to Allen! • Recommendation for high performance WPF Chart

    - by Ajaxx
    We're working on a WPF-based desktop application that charts financial markets information (candlestick charts, overlayed indicator curves, volume, etc). The charts are displayed in real-time with responses to market ticks being shown in real-time (updating one to two times per second is probably a reasonable display refresh policy). We've been looking for a software package (commercial is fine by us) that has the capability of displaying these charts. Additionally, we'd like to have an approach that can render the initial amount of data in a reasonable timeframe (give or take 100-200ms from the time we hand the data over to a complete render on screen). Also we view multiple charts (5-10) simultaneously so a solution that chews up 50% of my CPU to display one chart really isn't going to work well. Has anyone had any good experiences with charting controls. We've had to hand roll the last few charts we've done and I'd prefer not to do it again. Solutions that can make use of the GPU to minimize CPU utilization would be nice as well.

  • Why do I recieve multiple warnings of "No running instance of xfce4-panel was found" when logging into Xubuntu?

    - by Fredrik
    I'm running Xubuntu 11.04, the bootup-time is quite fast but when I log in it takes close to a minute before the desktop is displayed, meanwhile I see no activity on the hard drive. When I finally have the desktop I see this notification repeated 10 times: and then this one: In .config/autostart I have these entries $ ls xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop xfce4-clipman-plugin-autostart.desktop xfce-panel.desktop $ cat xfce-panel.desktop [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Version=0.9.4 Type=Application Name=xfce4-panel Comment= Exec=xfce4-panel StartupNotify=false Terminal=false Hidden=false I need some assistance to locate the slow startup, which logs to look at etc. And then this annoying message about xfce-panel. Where do I look for from where it is started.

  • networkActivityIndicatorVisible on iOS 4

    - by user365660
    Hi, I just downloaded xcode 3.2.3 (seperate directory installation) and ios 4 to my iphone. I'm having a problem with networkActivityIndicatorVisible. This works on 3.1.3, both phone and simulator. My code is (void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated { [super viewWillAppear:animated]; UIApplication* app2 = [UIApplication sharedApplication]; app2.networkActivityIndicatorVisible = YES; [self loadSources]; // Loads data in table view app2.networkActivityIndicatorVisible = NO; } I get the same effect in the simulator and on the phone both with ios 4.o The networkActivity indicator becomes visible for a fraction of a second and then invisible and this is done after loading the data for the tableView. Has something changed with this? Teo

  • MFMailComposeViewController: how to get notified when view appears?

    - by Karsten Silz
    In my app, users can take a picture with the camera or pick one from the library and email it as an attachment. I use the MFMailComposeViewController for seamless email. On my iPhone 3GS, it takes about 5-7 seconds for the email view to appear with the attachment. Now I want to show a progress indicator view when the user pushes the "Send" button and hide that view when the email view comes up. The problem is that the MFMailComposeViewController delegate only calls when the email sending is done. Can I get notified somehow when the email window appears on the screen?

  • Textures on top of other textures when using VBOs

    - by GameDev-er
    I'm currently making a cube style game. With chunks being drawn with VBOs. I'd like to know if there is a way to create an overlay texture on top of the existing texture without the need to rebuild the VBO. This is required to show activity in a cube (think of Minecraft when destroying a block and the little cracks start spreading). I believe these are called "decals" but I've not found how to use them with VBOs. So how do I draw decals on OpenGL VBO drawn cubes?

  • T-SQL Tuesday #005: Reporting

    - by Adam Machanic
    This month's T-SQL Tuesday is hosted by Aaron Nelson of SQLVariations . Aaron has picked a really fantastic topic: Reporting . Reporting is a lot more than just SSRS. Whether or not you realize it, you deal with all sorts of reports every day. Server up-time reports. Application activity reports. And even DMVs, which as Aaron points out are simply reports about what's going on inside of SQL Server. This month's topic can be twisted any number of ways, so have fun and be creative! I'm really looking...(read more)

  • World Record Oracle Business Intelligence Benchmark on SPARC T4-4

    - by Brian
    Oracle's SPARC T4-4 server configured with four SPARC T4 3.0 GHz processors delivered the first and best performance of 25,000 concurrent users on Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (BI EE) 11g benchmark using Oracle Database 11g Release 2 running on Oracle Solaris 10. A SPARC T4-4 server running Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g achieved 25,000 concurrent users with an average response time of 0.36 seconds with Oracle BI server cache set to ON. The benchmark data clearly shows that the underlying hardware, SPARC T4 server, and the Oracle BI EE 11g (11.1.1.6.0 64-bit) platform scales within a single system supporting 25,000 concurrent users while executing 415 transactions/sec. The benchmark demonstrated the scalability of Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g 11.1.1.6.0, which was deployed in a vertical scale-out fashion on a single SPARC T4-4 server. Oracle Internet Directory configured on SPARC T4 server provided authentication for the 25,000 Oracle BI EE users with sub-second response time. A SPARC T4-4 with internal Solid State Drive (SSD) using the ZFS file system showed significant I/O performance improvement over traditional disk for the Web Catalog activity. In addition, ZFS helped get past the UFS limitation of 32767 sub-directories in a Web Catalog directory. The multi-threaded 64-bit Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g and SPARC T4-4 server proved to be a successful combination by providing sub-second response times for the end user transactions, consuming only half of the available CPU resources at 25,000 concurrent users, leaving plenty of head room for increased load. The Oracle Business Intelligence on SPARC T4-4 server benchmark results demonstrate that comprehensive BI functionality built on a unified infrastructure with a unified business model yields best-in-class scalability, reliability and performance. Oracle BI EE 11g is a newer version of Business Intelligence Suite with richer and superior functionality. Results produced with Oracle BI EE 11g benchmark are not comparable to results with Oracle BI EE 10g benchmark. Oracle BI EE 11g is a more difficult benchmark to run, exercising more features of Oracle BI. Performance Landscape Results for the Oracle BI EE 11g version of the benchmark. Results are not comparable to the Oracle BI EE 10g version of the benchmark. The Oracle BI EE benchmark test used five different business user roles - Marketing Executive, Sales Representative, Sales Manager, Sales Vice-President, and Service Manager. These roles included a maximum of 5 different pre-built dashboards. Each dashboard page had an average of 5 reports in the form of a mix of charts, tables and pivot tables, returning anywhere from 50 rows to approximately 500 rows of aggregated data. The test scenario also included drill-down into multiple levels from a table or chart within a dashboard. The benchmark test scenario uses a typical business user sequence of dashboard navigation, report viewing, and drill down. For example, a Service Manager logs into the system and navigates to his own set of dashboards using Service Manager. The BI user selects the Service Effectiveness dashboard, which shows him four distinct reports, Service Request Trend, First Time Fix Rate, Activity Problem Areas, and Cost Per Completed Service Call spanning 2002 to 2005. The user then proceeds to view the Customer Satisfaction dashboard, which also contains a set of 4 related reports, drills down on some of the reports to see the detail data. The BI user continues to view more dashboards – Customer Satisfaction and Service Request Overview, for example. After navigating through those dashboards, the user logs out of the application. The benchmark test is executed against a full production version of the Oracle Business Intelligence 11g Applications with a fully populated underlying database schema. The business processes in the test scenario closely represent a real world customer scenario. • Talking JavaOne with Rock Star Martijn Verburg

    - by Janice J. Heiss
    JavaOne Rock Stars, conceived in 2005, are the top-rated speakers at each JavaOne Conference. They are awarded by their peers, who, through conference surveys, recognize them for their outstanding sessions and speaking ability. Over the years many of the world’s leading Java developers have been so recognized. Martijn Verburg has, in recent years, established himself as an important mover and shaker in the Java community. His “Diabolical Developer” session at the JavaOne 2011 Conference got people’s attention by identifying some of the worst practices Java developers are prone to engage in. Among other things, he is co-leader and organizer of the thriving London Java User Group (JUG) which has more than 2,500 members, co-represents the London JUG on the Executive Committee of the Java Community Process, and leads the global effort for the Java User Group “Adopt a JSR” and “Adopt OpenJDK” programs. Career highlights include overhauling technology stacks and SDLC practices at Mizuho International, mentoring Oracle on technical community management, and running off shore development teams for AIG. He is currently CTO at jClarity, a start-up focusing on automating optimization for Java/JVM related technologies, and Product Advisor at ZeroTurnaround. He co-authored, with Ben Evans, "The Well-Grounded Java Developer" published by Manning and, as a leading authority on technical team optimization, he is in high demand at major software conferences.Verburg is participating in five sessions, a busy man indeed. Here they are: CON6152 - Modern Software Development Antipatterns (with Ben Evans) UGF10434 - JCP and OpenJDK: Using the JUGs’ “Adopt” Programs in Your Group (with Csaba Toth) BOF4047 - OpenJDK Building and Testing: Case Study—Java User Group OpenJDK Bugathon (with Ben Evans and Cecilia Borg) BOF6283 - 101 Ways to Improve Java: Why Developer Participation Matters (with Bruno Souza and Heather Vancura-Chilson) HOL6500 - Finding and Solving Java Deadlocks (with Heinz Kabutz, Kirk Pepperdine, Ellen Kraffmiller and Henri Tremblay) When I asked Verburg about the biggest mistakes Java developers tend to make, he listed three: A lack of communication -- Software development is far more a social activity than a technical one; most projects fail because of communication issues and social dynamics, not because of a bad technical decision. Sadly, many developers never learn this lesson. No source control -- Developers simply storing code in local filesystems and emailing code in order to integrate Design-driven Design -- The need for some developers to cram every design pattern from the Gang of Four (GoF) book into their source code All of which raises the question: If these practices are so bad, why do developers engage in them? “I've seen a wide gamut of reasons,” said Verburg, who lists them as: * They were never taught at high school/university that their bad habits were harmful.* They weren't mentored in their first professional roles.* They've lost passion for their craft.* They're being deliberately malicious!* They think software development is a technical activity and not a social one.* They think that they'll be able to tidy it up later.A couple of key confusions and misconceptions beset Java developers, according to Verburg. “With Java and the JVM in particular I've seen a couple of trends,” he remarked. “One is that developers think that the JVM is a magic box that will clean up their memory, make their code run fast, as well as make them cups of coffee. The JVM does help in a lot of cases, but bad code can and will still lead to terrible results! The other trend is to try and force Java (the language) to do something it's not very good at, such as rapid web development. So you get a proliferation of overly complex frameworks, libraries and techniques trying to get around the fact that Java is a monolithic, statically typed, compiled, OO environment. It's not a Golden Hammer!”I asked him about the keys to running a good Java User Group. “You need to have a ‘Why,’” he observed. “Many user groups know what they do (typically, events) and how they do it (the logistics), but what really drives users to join your group and to stay is to give them a purpose. For example, within the LJC we constantly talk about the ‘Why,’ which in our case is several whys:* Re-ignite the passion that developers have for their craft* Raise the bar of Java developers in London* We want developers to have a voice in deciding the future of Java* We want to inspire the next generation of tech leaders* To bring the disparate tech groups in London together* So we could learn from each other* We believe that the Java ecosystem forms a cornerstone of our society today -- we want to protect that for the futureLooking ahead to Java 8 Verburg expressed excitement about Lambdas. “I cannot wait for Lambdas,” he enthused. “Brian Goetz and his group are doing a great job, especially given some of the backwards compatibility that they have to maintain. It's going to remove a lot of boiler plate and yet maintain readability, plus enable massive scaling.”Check out Martijn Verburg at JavaOne if you get a chance, and, stay tuned for a longer interview yours truly did with Martijn to be publish on otn/java some time after JavaOne.
