• Questions on Juval Lowy's IDesign C# Coding Standard

  We are trying to use the IDesign C# Coding standard. Unfortunately, I found no comprehensive document to explain all the rules that it gives, and also his book does not always help. Here are the open questions that remain for me (from chapter 2, Coding Practices): No. 26: Avoid providing explicit values for enums unless they are integer powers of 2 No. 34: Always explicitly initialize an array of reference types using a for loop No. 50: Avoid events as interface members No. 52: Expose interfaces on class hierarchies No. 73: Do not define method-specific constraints in interfaces No. 74: Do not define constraints in delegates Here's what I think about those: I thought that providing explicit values would be especially useful when adding new enum members at a later point in time. If these members are added between other already existing members, I would provide explicit values to make sure the integer representation of existing members does not change. No idea why I would want to do this. I'd say this totally depends on the logic of my program. I see that there is alternative option of providing "Sink interfaces" (simply providing already all "OnXxxHappened" methods), but what is the reason to prefer one over the other? Unsure what he means here: Could this mean "When implementing an interface explicitly in a non-sealed class, consider providing the implementation in a protected virtual method that can be overridden"? (see Programming .NET Components 2nd Edition, end of chapter “Interfaces and Class Hierarchies”). I suppose this is about providing a "where" clause when using generics, but why is this bad on an interface? • Dynamic Dispatch without Virtual Functions

  I've got some legacy code that, instead of virtual functions, uses a kind field to do dynamic dispatch. This example is simplified. The actual code has about a dozen different subtypes of POD, and a couple dozen methods. New subtypes of POD and new methods are added pretty frequently, and so every time we do that, we have to update all these switch statements. The typical way to handle this would be to declare the function members virtual in the POD class, but we can't do that because the objects reside in shared memory. There is a lot of code that depends on these structs being plain-old-data, so even if I could figure out some way to have virtual functions in shared-memory objects, I wouldn't want to do that. So, I'm looking for suggestions as to the best way to clean this up so that all the knowledge of how to call the subtype methods is centralized in one place, rather than scattered among a couple dozen switch statements in a couple dozen functions. What occurs to me is that I can create some sort of adapter class that wraps a POD and uses templates to minimize the redundancy. But before I start down that path, I'd like to know how others have dealt with this.

• MySql selecting default value if there are no result?

  i'm having 2 tables: members and comments. I select all members, and then join comments. But in comments I'm selecting some SUM of points, and if user never commented, I can't get that user in listing?! • Can't add or remove object from NSMutableSet

The UI part works great--toggles the image used for the button, and I can see from other stuff that the thisEvent.isFavorite BOOL is toggling happily. I can also see in the debugger that I'm getting my DataManager singleton. NSLog(@"Adding event %@ to eventList", event.title); [eventList addObject:event]; NSLog(@"eventList now has %d members", [eventList count]); [event release]; As you can see, I've peppered the code with NSLog love notes to myself.   I'm trying to extract and restore a Security Descriptor of a NTFS file, via Windows API - XP SP3, I'm trying to understand which functions are actually able to do it properly, but I simply fail. I found this Remark over MSDN: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa379573%28VS.85%29.aspx "Some SECURITY_INFORMATION members work only with the SetNamedSecurityInfo function.   I understand what the typical access specifiers are, and what they mean. 'public' members are accessible anywhere, 'private' members are accessible only by the same class and friends, etc. What I'm wondering is what, if anything, this equates to in lower-level terms. Are their any post-compilation functional differences between these beyond the high-level restrictions (what can access what) imposed by the language (c++ in this case) they're used in. Another way to put it - if this were a perfect world where programmers always made good choices (like not accessing members that may change later and using only well defined members that should stay the same between implementations), would their be any reason to use these things?

• Unidirectional synchronization and admin back-end

  I have Wordpress installation on two web nodes (load balancing/failover). There is unidirectional synchronization from server A to server B so any updates must occur on the first web node. I have a problem with Wordpress admin side. I'm using Nginx and the initial plan was to create rewrite rule from domain.com/wp-admin to wpadmin.domain.com - pointing to the first node. The problem is that the Wordpress installation can be access only via main domain and without extra subdomain there is no distinction between both web servers for the rewrite rule. Could you please advise if there is any other solution in this case. Regards

• Using "mv" or "ditto" to merge folders in OS X

  Used to the Windows way of doing I just found out OS X has no merge function – moving means replacing the folder. While this does make sense, I miss merging! I've two Wordpress directories, 1 contains default source and 2 contains worked version with plugins custom theme etc. I want to see difference between this two, so I'm putting it on SVN. Folder 1 is already up, now in theory I should simply merge contents of 2 with 1 by replacing everything with contents of 2 but leaving hidden SVN files untouched. Unfortunately OS X, when moving, replaces the folder so that my SVN client goes crazy and doesn't understand folder structure anymore. So, I believe my options are mv and ditto, but which one would you use in my situation and how? sudo mv wordpress /Documents/svn/wwwholiday/trunk/wordpress I want mv to overwrite everything it finds, but leave alone whatever is already inside folder 1 and has no duplicate in folder 2.

• Setting up a server with only subdomains, any connection to top level goes to main server on another IP?

  I'm developing a web app where users will have their own sub-domain to login to and use the application. I'm running wordpress for the main website to manage the public / front end. Our application is developed in zend framework. The zf project is currently in a subfolder on the main server. I'd like to place the zend framework project onto another server (different IP) and keep it separate from the the wordpress front end www.domain.com site. The zf application server will run nginx. I'm not sure how to setup a server to run strictly sub domains. Setting up the virtual hosts in the configuration file is no problem. To give the users username.domain.com. But what about the main default configuration file? How would that be configured since the top level domain is technically another server (wordpress) on another IP?

  First of all, am new to doing back-end server admin.. I have a main website being served on at certain IP. I have a blog address that lives on another IP, which was used on wordpress.com. When a user typed in blog.domain.com it would resolve to the Wordpress.com site. Since coming on board (two months) they wanted me to bring the blog in house. So, I set up a wordpress install at domain.com/blog. I would like blog.domain.com (different ip) to resolve to domain.com/blog but still using blog.domain.com is this possible with Apache and mod_rewrite?

  I'm running Wordpress website with Nginx and Memcached. I have simple DNS round robin balancing with A records pointing to both web servers. I'm not sure if this related to Memcached or maybe some configuration issue on the server itself? Regards

• mod_rewrite to redirect to specific WP page

  The goal is to redirect all requests coming to Wordpress from IE 6 and 7, to a specific Wordpress page using mod_rewrite. My confusion comes from multiple conditions that are needed for the rewrite not entering an endless loop once on the specific Wordpress page. So the condition must be: (IE 6 or 7) and request is not the same as the page we are sending them to. I've tried things along the lines of: RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} MSIE\ ([67])\. RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !iepage RewriteRule .* /iepage/ [R] In IE 6 and 7, I get page cannot be displayed errors. Could it really mean too many redirects, because the 2nd condition isn't working?

  I have moved my website from a Wiki to Wordpress and in the process, realised that I have broken links to some popular pages on my website. Is it possible to fix this with a rewrite rule? I need the rule to redirect anything beginning with "^/wiki/(.+)$" to "/$1" but also replacing the "_" character used in MediaWiki slugs to "-" used in Wordpress slugs. For example: http://example.com/wiki/An_Example_Page should be pointed to: http://example.com/an-example-page Is it possible to write such a rewrite rule? Edit: It appears that Wordpress doesn't even care if the "/wiki/" part is removed - provided the slug matches, and that seems to be case-insensitive too. So all I need to do is change the "_" characters to "-" in the slugs.

• What is a good basic/flexible cms for a small website? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which Content Management System (CMS) should I use? I'm designing a very basic portfolio website for an artist. It features a blog, portfolio, cv and contact page. I've handcoded the basics of this site in php/java, as it is a very small website (and I like coding by hand). But I need a simple cms backend for the dynamic parts of the website (the blog/portfolio). The big systems (ruby, joomla, wordpress) are far too invasive for my liking (and frankly a bit beyond my capabilities). Wordpress for example, requires too much adaptation of the design to the wordpress structure, and ruby is far too extensive for a simple site like this (in my opinion). So what I'm looking for is a (preferably open source) cms that has a simple backend for the artist to use as a blogger, with a mysql database for the content, that will allow me to insert content with simple tags (using smarty tags for example), but is otherwise not too invasive or demanding in terms of the required page structure. Does anyone know of a good cms that fits this description? p.s.: I have tried phpnews and cmsmadesimple, but phpnews was a litte too basic (but very close too what I'm looking for) and cmsmadesimple was way too slow (but otherwise also pretty close too what I wanted, though a bit too extensive).

• Goal Tracking data seems to be inaccurate?

  I setup some Goal Tracking about one week ago. I had multiple goals in one set. The goal itself was the "send" button being pressed on the callback form (i did that by pushing a pageview to Google Analytics everytime the send button is pressed) For each goal, i listed the first step as a required step. So for example, the ILR Page was step 1 and set as required and the goal was "/CallbackFormFilled" Looking at the stats a week later i'm getting some very inflated numbers especially when comparing them to my manually filled excel spreadsheet and i'm struggling to understand the cause of this behaviour. I'm unable to attach screenshots unfortunately since my StackExchange account for this site is brand new My own thoughts My own thoughts were that maybe its because i have setup multiple goals with the same end goal URL, but i thought that was a valid setup since i want to track multiple routes so to speak(?) I've disabled all other goals for now to confirm this, but im waiting for stats to come in as i write this. I also wonder if the contact form im using in Wordpress is causing a problem, but i've simply added one javascript line on the send button that pushes a pageview so not sure if that should cause an issue. • PHP safe_mode is a pain, looking for advice (Ubuntu 12.04 server, public webserver)

  Maybe askUbuntu isn't the right forum or I haven't provided the right search query but I haven't seen anything in my searching of askUbuntu on PHP safe_mode. I get lots of Windows Safe Mode and Ubuntu Safe Mode results but not PHP safe_mode. So I keep running into one issue after another regarding PHP safe_mode. (I write a lot of my own PHP code for various site maintenance tools and such.) I know safe_mode is going away in the next version of PHP but I still see a fair amount of advice recommending that you leave it enabled. I've recently consolidated from 3 servers down to 1 and at least one of those old servers had safe_mode disabled without any issues. (The lack of issues may have simply been a matter of good luck.) None of the previous 3 gave me this much trouble so I'm guessing so additional php.ini/PHP safe_mode setting was turned on for the new server. I primarily run WordPress for my websites with a few MediaWiki sites sprinkled in. And I am currently running into an issue using WordPress's auto update feature as it doesn't seem to be able to use fopen. WordPress is not relaying the actual error message to me but since I was just able to update the plugins I'm using this is a safe_mode problem. I've had a lot of safe_mode issues since consolidating to this new server. Long story short, the advice I'd seen to use safe_mode was all at least 2 years old. Do I really need it? If I disable PHP safe_mode are there a good set of security measures I should implement - i.e. chmod 640 /var/www/..., add this to your .htaccess, etc - to protect my server/sites? Thanks

• PostgreSQL, Ubuntu, NetBeans IDE (Part 1)

  While setting up PostgreSQL from scratch, with the aim to use it in NetBeans IDE, I found the following resources helpful: http://railskey.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/postgresql-installation-in-ubuntu-12-04/ http://ohdevon.wordpress.com/2011/09/17/postgresql-to-netbeans-1/ http://ohdevon.wordpress.com/2011/09/19/postgresql-to-netbeans-2/ For quite a while I had problems relating to  "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432", which had something to do with "postmaster.pid", which I somehow solved via a link I can't find anymore, and which may not have been a problem to begin with. A key moment was this one, which was useful for setting the password of a new user I'd created: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7695962/postgresql-password-authentication-failed-for-user-postgres This was useful for setting up a table in my database, which I did by pasting in the below into NetBeans after I made the connection there: http://use-the-index-luke.com/sql/example-schema/postgresql/where-clause Now I have a database set up with all permissions everywhere (which turned out to be the hard part) correct: The next step will be to create a NetBeans Platform application based on this database. I'm assuming it shouldn't be any different to what's described in the NetBeans Platform CRUD Tutorial.
