• WinForms - How do I access/call methods in UI thread from a separate thread without passing a delega

  Hi, QUESTION: In .NET 3.5 WinForms apps, how do I access/call methods in UI thread from a separate thread, without passing a delegate? EXAMPLE: Say I have some code I want to run both (a) manually when the user clicks a button, and (b) periodically called by a process which is running in a separate non-mainUI thread but without passing a delegate. [Simplistically I'm thinking that the class that has this method is already been constructed, and the main UI thread has a handle to it, therefore if the process running in the separate thread could just get a handle to it from the main-UI thread it could call it. Hopefully this is not a flawed concept] BACKGROUND: I'm actually after a way to do the above for the case where my separate process thread is actually a job I schedule using quartz.net. The way the scheduler works I can't seem to actually pass in a delegate. There is a way to pass JobDetails, however it only seems to caters for things like string, int, etc. Hence what I'm after is a way to access the MainForm class for example, to call a method on it, from within the quartz.net job which runs in a separate thread. • Has form post behavior changed in modern browsers? (or How are double clicks handled by the browser)

  Background: We are in the process of writing a registration/payment page, and our philosophy was to code all validation and error checking on the server side first, and then add client side validation as a second step (un-obstructive jQuery). We wanted to disable double clicks server side, so we wrote some locking, thread-safe code to handle simultaneous posts/race conditions. When we tried to test this, we realized that we could not cause a simultaneous post or race condition to occur. I thought that (in older browsers anyway) double clicking a submit button worked as follows: User double clicks submit button. Browser sends a post on the first click On the second click, browser cancels/ignores initial post, and initiates a second post (before the first post has returned with a response). Browser waits for second post to return, ignoring initial post response. I thought that from the server side it looked like this: Server gets two simultaneous post requests, executes and responds to them both (unaware that no one is listening to the first response). From our testing (FireFox 3.0, IE 8.0) this is what actually happens: User double clicks submit button Browser sends a post for the first click Browser queues up second click, but waits for the response from the first click. Response returns from first click (response is ignored?). Browser sends a post for the second click. So from a server side: Server receives a single post which it executes and responds to. Then, server receives a second request wich it executes and responds to. My question is, has this always worked this way (and I'm losing my mind)? Or is this a new feature in modern browsers that prevents simultaneous posts to be sent to the server? It seems that for server side double click prevention, we don't have to worry about simultaneous posts or race conditions. Only need to worry about queued up posts. • Is there a modern free D?VCS that can ignore mainframe sequence numbers?

  I'm looking at migrating a large suite of IBM Assembler Language programs, from a vcs based on "filenames include version numbers", to a modern vcs which will give me, among other things, the ability to branch and merge. These files have 80-column records, the last 8 columns being an almost-meaningless sequence number. For a number of reasons which I don't really want to waste space by going into, I need the vcs to ignore (but hopefully preserve in some well-defined manner) the sequence number columns, and to diff and patch based only on the contents of the first 72 columns. Any ideas? Just to clarify "ignore but preserve": I accept it's a bit vague, as I haven't fully collected my ideas yet. It would be something along the lines of this: "When merging/patching, if one side has sequence numbers, output them; if more-than-one side has sequence numbers, use those present in file (1|2|3)" Why do I want to preserve sequence numbers? First, they really are sequence numbers. Second, I want to reintegrate this stuff back onto the mainframe, where sequence numbers can be terribly significant. (Those of you who know what "SMP/E" means will understand. Those who don't, be happy, but tremble...) I've just realised I hadn't accepted an answer. Difficult choice, but @Noldorin comes closest to where I have to go.

• How do you pass a BitmapImage from a background thread to the UI thread in WPF?

  I have a background thread that generates a series of BitmapImage objects. Each time the background thread finishes generating a bitmap, I would like to show this bitmap to the user. The problem is figuring out how to pass the BitmapImage from the background thread to the UI thread. This is an MVVM project, so my view has an Image element: <Image Source="{Binding GeneratedImage}" /> My view-model has a property GeneratedImage: private BitmapImage _generatedImage; public BitmapImage GeneratedImage { get { return _generatedImage; } set { if (value == _generatedImage) return; _generatedImage= value; RaisePropertyChanged("GeneratedImage"); } } My view-model also has the code that creates the background thread: public void InitiateGenerateImages(List<Coordinate> coordinates) { ThreadStart generatorThreadStarter = delegate { GenerateImages(coordinates); }; var generatorThread = new Thread(generatorThreadStarter); generatorThread.ApartmentState = ApartmentState.STA; generatorThread.IsBackground = true; generatorThread.Start(); } private void GenerateImages(List<Coordinate> coordinates) { foreach (var coordinate in coordinates) { var backgroundThreadImage = GenerateImage(coordinate); // I'm stuck here...how do I pass this to the UI thread? } } I'd like to somehow pass backgroundThreadImage to the UI thread, where it will become uiThreadImage, then set GeneratedImage = uiThreadImage so the view can update. • Is there really such a thing as a char or short in modern programming?

  Howdy all, I've been learning to program for a Mac over the past few months (I have experience in other languages). Obviously that has meant learning the Objective C language and thus the plainer C it is predicated on. So I have stumbles on this quote, which refers to the C/C++ language in general, not just the Mac platform. With C and C++ prefer use of int over char and short. The main reason behind this is that C and C++ perform arithmetic operations and parameter passing at integer level, If you have an integer value that can fit in a byte, you should still consider using an int to hold the number. If you use a char, the compiler will first convert the values into integer, perform the operations and then convert back the result to char. So my question, is this the case in the Mac Desktop and IPhone OS environments? I understand when talking about theses environments we're actually talking about 3-4 different architectures (PPC, i386, Arm and the A4 Arm variant) so there may not be a single answer. Nevertheless does the general principle hold that in modern 32 bit / 64 bit systems using 1-2 byte variables that don't align with the machine's natural 4 byte words doesn't provide much of the efficiency we may expect. For instance, a plain old C-Array of 100,000 chars is smaller than the same 100,000 ints by a factor of four, but if during an enumeration, reading out each index involves a cast/boxing/unboxing of sorts, will we see overall lower 'performance' despite the saved memory overhead?

• What does it mean for an OS to "execute within user processes"? Do any modern OS's use that approach

  I have recently become interested in operating system, and a friend of mine lent me a book called Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles (I have the third edition), published in 1998. It's been a very interesting book so far, but I have come to the part dealing with process control, and it's using UNIX System V as one of its examples of an operating system that executes within user processes. This concept has struck me as a little strange. First of all, does this mean that OS instructions and data are stored in each user of the processes? Probably not, because that would be an absurdly redundant scheme. But if not, then what does it mean to "execute within" a user process? Do any modern operating systems use this approach? It seems much more logical to have the operating system execute as its own process, or even independently of all processes, if you're short on memory. All the inter-accessiblilty of process data required for this layout seems to greatly complicate things. (But maybe that's just because I don't quite get the concept ;D) Here is what the book says: "Execution within User Processes: An alternative that is common with operation systems on smaller machines is to execute virtually all operating system software in the context of a user process. ... "

• Localisable Resources: how can (should one?!) wrap a UI layer source as a BL layer service?

  A service that returns localised strings could be wrapped in a service, so that it could be used both locally (eg in an MVC app) and remotely (eg possibly Silverlight). But...if sticking with the standard practice of creating resources in the UI assembly, that would in effect make a lower layer (BL/Services) have to have a ref on a higher layer (UI)...a definite no-no. And whereas a lot of AppWide resources (eg: AppName, OK, Cancel, etc.) could be defined in a Common cross-cutting assembly, and the BL/ResourceSerouce could ref and wrap those, that doesn't work in a a Modular App, where the Core app should have no binding to/knowledge of any Module. One solution could be to have each module, once mounted in mem, 'register' their Resource files with the service, who would then return it to the service (rather a long round trip, but at least consistent as a service, and potentially resources/images could be shared with other resources). Secondly, that may work in a web app...but not sure how that pattern could be extended to a Silverlight modular app (the round tripping becomes prohibitive). ie...what are best practices for allowing Resources to be to be defined by the UI designer, in a higher level, but served from the lower BL layer, as a Service? Or is there a better way of understanding/solving the problem?

• What is a modern C++ approach to structures containing symbolic constants?

  enum bool { FALSE = 0, TRUE = 1 }; I'm wondering how to translate this in a modern C++ approach and if there is a well suited container for that; i know that the enum are not really that appreciated, but i can't think about a real alternative in the C++ world. What if would like to associate the execution of a particular method with a state? Ok, this is the part where i will be more verbose. I would like to stress the fact that i'm asking about structures symbolic constants and not about TRUE and FALSE, i'm not that "needy". Suppose that i have a structure that can represent several states with their own constants enum semaphore { GREEN = 0, ORANGE = 1, RED = 2 }; this is C code, now my question is about how to do the same in C++ if there is a better way. My question continue when i ask about the possibility to do something like an automatic triggering when a change of state will occur, for example: int main{ ... semaphore = 1; ... } and without any extra statements this has to trigger a method() just because the semaphore is now orange. I hope that is more clear now.

  How can I detect page zoom level in all modern browsers? While this thread tells how to do it in IE7 and IE8, I can't find good solution for FF, Safari and Chrome. For FF one of the suggested solution FF stores page zoom level for future. So on first page load would I be able to get zoom level? Somewhere I read it works if you're changing zoom level on that page after its loaded. Is there a way to trap 'zoom' event? I need this because some of my calculations are based on no of pixels and they get changed on Zoom. Thanks. Modified sample given by tfl. • Create / build / generate a web form that can be on my server and has modern looks and could be impl

  I have a small web site and would like to add a 'contact us' form and a 'feedback' form. i would like the forms to satisfy the following: 1- be modern looking (with beautiful css effects) 2- the form fields are validated properly and 'inline'. What I mean is once a user skips a required field or enters an email address incorrectly some kind of tooltip or icon is displayed to ask him to cerrect the error (as opposed to a message box that appears after the user clicks 'submit') 3- once the submit button is clicked the form contents are emailed to me. 4- the whole thing can be setup by a noob like myself. 5- no ads on the form I have been searching for at least 5 days for a solution but I can't seem to find anything the would satisfy the above 5 conditions. I don't mind paying for a solution as long as it is hosted on my site and it is a one off payment and not a monthly payment. So far my search has lead me to the following: 1 wufoo. The good: the generated forms seem to look okay but not the best there is. The bad: the free service is limited to 100 submissions. ads on the form. it is not hosted on my server. Paid service requires monthly payments 2- emailmeform: almost same as above except the generated form looks old. They do have an offer where you pay only $4 to get the form and set it up on your own site but that doesn't solve the fact that the forms look old. 3- formAssembly: same as above with minor variations (the generated form looks better) 4- formchamp, formthis, kontaktr,... And other similar online services: the same problem. either the form generated looks outdated or require monthly payments or they put ads...they don't satisfy my conditions. 5- coffeecup form builder. a desktop software. The problem is the generated forms look too old and use flash. 6- simfatic. Another software. Much better than coffeecup. almost satisfies my conditions but the forms not as good as I like. 7- many, many php scripts or html templates that look so outdated or fail when tested (probably because they are too old). Seriously guys, how hard is this. At least 90%+ of website contain at least a 'contact us' form. Why aren't there better solutions? if there is I can't seem to find them. In terms of looks I want something similar to this: http://web-kreation.com/articles/lightform-free-ajaxphp-contact-form/ It is called lightform. And this is a perfect example of what I mean by 'inline' validation. the only problem: there is no script to handle sending the mail. Even if I find one, I don't know how to modify it for my needs. If nothing exists then at least a: 1- form template (html) that looks nice and can easily be modified 2- a validation script that does 'inline' validation like the example above (or similar to it) and can be easily implemented by a noob like me to work with the html form. 3- a php script that will handle sending the email and can be easily implemented (all three working in harmony). • Best practice to handle Parent Form Child Form relation using Presentation Model

  According to Presentation Model notes by Martin Fowler and also on MSDN documentation about Presentation Model, it is explained that the Presentation Model Class should be unaware of the UI class and similarly Business Model Class should be unaware of the Presentation Model class. The UI should databind extensively to the Presentation Model, the Presentation Model in turn will co-ordinate with one or more Domain/Business Model objects to get the job done. The Presentation Model basically presents the Domain Model data in a way to facilitate maximum data binding in UI, allowing the UI take as less decisions as possible and thus increase testability of Presentation behaviours. This also makes the presentation model class generic, i.e. agnostic of any particular UI technology. Now, consider there is a List form (say CustomerList) and there is another Root form (say Customer) and there is a Use Case of allowing to Edit a Customer from the CustomerList form on a button click. For simplicity of discussion, consider that some actions took place when Customer List is opened from menu (i.e. Customer menu clicked) and the Customer List has been shown from the Menu click event. Now as per the above Use Case, I need to open the Customer Root UI (single Customer) from the Customer List. How do I do that? Build necessary objects (BusinessModel, PresentationModel, UI) in click event of Edit button and call CustomerEdit UI from there? Build the CustomerEdit UI from Presentation Model Class and show UI from presentation model? this can be done in any of the two ways below - a. Create objects in the following sequence DomainModel-PresentationModel-UIForm b. Use Unity.Resolve(); Either ways, Presentation Model is violated as the P model now has to the refer the concrete UI assembly, where CustomerEdit is located. Also the P Model has to refer and use a WinForm directly making it less UI technology agnostic. Even though the violations are in theory and can be ignored, I would still seek the community's opinion about whether I am going wrong direction.   Hi all, We have a updatable web site project that is written in c#, it has the usual web form implementation using master page, skins, user controls,...etc. Up to this point we neglect to change the default compilation language from VB to C#. However, the second we change it, we see the following error. Therefore, when the asp.net runtime tries to compile it under C#, it will give a name collision? Does this make sense? Any help is appreciated.

• What are the real-world benefits of declarative-UI languages such as XAML and QML?

  I'm currently evaluating QtQuick (Qt User Interface Creation Kit) which will be released as part of Qt 4.7. QML is the JavaScript-based declarative language behind QtQuick. It seems to be a very powerful concept, but I'm wondering if anybody that's made extensive use of other, more mature declarative-UI languages like XAML in WPF or Silverlight can give any insight into the real-world benefits that can be gained from this style of programming. Various advantages are often cited: Speed of development Forces separation between presentation and logic Better integration between coders and designers UI changes don't require re-compilation Also, are there any downsides? A few potential areas of concern spring to mind: Execution speed Memory usage Added complexity Are there any other considerations that should be taken into account?

• Should I inherit from a stackpanel instead of a stack panel, grid or other UI element or UserControl

  So I'm building a peice of UI that might me in a dialog window or might be in embedded in part of a bigger page. I don't have alot of experience with WPF, but in ASP.NET you always used UserControls, because their wasn't anyt really generic UI inherit to inherit from (and in a way UserControl was just a div). My coworker has written alot of controls that inherit directly from stackpanel. That seems like a decent way of doing things. But when I went to create a control for the code I was going to write I was presented with a dialog that only included the UserControl, which I wasn't that familiar with in the context of WPF. So can someone explain to me the difference from building a control that inherits from user control vs inheriting directly from a stackPanel?

  I am displaying a customized list field with text on the right side and image on the left side.The image comes from a URL dynamically.Initially i am placing a blank image on the left of the list field,then call URLBitmapField class's setURL method,which actually does the processing and places the processed image on top of the blank image.The image gets displayed on the list field,but to see that processed image i need to press any key or click on the list field items.I want the processed image to be displayed automatically in the list field after the processing.Can anyone tell me where i am getting wrong? • How to disable UI control based on domain object's state?

  Here's my problem. I have a somewhat complex domain object, which, depending on its state, responds to certain actions. I think the state pattern is pretty much the solution for that. However, I need to display which actions are possible at any moment in the UI. Ex: The domain object is an audio player. Some songs can't be skipped (like ads), so I need to disable the "next" and "previous" buttons in the GUI so the user have some kind of feedback of which action he can execute. I've looked at Swing's Action class (note: this is not a Java project), but I think I would need to keep every Actions in my domain object class (audio player), so it can enable or disable them depending on its own state (thus, affecting the UI). Is it the way to do it?

  The first time I ever used it was at my current job. Among my coworkers, the feelings toward it for usability are mixed. The other developer doesn't really care one way or the other, as long as Office does everything he needs it to do when writing reports. The top manager likes it because it feels natural, and I feel the same way. But another coworker finds in klunky and hard to use (although she admits that she only uses it at home as her machine hasn't been upgraded yet, and that might change if she uses it more often at work).   Is there such as thing as a text-mode FTP client for Windows 7 ? By 'text-mode' I mean one that runs in a CMD.EXE window as opposed to a Windows GUI application. It also needs to be something along the lines of FileZilla, i.e. menu-driven as opposed to command-entry clients like NcFTP or indeed the built-in one. edit: To avoid confusion, what I mean is an application similar to that pictured (ZTreeWin File Manager), which runs from CMD.EXE and uses text characters for its UI, within the CMD.EXE window. The built-in FTP client, and things like NcFTP offer a prompt at which you issue commands. That's not what I'm looking for.
