    I'm having some trouble understanding the IF clause at the end of this function from Pro JavaScript Design Patterns: function extend(subClass, superClass) { var F = function() {}; F.prototype = superClass.prototype; subClass.prototype = new F(); subClass.prototype.constructor = subClass; subClass.superclass = superClass.prototype; if(superClass.prototype.constructor == Object.prototype.constructor) { superClass.prototype.constructor = superClass; } } The book explains that these lines ensure that the superclass's constructor attribute is correctly set, even if the superclass is the Object class itself. Yet, if I omit those three lines and do the following: function SubClass() {}; extend(SubClass, Object); alert(Object.prototype.constructor == Object); The alert says 'true', which means the superclass's constructor is set correctly even without those last three lines. Under what conditions, then, does this IF statement do something useful? Thanks.

But I'm not satisfy with the video recording, video and audio out of synchronisation also video seems to be in slow motion.     This is something new that I learned about the readonly keyword. Have a look at the following class: 1: public class MyClass 2: { 3: public string Name { get; set; } 4: public int Age { get; set; } 5:  6: private readonly double Delta; 7:  8: public MyClass() 9: { 10: Initializer(); 11: } 12:  13: public MyClass(string name = "", int age = 0) 14: { 15: Name = name; 16: Age = age; 17: Initializer(); 18: } 19:  20: private void Initializer() 21: { 22: Delta = 0.2; 23: } 24: } I have a couple of public properties and a private readonly member. There are two constructors – one that doesn’t take any parameters and the other takes two parameters to initialize the public properties. I’m also calling the Initializer method in both constructors to initialize the readonly member. Now when I build this, the code breaks and the Error window says: “A readonly field cannot be assigned to (except in a constructor or a variable initializer)” Two things after I read this message: It’s such a negative statement. I’d prefer something like: “A readonly field can be assigned to (or initialized) only in a constructor or through a variable initializer” But in my defense, I AM assigning it in a constructor (only indirectly). All I’m doing is creating a method that does it and calling it in a constructor. Turns out, .net was not ‘frameworked’ this way. We need to have the member initialized directly in the constructor. If you have multiple constructors, you can just use the ‘this’ keyword on all except the default constructors to call the default constructor. This default constructor can then initialize your readonly members. This will ensure you’re not repeating the code in multiple places. A snippet of what I’m talking can be seen below: 1: public class Person 2: { 3: public int UniqueNumber { get; set; } 4: public string Name { get; set; } 5: public int Age { get; set; } 6: public DateTime DateOfBirth { get; set; } 7: public string InvoiceNumber { get; set; } 8:  9: private readonly string Alpha; 10: private readonly int Beta; 11: private readonly double Delta; 12: private readonly double Gamma; 13:  14: public Person() 15: { 16: Alpha = "FDSA"; 17: Beta = 2; 18: Delta = 3.0; 19: Gamma = 0.0989; 20: } 21:  22: public Person(int uniqueNumber) : this() 23: { 24: UniqueNumber = uniqueNumber; 25: } 26: } See the syntax in line 22 and you’ll know what I’m talking about. So the default constructor gets called before the one in line 22. These are known as constructor initializers and they allow one constructor to call another. The other ‘myth’ I had about readonly members is that you can set it’s value only once. This was busted as well (I recall Adam and Jamie’s show). Say you’ve initialized the readonly member through a variable initializer.     In this month's Oracle Magazine, Frank Nimphius wrote a very good article about an Oracle ADF Faces dashboard application to support persistent user personalization.     I'm having a problem with something that I'm sure is very simple. I have been using Asp.Net MVC and I decided to start using Asp.Net MVC 2. Something has changed and now I need a little help. The strongly typed helpers are now written like this - <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.State) %> I need to add a default value to a textbox. In the prior version of Asp.Net MVC it was easy to assign a default value. I thought doing the following would work in MVC 2- <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.CountyId, new{ value = 840 })%> This, however, does not work for me in Asp.Net MVC 2. The value is still blank for the textbox. I want to make sure that this isn't some random error that I am having. Has anyone else encountered the same problem? I have searched and searched to find more information on the default property for the html helpers in MVC 2, but I can't find anything. Does anyone out there know how to correctly assign a default value to a textbox in Asp.Net MVC 2?

    Hi, I am starting with Grails and want to have one page with multilanguage content. I started using the tag which works fine. But here is what I want to do: I want to include the default text of the default language right in the text, to avoid switching back and forth in between files. <g:message code="homepage.feature.headline1" default="This is an english text" /> The above works. But now I a have a message which should include a link like this: <g:message code="homepage.feature.headline1" default="This is an english text with <a href='somefile.html'>a link</a>" /> This gives me an exception: org.codehaus.groovy.grails.web.pages.exceptions.GroovyPagesException: Error processing GroovyPageView: Grails tags were not closed! [[<g:message>]] in GSP How can I achieve that I can include a link there? I have tried escaping the < brackets but still no luck. I really would like to avoid splitting up this one sentence into multiple smaller sentences. Thanks Christoph

  • How can I have Windows 8 go to the desktop by default?

    I've played around a smidge with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in a VirtualBox VM and I think the improvements under the hood may be worth tolerating the Metro UI crap. I don't like that the entire screen changes to something I don't care about when I hit the Windows key and start typing but I can deal with it. The one thing I cannot stand, though, is that it starts in the Metro interface by default. I have to hit the "Desktop" tile to get to a normal interface, and while I can hit "escape" to go back to the desktop and dismiss Metro, it doesn't work when you first log in. When you first log in, you have to hit that "Desktop" tile. I know that the Enterprise versions of Windows 8 will go to the desktop by default. I don't know but I would assume that there's probably some registry key that would handle this. Has anyone figured that out yet?

    I want to use google.com instead of google.com.hk as my default search engine in Chrome. I tried to use custom search engine, but they all break search suggestions, not even something like https://encrypted.google.com/search?q=%s&{google:RLZ}{google:acceptedSuggestion} {google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:assistedQueryStats} {google:searchFieldtrialParameter}sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding} which include parameters like acceptedSuggestion that seems to imply seach suggestions being enabled. But no, search suggestions still don't work. In addition. some websites suggest editing Local State file under Chrome's setting folder. I already tried that, and it didn't work at all. So, is there any way to use google.com as default search engine without breaking search suggestions?

    In gmail can we make is:unread the default view? That is, when we load gmail can we configure it so that is:unread is already selected, thereby showing only unread messages by default? Or can we at least configure gmail so that it has a 1 click link that only shows unread mail? The reason for this of course is that it is slow and inefficient to have to type is:unread into the gmail search every time I open it. It would be much more convenient for gmail to load this view by itself when I open gmail.
