• Sql Server 2005 Database Tables - Row Comparison Column By Column.

  Scenario I have an TWO datbase tables of exactly the SAME STRUCTURE. The difference between these tables is that one contains data populated by one application and the other is populated by a different application. Each application is trying to produce the same result, but using two different methods of implementation. Proposed Idea What I want to do, is run both applications, which will roughly produce 35000 rows containing 10 columns each - So all in all, 70000 rows of data, I then want to compare each row of data, COLUMN BY COLUMN to check whether the values are the same or not. Current Thoughts Since there is so much data to compare, I feel that the best way in which to do this would be to write an application, preferably in C# (but if necessary, T-sql), to compare each row of data column by column, and write out any failed comparisons to a text log file. Question Could anybody suggest an efficient way in which to perform column by column row comparison for 70000 rows worth of data? I'm struggling for ideas on how to tackle this problem. Extra Detail The two applications are both written in C# .Net 3.5. The Database is running on Sql Server 2005. Help greatly appreciated.

• Where should global Application Settings be stored on Windows 7?

  Hi everybody, I'm working hard on making my product work seamlessly on Windows 7. The problem is that there is a small set of global (not user-specific) application settings that all users should be able to change. On previous versions I used HKLM\Software\__Company__\__Product__ for that purpose. This allowed Power Users and Administrators to modify the Registry Key and everything worked correctly. Now that Windows Vista and Windows 7 have this UAC feature, by default, even an Administrator cannot access the Key for writing without elevation. A stupid solution would, of course, mean adding requireAdministrator option into the application manifest. But this is really unprofessional since the product itself is extremely far from administration-related tasks. So I need to stay with asInvoker. Another solution could mean programmatic elevation during moments when write access to the Registry Key is required. Let alone the fact that I don't know how to implement that, it's pretty awkward also. It interferes with normal user experience so much that I would hardly consider it an option. What I know should be relatively easy to accomplish is adding write access to the specified Registry Key during installation. I created a separate question for that. This also very similar to accessing a shared file for storing the settings. My feeling is that there must be a way to accomplish what I need, in a way that is secure, straightforward and compatible with all OS'es. Any ideas?

I'm working on a asp.net webpage and I want to add a "search function" (textbox where user inputs name or surname or both or just parts of it and gets back all related information). I have two tables ("Person" and "Application") and I want to display some columns from Person (name and surname) and some from Application (score, position,...). I know how I could do it using sql, but I want to learn more about linq and thus I want to do it using linq. • How to remove empty tables from a MySQL backup file.

  I have multiple large MySQL backup files all from different DBs and having different schemas. I want to load the backups into our EDW but I don't want to load the empty tables. Right now I'm cutting out the empty tables using AWK on the backup files, but I'm wondering if there's a better way to do this. • Looking for MSSQL Table Design Sanity Check for Profile Tables with Dynamic Columns.

  I just want a general sanity check regarding database design. We are building a web system that has both Teachers and Students. Both have accounts in the system. Both have profiles in the system. My question is about the table design of those Profile tables. The Teacher profile is pretty static regarding the metadata associated with it. Each teacher has a set number of fields that exposes information about that individual (schools, degrees, etc). The students, however, are a different case. We are using a windows service to pull varying data about the students from an endless stream of excel spreadsheets. The data gets moved into our database and then the fields appear in association with the student's profile. Accordingly, each and every student may have very different fields in their profile. I originally started with the concept of three tables: Accounts ---------- AccountID TeacherProfiles ---------- TeacherProfileID AccountID SecondarySchool University YearsTeaching Etc... StudentProfiles ---------- StudentProfileID AccountID Header Value The StudentProfiles table would hold the name of the column headers from the excel spreadsheets and the associated values. I have since evolved the design a little to treat Profiles more generically per the attached ERD image. The Teacher and Student "Headers" are stored in a table called "ProfileAttributeTypes" and responses (either from the excel document or via input fields on the web form) are put in a ProfileAttributes table. This way both Student and Teacher profiles can be associated with a dynamic flow of profile fields. The "Permissions" table tells us whether we are dealing with a Student or a Teacher. Since this system is likely to grow quickly, I want to make sure the foundation is solid. Can you please provide feedback about this design and let me know if it seems sound or if you could see problems it might create and, if so, what might be a better approach? Thanks in advance.

• Creating a join based on data from other tables...

  I'm dealing with a database structure that can be defined as "illogical". It has about 100 different schema's with all different table structures per schema. Only one common factor is a "Version" table in each schema containing about 4 fields. (Thus, there are about 100 Version tables in the database.) There's also another table (view, actually) containing a list of all the schema's in the database that have a version table. I need a stored procedure that walks through all the schema's and selects all data from the Version table, adding the schema name as a fifth field to the result. Basically, this stored procedure is to return a list of all version records per schema. My idea: first walk through the schema list to create one new SQL statements that will JOIN all the schema.version tables into one SQL statement. Then I return the result of that query. How to do this? Or does anyone have a better suggestion? (No, redesigning the structure is NOT an option.)

• [Rails3] How to do multiple many to many relationships between the same two tables.

  Hi. I have a model of a club where I want to model the two entities Meeting and Member. There are actually two many-to-many relationships between these entities though, as for any meeting a Member can either be a Speaker or a Guest. Now I am an OO thinker, so would normally just create the two classes and each one would just have two arrays of the other inside, but rails is making me think a bit more data centric here, so I realise I need to break these M2M relationships up with join tables Speakers and Guests which I have done, but now I am having trouble describing the relationships in the models. The two join table models both have "belongs_to :meeting" and "belongs_to :member" and I think that should be sufficient. I am not however sure about the Meeting and Member models though. Each one has "has_many :guests" and "has_many: speakers" but I am not sure if I also want to go: has_many :members, :through = :guests has_many :members, :through = :speakers But I suspect that this is like declaring two "members" that will clash. I also thought about: has_many :guests, :through = :guests has_many :speakers, :through = :speakers Does that make sense? How would ActiveRecord know that they are in fact Members? I have found heaps of examples of polymorphic m2m relationships and m2m relationships where 1 table references itself, but no good examples to help me mode this situation where two separate tables have two different m2m relationships. Anyone got any tips?

• Vim + OmniCppComplete and completing members of class members

  I've noticed that I can't seem to complete members of class members using OmniCppComplete. When I type temp. in the cpp I get a list of string member functions as expected. But if I type str. omnicomplete spits out "Pattern Not Found". I've noticed that the temp. completion only works if I have the using std::string; declaration. How do I get completion to work on my class members?

  Completion on class members which are STL containers is failing. Completion on local objects which are STL containers works fine. For example, given the following files: // foo.h #include <string> class foo { public: void set_str(const std::string &); std::string get_str_reverse( void ); private: std::string str; }; // foo.cpp #include "foo.h" using std::string; string foo::get_str_reverse ( void ) { string temp; temp.assign(str); reverse(temp.begin(), temp.end()); return temp; } /* ----- end of method foo::get_str ----- */ void foo::set_str ( const string &s ) { str.assign(s); } /* ----- end of method foo::set_str ----- */ I've generated the tags for these two files using: ctags -R --c++-kinds=+pl --fields=+iaS --extra=+q . When I type temp. in the cpp I get a list of string member functions as expected. But if I type str. omnicppcomplete spits out "Pattern Not Found". I've noticed that the temp. completion only works if I have the using std::string; declaration. How do I get completion to work on my class members which are STL containers?

• multi-shop orders table and sequential order numbers based on shop

  Hey, I am looking at building a shop solution that needs to be scalable. Currently it retrieves 1-2000 orders on average per day across multiple country based shops (e.g. uk, us, de, dk, es etc.) but this order could be 10x this amount in two years. I am looking at either using separate country-shop databases to store the orders tables, or looking to combine all into one order table. If all orders exist in one table with a global ID (auto num) and country ID (e.g uk,de,dk etc.), each countries orders would also need to have sequential ordering. So in essence, we'd have to have a global ID and a country order ID, with the country order ID being sequential for countries only, e.g. global ID = 1000, country = UK, country order ID = 1000 global ID = 1001, country = DE, country order ID = 1000 global ID = 1002, country = DE, country order ID = 1001 global ID = 1003, country = DE, country order ID = 1002 global ID = 1004, country = UK, country order ID = 1001 THe global ID would be DB generated and not something I would need to worry about. But I am thinking that I'd have to do a query to get the current country order based ID+1 to find the next sequential number. Two things concern me about this: 1) query times when the table has potentially millions of rows of data and I'm doing a read before a write, 2) the potential for ID number clashes due to simultaneous writes/reads. With a MyISAM table the entire table could be locked whilst the last country order + 1 is retrieved, to prevent ID number clashes. I am wondering if anyone knows of a more elegant solution? • Why doesn't this for-loop execute?

  I'm writing a program for an exercise that will read data from a file and format it to be readable. So far, I have a bit of code that will separate a header from the data that goes under it. Now, the for-loop in this program doesn't execute, and I can't figure out why. Does anybody know?

  I have some code as follows: private function onComboChange(evt:Event):void { var temp:Date = df_date.selectedDate; temp.date += 5; df_dateDue.selectedDate = new Date(temp); } In essence, I am trying to add 5 days onto the selected date in df_date, and put that date into df_dateDue. This fires off via an EventListener on a combobox. Both df_date and df_dateDue are dateFields. OK, so the first time that I run this, it works fine; df_date stays the same and df_dateDue is set to 5 days past df_date. However, the next time that I run it, df_dateDue increments by 10 days from df_date, the next time by 15, and so on. So, stepping through the code shows that somehow df_date has become linked to the temp var, and that the temp var is not resetting itself each time the function is called. Example: df_date = 01 Jan, df_dateDue = 01 Jan. Fire off the event, df_date = 01 Jan, df_dateDue = 06 Jan Fire off the event again. At this point, var temp = 06 Jan (even though df_date still shows 01 Jan), and df_dateDue is then set to 11 Jan Fire off the event again. At this point var temp = 11 Jan (even though df_date = 01 Jan), and df_dateDue is then set to 16 Jan What am I missing here?

• How can I exclude words with apostrophes when reading into a table of strings?

This exception is thrown no matter what character I use, so long as it is present within the words I am reading in. I am aware that it is probably a super simple fix, but I just really need another set of eyes to see it. Thanks in advance.

  Hi there I'm in the midst of a university project and have decided to implement a method that can accept information from a text file (in this instance called "locations.txt"). input from the text file will look like this: London 345 456 Madrid 234 345 Beinjing 345 456 Frankfurt 456 567 The function looks like this currently (and you will notice I am missing the While condition to finish adding input when reaches end of text in locations.txt, i tried using eof but this didnt work?!). • Need to sort 3 arrays by one key array

  I am trying to get 3 arrays sorted by one key array in objective c for the iphone, here is a example to help out... Array 1 Array 2 Array 3 Array 4 1 15 21 7 3 12 8 9 6 7 8 0 2 3 4 8 When sorted i want this to look like Array 1 Array 2 Array 3 Array 4 1 15 21 7 2 3 4 8 3 12 8 9 6 7 8 0 So array 2,3,4 are moving with Array 1 when sorted. The other one has a length of 285 items. I determined the length doing this: int count = 0; for (int i = 0; i < temp.Length; i++) { if (temp[i] != null) count++; } Now I want to assign every value in the temp variable to another variable excluding the null values.
