  • Is it OK to write a programming language in Jython? [closed]

    - by Christopher
I've been looking at the tools for writing a programming language and I had a bizarre idea. What If I wrote a full blown programming language in Jython? Is that a practical solution? Will distribution and bundling be a problem? Can that make or break the language's success? In other words, I'm asking if writing a programing language written in Jython is a practical solution for production enviroments?

  • Advise how to write a simple test for this javascript snippet?

    - by resting
I'm trying to start unit testing (not using any testing frameworks) for my javascripts. Here's one example of it. var obj = {}; obj.disableBtn = function ($btn, style) { $btn.attr('disabled','disabled').addClass('disabled').removeClass(style); }; The use case is as such: obj.disableBtn($('.submit'), 'btn-blue'); What it does is simply add the disabled attribute, add the disabled class, and remove the btn-blue style. Please advise how would a typical test case look like in this case. I have a little knowledge on testing using assert(), but have no idea how to go about it when it involves verifying the result on HTML elements.

  • How do you get Matlab to write the BOM (byte order markers) for UTF-16 text files?

    - by Richard Povinelli
    I am creating UTF16 text files with Matlab, which I am later reading in using Java. In Matlab, I open a file called fileName and write to it as follows: fid = fopen(fileName, 'w','n','UTF16-LE'); fprintf(fid,"Some stuff."); In Java, I can read the text file using the following code: FileInputStream fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(fileName); Scanner scanner = new Scanner(fileInputStream, "UTF-16LE"); String s = scanner.nextLine(); Here is the hex output: Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F 10 11 12 13 00000000 73 00 6F 00 6D 00 65 00 20 00 73 00 74 00 75 00 66 00 66 00 s.o.m.e. .s.t.u.f.f. The above approach works fine. But, I want to be able to write out the file using UTF16 with a BOM to give me more flexibility so that I don't have to worry about big or little endian. In Matlab, I've coded: fid = fopen(fileName, 'w','n','UTF16'); fprintf(fid,"Some stuff."); In Java, I change the code to: FileInputStream fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(fileName); Scanner scanner = new Scanner(fileInputStream, "UTF-16"); String s = scanner.nextLine(); In this case, the string s is garbled, because Matlab is not writing the BOM. I can get the Java code to work just fine if I add the BOM manually. With the added BOM, the following file works fine. Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F 10 11 12 13 14 15 00000000 FF FE 73 00 6F 00 6D 00 65 00 20 00 73 00 74 00 75 00 66 00 66 00 ÿþs.o.m.e. .s.t.u.f.f. How can I get Matlab to write out the BOM? I know I could write the BOM out separately, but I'd rather have Matlab do it automatically. Addendum I selected the answer below from Amro because it exactly solves the question I posed. One key discovery for me was the difference between the Unicode Standard and a UTF (Unicode transformation format) (see http://unicode.org/faq/utf_bom.html). The Unicode Standard provides unique identifiers (code points) for characters. UTFs provide mappings of every code point "to a unique byte sequence." Since all but a handful of the characters I am using are in the first 128 code points, I'm going to switch to using UTF-8 as Romeo suggests. UTF-8 is supported by Matlab (The warning shown below won't need to be suppressed.) and Java, and for my application will generate smaller text files. I suppress the Matlab warning Warning: The encoding 'UTF-16LE' is not supported. with warning off MATLAB:iofun:UnsupportedEncoding;

  • How can we write the html tidy coding to insert the closing tag ?

    - by Harikrishna
How can we write html tidy coding only for inserting closing tag in the html file where closing tags are missing ? I am parsing html tabular information using Html Agilitiy Pack. But where the ending tags are missing extracting information with html agility pack are not performed well. And if we write the ending tags manually and then we can extract the information perfectly with html agility pack.So I want to insert the closing tags where they are missing so html agility pack extracts the information perfectly.

  • Best approach to write huge xml data to file?

    - by Kayes
Hi. I'm currently exporting a database table with huge data (100000+ records) into an xml file using XmlTextWriter class and I'm writing directly to a file on the physical drive. _XmlTextWriterObject = new XmlTextWriter(_xmlFilePath, null); While my code runs ok, my question is that is it the best approach? Or should I write the whole xml in memory stream first and then write the xml document in physical file from memory stream? And what are the effects on memory/ performance in both cases?

  • How easy is it to write a Flash app and what tools are needed?

    - by J Lynch
I have been wanting to learn to write a Flash app so that it can be embedded inside a webpage. But is it hard to write one, say, just to show a circle bouncing around the walls of the 4 sides of the Flash window (no gravity, but just like the dot in the game "Pong"), and what tools are needed (and are they free?). Thanks very much.

  • Very different I/O performance in C++ on Windows

    - by Mr.Gate
Hi all, I'm a new user and my english is not so good so I hope to be clear. We're facing a performance problem using large files (1GB or more) expecially (as it seems) when you try to grow them in size. Anyway... to verify our sensations we tryed the following (on Win 7 64Bit, 4core, 8GB Ram, 32 bit code compiled with VC2008) a) Open an unexisting file. Write it from the beginning up to 1Gb in 1Mb slots. Now you have a 1Gb file. Now randomize 10000 positions within that file, seek to that position and write 50 bytes in each position, no matter what you write. Close the file and look at the results. Time to create the file is quite fast (about 0.3"), time to write 10000 times is fast all the same (about 0.03"). Very good, this is the beginnig. Now try something else... b) Open an unexisting file, seek to 1Gb-1byte and write just 1 byte. Now you have another 1Gb file. Follow the next steps exactly same way of case 'a', close the file and look at the results. Time to create the file is the faster you can imagine (about 0.00009") but write time is something you can't believe.... about 90"!!!!! b.1) Open an unexisting file, don't write any byte. Act as before, ramdomizing, seeking and writing, close the file and look at the result. Time to write is long all the same: about 90"!!!!! Ok... this is quite amazing. But there's more! c) Open again the file you crated in case 'a', don't truncate it... randomize again 10000 positions and act as before. You're fast as before, about 0,03" to write 10000 times. This sounds Ok... try another step. d) Now open the file you created in case 'b', don't truncate it... randomize again 10000 positions and act as before. You're slow again and again, but the time is reduced to... 45"!! Maybe, trying again, the time will reduce. I actually wonder why... Any Idea? The following is part of the code I used to test what I told in previuos cases (you'll have to change someting in order to have a clean compilation, I just cut & paste from some source code, sorry). The sample can read and write, in random, ordered or reverse ordered mode, but write only in random order is the clearest test. We tryed using std::fstream but also using directly CreateFile(), WriteFile() and so on the results are the same (even if std::fstream is actually a little slower). Parameters for case 'a' = -f_tempdir_\casea.dat -n10000 -t -p -w Parameters for case 'b' = -f_tempdir_\caseb.dat -n10000 -t -v -w Parameters for case 'b.1' = -f_tempdir_\caseb.dat -n10000 -t -w Parameters for case 'c' = -f_tempdir_\casea.dat -n10000 -w Parameters for case 'd' = -f_tempdir_\caseb.dat -n10000 -w Run the test (and even others) and see... // iotest.cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application. // #include <windows.h> #include <iostream> #include <set> #include <vector> #include "stdafx.h" double RealTime_Microsecs() { LARGE_INTEGER fr = {0, 0}; • What resources to look to in order to write an emulator for iPhoneOS?

    - by Roman Kagan
What are available resources I should look to in order to write an emulator for iPhoneOS? I'd like to write an emulator to run applications written for MacOS. I understand that I won't be able to use file system and other OS resources. I do have an SDK, XCode and all documentation for those resources, but I wonder if I can find some examples (perhaps similar to the emulator that can run Ninetendo games on iPhone)?

  • How would you write a program to find the shortest pangram in a list of words?

    - by jonathanasdf
Given a list of words which contains the letters a-z at least once, how would you write a program to find the shortest pangram counted by number of characters (not counting spaces) as a combination of the words? Since I am not sure whether short answers exist, this is not code golf, but rather just a discussion of how you would approach this. However, if you think you can manage to write a short program that would do this, then go ahead, and this might turn into code golf :)

  • How to read from database and write into text file with C#?

    - by user147685
How to read from database and write into text file? I want to write/copy (not sure what to call) the record inside my database into a text file. One row record in database is equal to one line in the text file. I'm having no problem in database. For creating text file, it mentions FileStream and StreamWriter. Which one should I use?

  • How to write a COM server in raw C?

    - by smwikipedia
I am studying COM. I think the best way to get a thorough understanding of COM is write one without any COM framework such as ATL. I have written a COM server in raw C++, and now I want to write one in plain raw C. How could I do this? Is there any tutorial? Many thanks.

  • [game] How to write ::: in cpp and ??? in c#?

    - by daveny
These questions are a kind of game, and I did not find the solution for them. It is possible to write ::: in Cpp without using "" or anything like this and the compiler will accept it. (macro-s are prohibited too) And the same is true for C# too, but in C#, you have to write ???. I think Cpp will use the :: scope operator and C# will use '? :' , but I do not know the answers to them. Any idea?

  • Is there a suitable replacement for C++, when I would like to write video processing applications?

    - by Nisanio
Hi I want to write a video editing software, and the "logical" conclusion is that the language I must to use is C++... But I don't like it (sorry c++ fans) I would like to write it with something cool, like Lisp or Haskell or Erlang... But I don't know if the open source implementation of those languages (I don't have money to buy licenses) let me made a competitive software (in the performance area) What do you think? what do you recommend?

  • Is it OK to write a constructor which does nothing?

    - by Roman
    To use methods of a class I need to instantiate a class. At the moment the class has not constructor (so I want to write it). But than I have realized that the constructor should do nothing (I do need to specify values of fields). In this context I have a question if it is OK to write constructor which does nothing. For example: public Point() { }
