  • How to set default date in date_select helper in Rails

    I'm trying to set up a date of birth helper in my Rails app (2.3.5). At present it is like so. <%= f.date_select :date_of_birth, :start_year => Time.now.year - 110, :end_year => Time.now.year %> This generates a perfectly functional set of date fields that work just fine but.... They default to today's date which is not ideal for a date of birth field (I'm not sure what is but unless you're running a neonatal unit today's date seems less than ideal). I want it to read Jan 1 2010 instead (or 2011 or whatever year it happens to be). Using the :default option has proven unsuccessful. I've tried many possibilities including; <%= f.date_select :date_of_birth, :default => {:year => Time.now.year, :month => 'Jan', :day => 1}, :start_year => Time.now.year - 110, :end_year => Time.now.year %> and <%= f.date_select :date_of_birth, :default => Time.local(2010,'Jan',1), :start_year => Time.now.year - 110, :end_year => Time.now.year %> None of this changes the behaviour of the first example. Does the default option actually work as described? It seems that this should be a fairly straightforward thing to do. Ta.

  • How to fine tune a Membership Provider?

    After all the answers to my last question about fine-tuning turned out to be more useful than I expected, I thought that I would ask another similar Question about the MembershipProviders as well. Okay, so firstly, to clarify: I know what a Membership, Role, and Profile provider is, how to implement my own, and how to configure them, and most of the things about them. Implementing a role and profile provider is pretty straightforward, because they only require simple CRUD most of the time. (A single line of LINQ is enough for about half of the RoleProvider's methods.) However, the Membership provider is a differend beast. Many of you may realize that it violates the SR (Single Responsibility) principle, because it has to do EVERYTHING related to user management. While this leaves a lot of room for customizations, it has its downsides as well. There is no information on the Internet about what their EXACT expected behaviour is, such as when should they throw exceptions or simply return null, and stuff like that. I use this sample implementation for reference, but it also contains several contradictions. For example, it uses its own ValidateUser method for checking for credentials in the ChangePassword method. But the ValidateUser also updates the user's LastLoginDate to the current date. So, does the framework expect that I set it in my own provider as well, or is it simply a mistake in the sample? The other is: the ChangePassword method throws an exception every time when validating the new password, but CreateUser doesn't ever throw an exception, it simply returns false. And last, but not least: it counts the invalid password attempts of the user and locks them if it passes a threshold. While this is good, but it requires manual action to unlock the users. Is it a problem if my provider automatically unlocks the user after a certain amount of time? (EDIT) I almost forgot: the CreateUser method in the sample inserts the ID from the method parameter. I actually think this is bad practice, because I use inters with auto incement as IDs, so inserting them from some method parameter is not an option. Should I just ignore the parameter, or require that its value is null and throw an exception if it isn't? All in all, does ASP.NET have any assumptions about the behaviour of a MembershipProvider? Is there any documentation which describes when should I throw an exception or just return null? I also tried to find a set of generic unit tests which would provide some guidance about the expected behaviour, but no luck, I found plenty of articles about "Unit testing is good", and "How to unit test a MembershipProvider", but not one where there would be any actual tests.   • Asp.net web forms, Asp Identity - how to store claims from Facebook, Twitter, etc

    This request is based upon the new Visual Studio 2013 integration of Asp.net Identity stuff. I have seen some of the posts regarding this question for MVC, but for the life of me cannot get it to work for standard Web Forms. What I'm trying to do is populate the AspNetUserClaims table from the claims that I get back from Facebook (or other service). I actually can see the values coming back in the OnAuthenticated below, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to add these claims to the context of the currently logged in user? There are literally hundreds of MVC examples surrounding this, but alas no Web Forms examples. This should be completely straightforward, but for some reason I cannot match up the context of the currently logged in user to the claims and credentials coming back from Facebook. Currently after the OnAuthenticated fires, it obviously returns me to the page (RegisterExternalLogin.aspx) as the built-in example provides. However, the claims are gone, the context of the login to Facebook is gone, and I can't do anything else at this point.     I would like to be able to time a page load time in ASP.net (VBscript). Adding Trace="true" to the page directive is nice, but I need to actually time an event and store it in a variable. In ASP it was easy with the Timer object, but in .net I can't find anything on Google.   • Human readable and parsable date format in Java.

    I want to save a Date object to a readable string (for example 22/10/2009 21:13:14) that is also parsable back to a Date object. I have tried many things and the best I could find was to use DateFormater for parsing and formating but it has a setback. When you format a date you lose seconds information. I tried to find if there is an option to format it and display the seconds (even better would be to the millisecond level since that's the resolution the Date object allows you to have) but I came up short. Any ideas?

    Hello, I'm wondering until when the .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 will be supported by Microsoft. According to Microsoft Support Lifetime page for developers products the mainstream support phase should last for 5 years and extended support phase for another 5 years. I've found a .NET Framework 2.0 entry in the Support Lifetime Index , however I was unable to find any entry for .NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5 there (or .NET 4.0). According to the .NET framework 2.0 entry mainstream support phase for .NET 2.0 will end at 4/12/2011. I have two questions: Considering that .NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5 depends on .NET 2.0 CLR does it means that mainstream support for .NET 3.x will also end in 4/12/2011? If it's not true what is the end of mainstream support for .NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5?

  • asp.net ajax toolkit combobox doesn't work in hidden div

    I have a combobox inside a hidden div which I use css display = none to make it invisible, but when I make the div visible by setting display = block, the combobox just show the input and its button and ul list all have css as display = 'none', visibility ='hidden'. I can tell it is done by combobox inbuild javascript because I tried to use javascript to set the css manually with no luck. It is a bug of combobox. Urgent help needed. I spent a week to solve this, and our team put a lot trust on the toolkit. Please help me on this, all javascript gurus, thanks. Below is the code to reproduce the bug.   • RegisterStartupScript not working after upgrading to framework 3.5

    I'm trying to upgrade an asp.net c# web project from framework 2.0 to 3.5. When I do this, the client side script that gets written using RegisterStartupScript isn't rendered on the client page. This works perfectly when I compile for 2.0, and for 3.0, but not when I compile for 3.5. Here is the code that isn't getting rendered: Page myPage = (Page)HttpContext.Current.Handler; ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(myPage, myPage.GetType(), "alertscript", "alert('test');", true); This is called from a class project, and not the web project itself, which is why I'm using the HttpContext.Current.Handler. There are no errors getting generated from the compiler, the CLR, and there are no client side JavaScript errors. If I do a search for the "alertscript" in my rendered page, the above code actually isn't there. Anyone have ideas as to what is going on? -Edit- This seems to be an issue when I'm trying to register the script from an external project. If I use the exact same code in a class file in the web project (not the code behind), it works. However, if I make a call to a method in a class from another project, it does not work. Does the ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript not get registered correctly if performed from somewhere besides the web project itself?

    I have an asp.net menu control which the child items(submenu) width is tied to its parent's width, I was wondering is there a work around? because some of the titles for the submenu are longer than the title of the parent so it looks all smooshed together and just horrible on the eyes.     y is it so hard to extract the date from the view via the params in a grails controller? i don't want to extract the date by hand like this: instance.dateX = parseDate(params["dateX_value"])//parseDate is from my helper class i just want to use instance.properties = params you know :) in the model the type is java.util.Date and in the params is all the information (dateX_month, dateX_day, ...) i searched on the net and found nothing on this :( i hoped that grails 1.3.0 could help but still the same thing. i can't and will not belief that extracting the date by hand is nessesary!

  • ASP .net MVC Invoking default controller and action vs Setting a startup page

    Hi, I am developing code on the sample ASP .net MVC template provided by VS2010. The first time I ran the code without adding anything, the index.aspx page was invoked which is expected. But for some reasons I added a login.aspx and then accidentally set that as a startup page. Now when I ran the application the default startup url look like http://localhost/Views/login.aspx. I am thinking this is not a valid MVC routing path and I get the requested resource cannot be found error. I am not sure how to revert this back and make sure the default ../home/index is invoked. Can any one throw some light on this? Also should I not set the startup page as we do in asp .net webforms?

    Hello All, Could someone please advise in the context of a ASP.Net application is a shared/static function common to all users? If for example you have a function Public shared function GetStockByID(StockID as Guid) as Stock Is that function common to all current users of your application? Or is the shared function only specific to the current user and shared in the context of ONLY that current user? So more specifically my question is this, besides database concurrency issues such as table locking do I need to concern myself with threading issues in shared functions in an ASP.Net application? In my head; let’s say my application namespace is MyTestApplicationNamespace. Everytime a new user connects to my site a new instance of the MyTestApplicationNamespace is created and therefore all shared functions are common to that instance and user but NOT common across multiple users. Is this correct?

  • Core Data data type for just the date - not including time

    I am new at Core Data, and it seems like it is a great way to manage the data store. However I am also very memory-conscious due to the fact that the iPhone doesn't have that much of it. I was a little surprised to see that the data types are so limited - eg. there is a Date type which includes also the time, but no Date type for just the date! All the time information takes up precious bytes of memory, if I just wanted an attribute with the date (e.g. 2/15/2010 rather than 2/15/2010 02:34:48), how could I do this? Is it possible?

    I've used boost::gregorian::date a bit now. I can see that there are the related months & years & weeks duration types. I can see how to use known durations to advance a given date. Qu: But how can I get the difference between two dates in months (or years or weeks) ? I was hoping to find a function like: template<typename DURATION> DURATION date_diff<DURATION>(const date& d1,const date& d2); There would need to be some handling of rounding too.

Most of the formats in the variable are shown above- there are a couple of very rare others too. The reason why there are multiple formats is that the data were pulled together from various websites that each used different formats. I have tried using straightforward conversions e.g. strftime(mydf$date,"%d/%m/%Y") but these sorts of conversion will not work if there are multiple formats. I don't want to resort to multiple gsub type editing. I was wondering if I am missing a more simple solution?
