  • How to avoid user keep trying login using Ruby on Rails?

    I want to create a login page, it can easy implement using Ruby on Rails. But the login is very simple, but I want more security. I want to stop the user keep trying the password. So, I have some ideas on that. First, stop login feature if the user keep trying the password for 15 mins. After the user login fail 5 times in 15 mins, the system should not allow the user login again in next 15 mins, ever his/her password is correct. Second, I want to add a human verification, after the user tried 5 times. After the user wait for 15 mins to login, I want to add an addition verification to the user. I want the user click the password, and the CAPTCHA image. If one of them is failed, they still can't login the system. He/She have 5 times to try, if he / she failed again, he/she need to want another 15 mins. Third, After the user tried 15 times, and still can't get into the system. I want to lock the user account, the user will receive an email, with a link to assign the password again. So, the question is "Is there any library to implement such authorization easily?" I know it can be implemented using code, but using library is much convenient. Also, I want to ask is there any security suggestion for that? thank u.

  • Can someone please clarify my understanding of a mock's Verify concept?

    Hi folks, I'm playing around with some unit tests and mocking. I'm trying to verify that some code, in my method, has been called. I don't think I understand the Verify part of mocking right, because I can only ever Verify main method .. which is silly because that is what I Act upon anyways. I'm trying to test that my logic is working - so I thought I use Verify to see that certain steps in the method have been reached and enacted upon. Lets use this example to highlight what I am doing wrong. public interface IAuthenticationService { bool Authenticate(string username, string password); SignOut(); } public class FormsAuthenticationService : IAuthenticationService { public bool Authenticate(string username, string password) { var user = _userService.FindSingle(x => x.UserName == username); if (user == null) return false; // Hash their password. var hashedPassword = EncodePassword(password, user.PasswordSalt); if (!hashedPassword.Equals(password, StringComparison.InvariantCulture)) return false; FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(userName, true); return true; } } So now, I wish to verify that EncodePassword was called. FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(..) was called. Now, I don't care about the implimentations of both of those. And more importantly, I do not want to test those methods. That has to be handled elsewhere. What I though I should do is Verify that those methods were called and .. if possible ... an expected result was returned. Is this the correct understanding of what 'Verify' means with mocking? If so, can someone show me how I can do this. Preferable with moq but i'm happy with anything. Cheers :)

    Hi, It has been decided to write some unit tests using moq etc..It's lots of legacy code c# (this is beyond my control so cannot answer the whys of this) Now how do you cope with a scenario when you dont want to hit the database but you indirectly still hit the database?   • Secure Copy File from remote server via scp and os module in Python

    I'm pretty new to Python and programming. I'm trying to copy a file between two computers via a python script. However the code os.system("ssh " + hostname + " scp " + filepath + " " + user + "@" + localhost + ":" cwd) won't work. I think it needs a password, as descriped in How do I copy a file to a remote server in python using scp or ssh?. I didn't get any error logs, the file just won't show in my current working directory. However every other command with os.system("ssh " + hostname + "command") or os.popen("ssh " + hostname + "command") does work. - command = e.g. ls When I try ssh hostname scp file user@local:directory in the commandline it works without entering a password. I tried to combine os.popen commands with getpass and pxssh module to establish a ssh connection to the remote server and use it to send commands directly (I only tested it for an easy command): import pxssh import getpass ssh = pxssh.pxssh() ssh.force_password = True hostname = raw_input("Hostname: ") user = raw_input("Username: ") password = getpass.getpass("Password: ") ssh.login(hostname, user, password) test = os.popen("hostname") print test But I'm not able to put commands through to the remote server (print test shows, that hostname = local and not the remote server), however I'm sure, the conection is established. I thought it would be easier to establish a connection than always use "ssh " + hostname in the bash commands.     I want to learn the whole details of web application authentication. So, I decided to write a CodeIgniter authentication library from scratch. Now, I have to make design decision about how to determine whether one user is login. Basically, after user input username & password pair. A cookie is set for this session, following navigations in the web application will not require username & password. The server side will check whether the session cookie is valid to determine whether current user is login. The question is: how to determine whether cookie is valid cookie issued from server side? I can image the most simple way is to have the cookie value stored in session status as well. For each HTTP request, compare the value from cookie and the value from server session. (Since CodeIgniter session library store session variables in cookies, it is not applicable without some tweak.) This method requires storage in server side. For huge web application that is deployed in multiple datacenters. It is possible that user input username & password when browsing in one datacenter, while he/she access the web application in another datacenter later. The expected behavior is that user just input username & password once. As a result, all datacenters should be able to access the session status. That is possible not applicable even the session status is stored in external storage such as database. I tried Google. I login Google with Asian proxy which is supposed to direct me to datacenters in Asian. Then I switch to North American proxy which should direct me to datacenters in North America. It recognize my login without asking username and password again. So, is there any way to determine whether user is login without server side session status?

When we try to deploy to a remote environment we have a problem. We use a two machine cluster, with the admin server and managed server on one machine, and another managed server on a seperate machine. When your plugin uploads the application to the admin server, it doesn't copy it to the second managed server on the seperate machine. This then causes the second managed server a problem, as it cannot find the application in the location where the admin server saved it on its own machine. I discovered most people simply increment a digit at the end of their password, so "thisismypassword1" becomes "thisismypassword2" then 3, 4, 5 etc. Since all of these passwords are stored somewhere, I wondered if there was any weakness in the hashes themselves, for standard hashing algorithms used to store passwords like MD5. Could a hacker increase their chances of brute-forcing the password if they have a list of hashes of similar passwords?

    I want to create a hgrc file to set the username and password for all paths on some machine, e.g no matter in which directory I am in, hg clone some_path will always work without prompting for a username and a password (this is for an auto-deploy script). I followed the instructions and created a file: /etc/mercurial/hgrc.d/deploy.rc it's contents: [auth] default.prefix= http://myrepo default.username = myuname default.password = pwd But when I do hg clone some_path I get abort: error: Connection refused. What Am i doing wrong?

  • Problems with Ruby "||" "or"?

    Beginning Ruby Question: I'm trying to see if a string variable's contents is either "personal" "email" or "password". I'm trying: if params[:action] == "password" || "email" || "personal" foo else don't foo end But that doesn't work and returns strange results, and using IRB to play around with "or" statements I have no idea why the following happens: irb(main):040:0> a = "email" => "email" irb(main):041:0> a == "password" || "email" => "email" irb(main):042:0> a == "email" || "password" => true I just want something that if any of the 3 variables are true no matter what order they are in it returns true, if not it returns false. Anyone want to help this n00b out?
