• Can I have a macro in Visual Studio 2005 call a DOS command and redirect the output to a file?

  I'd like to have a macro in Visual Studio 2005 that calls a DOS command and redirects the output (stdout and stderr) to a file. Just calling the command and "" redirecting it will not capture stderr, so there are two parts to this: calling a DOS command capturing both stderr and stdout to a file during that call I'd then like to open this file in Visual Studio after the command completes. I'm new to Visual Studio 2005 macro writing, and VB/VBA, so that's the kind of help that I'm looking for. Thanks, Mark

• How to work with XAML editor in Visual Studio 2010?

  I've worked with Visual Studio 2008 and editing XAML was really painful because the designer reloaded very slowly. Now I have installed Visual Studio 2010 and it seems to me that the XAML editor + Designer haven't changed much. For example in order to force designer to change a color in my control I have to close the xaml file and open it again. Is it just my problem? I've tried this solution: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/859335/visual-studio-2008-xaml-editor-not-working-disappeared but it didn't help. Are there any better tools for Visual Studio to edit XAML? Thanks!

  In Visual Studio 2010 sometimes when I want to get the value of a variable while debugging, it tells me that it "does not exist in this context" when it obviously does. I have found that if I use the variable, as in the screenshot below, then it is able to show it. Has anyone experienced this? Visual Studio 2008 never did this. How can I get Visual Studio 2010 to always show me variable values while debugging?

  Coming from Eclipse/Java, I noticed that in VisualStudio/C# it is not mandatory to care about Exceptions. While Eclipse forces the user to implement a try-catch-block or to add a throws declaration, this is not the case in Visual Studio. What is the reason Visual Studio doesn't inform about unhandled exceptions? Can I configure Visual Studio to force me to implement try-catch-blocks, or at least add a compiler-warning?

  In Visual Studio 2008, if I had a solution containing multiple C++ projects, I could make them depend on each-other and correctly link by using the "Project Dependencies" option. This fixed up the build order and also made (e.g.) the main application project link against the static library outputs. In Visual Studio 2010, this doesn't seem to work. Did Visual Studio 2010 change the way this works?

I want to start using Visual Studio 2010, but the .NET Framework 4.0 isn't very well supported by web hosting companies just yet. It seems to make sense to stick with the .NET Framework 3.5 for now. If I open my projects in Visual Studio 2010 and leave them targeted at the .NET Framework 3.5, am I going to have problems?

  I have a small thing. public int GetSum(List<int> x) { foreach (int i in x) sum += i; return sum; } where x is a List of integers defined as List<int> l = new List<int>(); l.Add(4); l.Add(2); l.Add(5); l.Add(8); l.Add(6); and has been passed as GetSum(l) Is it possible to rewrite the above foreach loop using a lambda?   I have an XNA 3.0 project that compiled just fine in VS2008, but that gives compile errors in VS2010 (with XNA 4.0 CTP). The error: Cannot use fixed local 'depthPtr' inside an anonymous method, lambda expression, or query expression depthPtr is a fixed float* into an array, that is used inside a Parallel.For lambda expression from System.Threading. As I said, this compiled and ran just fine on VS2008, but it does not on VS2010, even when targeting .NET 3.5. Has this changed in .NET 4.0, and even so, shouldn't it still compile when I choose .NET 3.5 as the target framework? Searching for the term "Cannot use fixed local" yields exactly one (useless) result, both in Google and Bing. If this has changed, what is the reason for this? I can imagine capturing a fixed pointer-type in a closure could get a bit weird, is that why? So I'm guessing this is bad practice? And before anyone asks: no, the use of pointers is not absolutely critical here. I would still like to know though :)

• Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 1.2 (June 2010)

  I have good news! Microsoft has released the June 2010 Windows Azure Tools + SDK. These new tools extend Visual Studio (both VS 2010 & VS 2008) for Windows Azure development. With these tools you can create, configure, debug, build, run, and deploy scalable web apps on Windows Azure. At first glance what I see as some of the most interesting points of interest are the fact that Visual Studio 2010 RTM is fully supported as well as .NET 4 support. You can choose to build your apps with the .NET 3.5 or .NET 4 frameworks. Another area of interest that I’ll be digging into is the cloud storage explorer. It provides a read-only view of your Windows Azure tables and blob containers from within Visual Studio via the Server Explorer. I’m sure I’ll have more to say about the Windows Azure Tools as I dig deeper… Have a day. :-|
