If I have valvo that obtain from database, How can I set volvo option status into active(checked) by using JQuery?

<select name="car">
      <option value="volvo">Volvo</option>
      <option value="saab">Saab</option>
      <option value="mercedes">Mercedes</option>
      <option value="audi">Audi</option>
</select>

I don't know how to manager control that have same identity.
??? $('input[name="car"]').attr('checked', true);
