Why Can't I Connect To ODBC SQL Data Source In XPMode Virtual Machine?

I have a new Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine. I have set up an XPMode Virtual Machine and installed SQL 2008.

I am now trying to successfully create an ODBC data source linking to the SQL 2008 installation. I can go through the wizard but 'Test Connection' fails.

SQL Server is shared and available to all users.
