How to install software on Amazon EC2 Windows instance?

I've never used Amazon EC2 - I am thinking to test a few instances for running intensive computation processes I have a requirement for rather than buying real hardware.

I am given to understand the thing is quite easy to setup - but I have no clue of how it actually works.

Can I upload disc images and install just any software as on any other virtual machine or is there any significant difference?

Any help appreciated!
