On an HTC Hero - with provider Orange in the UK - can one upgrade the OS?

Currently it's running Android 1.5 - I'd clearly prefer to be on 1.6, 2.0 or 2.1 - but there seems to be limited information on this available on the internet.

If anyone can confirm whether it's been done before, what versions are compatible with the handset, and any problems, it'd be really useful.

Aside - it's kind of poor that a phone sold in March 2010 only runs Android 1.5... :(
