Setting page parent to a private page in Wordpress 2.8

I have a site developed in Wordpress 2.7 that makes extensive use of private pages as the parents of public pages. The private pages are never meant to be seen, they are just there to act as containers for the other pages.

Since upgrading to Wordpress 2.8, it seems this isn't possible any more.

Private pages no long show up in the drop box of pages I can use as a parent, and if I edit a page with a private parent, it loses the parenting information.

Is there anything I can do about this?
