Why can't my master page be loaded

I've largely ignored this error, but i can do so no more.

I'm trying to view a page that inherits from a master page in my solution, but I see this: "The Master Page file 'Site.master' cannot be loaded." The page exists, I can browse to it, view it in design view and do stuff. When the site is loaded in the browser, it works fine.

Any ideas?
