Low noise sites to keep track of news related to computers & programming?

I am aware of sites like Slashdot and Ars Technica. Unfortunately they publish way too many articles per day.
- Ars Technical: 100 posts per week
- Slashdot: 179 posts per week
And I prefer not to waste my attention over reading about 180 posts (even if I were to skim) every week.
Is there a site that provides only important news - excluding not-so-important news items like top 6 iPad apps that someone is dying to try out (but haven't done yet; still thinks their readers/advertisers care about it)?
