Hello everyone
I have a hard disk with bad sectors on it. I want to partition the drive so that the partitions are in the good part of the hard disk, and the parts that have bad sectors are not used.
The first ~20GB of the hard disk are good. Then comes a ~13GB part that is riddled with bad sectors…

I have a HP Pavilion dv6446 notebook. It had Windows Vista Home premium. After 4.5+ years of usage, just recently it started malfunctioning. While working fine, its screen goes white or sometimes some thin black lines horizontally. Laptop freezes. Hard reboot works.

A few nights ago I have created a backup of my data on an external 500 GB NTFS USB hard drive.
I have then formatted my computer, reinstalled Ubuntu and started transferring back the data from the external HDD.
Unfortunately some files have became corrupted and Ubuntu is unable to copy them over…

Attempting to wipe the drive of a laptop that I have before it's sold, and normally use DBAN to do so. However this time it starts and then finishes instantly with the following message.
"DBAN finished with non-fatal errors
This is usually cause by disks with bad sectors"

I run check disk pretty regularly on my hard drive, and lately it's been saying that I have some bad sectores (66, to be exact). I've run smartctl and HD Tune. Both tell me that I have bad sectors and the drive is in "pre-fail" stage. The drive is only a couple of years old. How worried should I be…
