Windows recording in Vista

I want to record the sound that's coming from my applications in Windows Vista. The problem seems to be that Vista seems to only recognize the microphone as input device. Is there any reason for this? I went to Control Panel > Sound and I can only see the microphone as recording device.

Im using a TX2000 HP laptop.
