unable to upgrade VMWare tools in Ubuntu 8.10

I'm having a rather odd issue with a VMWare Tools upgrade on Ubuntu 8.10. As the screenshot below demonstrates, it wants to remove the old version before installing the new version (ok, not a problem). When it attempts to do so, however, it tells me that it can't uninstall the previous version, because there isn't one (there is! problem!).

WTF?

Has anyone encountered this? Googling didn't turn up much.
