What determines your version numbering conventions in your s/w releases ?

I use the classic vX.x format. Beta testing gets a version number like v0.5b. When I go live, I'll say v1.0.

I have seen the X.X.X format.

Can someone explain the principles behind that convention please.

What rules do you use that determine the version of your applications ?

And which one do you prefer ?
