Why does IE store dialog-box-passwords persistently but Firefox doesn’t and how do you delete them?

If you authenticate on a site using the popup dialog style of login in IE, even if you have the highest level of privacy set in IE, the passwords persist from one session to the next.

This does not seem to be true in Firefox.

Is there a way to delete those passwords in IE?
