Why do people like widescreen when it is, de facto, less space?

I find that many of my friends/non-programmers or designers like widescreens. It makes very little sense to me as you in fact have less space than a 4:3 (do the math). The closer to a perfect square the more space you actually have on your screen.

I got a 21" 16:9 and two 19" 4:3

The 21" is nearly the same height, but I think its a tenth of an inch shorter if I'm correct. I forget the calculation but it is nearly the same actual space.

I can understand if you're using your computer for constant movie-watching but I think that's more of people's "ideal" than a reality.

Thoughts?
