Cannot connect via OpenSSH and FTP to my ubuntu server

Hello I have installed a webserver (ubuntu server 10.04) and it is connected to the internet. I can tell because the apache server apparently is working. But i can't get SSH or FTP to work.

When I try to login from my laptop (SSH user@my-ip) ,SSH asks for my password, and when i give it, it does nothing! Also when I give the wrong password, it tells me that the password is incorrect.

I'm also receiving an error while trying to connect by FTP.
