Log & monitor mysql databases on servers

How MySQL databases logged and monitored on ubuntu servers in real time?. I checked /var/log/mysql.log and found it empty.

EDIT 1:

The log was not enabled in the mysql configuration file. Now it logs and I could see the logs in the file /var/log/mysql/mysql.log

But this could not be sufficient to gather additional information about the database logs. Is there any other way or any popular open source tool?
