SEO Pros and cons of having your blog in a subdirectory or subdomain

From an SEO point of view is it better to have your blog running as part of your site (ie. /blog) so that it will be generating more content for the site

OR

is it better to have it running as a subdomain (ie. blog.) of your main site (correct me if im wrong but google sees subdomains as seperate site ?) so that it would be getting lots of external links from my blog, but then again, it would be generating no extra content for my main site.
