I was trying to install p7zip for extracting 7z files in Ubuntu 11.04

on typing sudo apt-get install p7zip , i received the following error message

Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList >/var/lib/apt/lists/extras.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-amd64_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

What could be the problem? My update manager is also not working
