WIFI connection stopped working on Windows - how to troubleshoot

Friends and family often come to me with this problem, and while I usually manage to fix their problems eventually, it often take me several hours. I'm sure there are many of us in the same position.

Also, friends rarely seem to know which provider they're using, or what the password is of their WIFI-connection or ADSL-router. I'd like to gather that information myself.

I'd like to have a checklist to diagnose and fix the problem, and a set of utilities on an usb-stick to help me. Where to start?
