Cannot connect to postgresql on port 5432

postgresql-8.4
I installed the Bitnami Django stack which included PostgreSQL 8.4.
When I run psql -U postgres
I get the following error:
psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
PG is definitely running and the pg_hba.conf
file looks like this:
# TYPE DATABASE USER CIDR-ADDRESS METHOD
# "local" is for Unix domain socket connections only
local all all md5
# IPv4 local connections:
host all all 127.0.0.1/32 md5
# IPv6 local connections:
host all all ::1/128 md5
What gives?
"Proof" that pg is running:
