sudo fdisk -l lists the drive, however, I cannot find it in the file explorer.

Manually mounting it produces this error message
:~$ sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/external -ouiduid=1000,gid=1000,utf8,dmask=027,fmask=137
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Is the usb toast?
