How to get started with programming

I have never programmed before. In the 5th grade, I did write very elementary programs using BASIC and that was 7 year back.

I wish to learn how to program and I was wondering if someone could please suggest how to get started. For example, I do not know enough to form a judgement on what language should be appropriate to get started.

What programming language would you suggest to get started with programming? What are the resources to learn the language you recommend.
