Can the authentication box appear earlier after startup?

I'd expected the authentication "Enter your password" box to appear and need to be answered before any applications would run after startup - rather like Windows demands a password first - but it seems to be quite an unrushed process. CAN it be persuaded to get going more briskly ? (I'm usually about to respond to a new email before it interrupts me after starting Linux from scratch :)

(I'm quite new to Linux: I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS)
