send mail via smtp on debian 6?

i followed this tutorial http://library.linode.com/email/exim/send-only-mta-debian-6-squeeze?format=print

When i got to the end, i sent the email to [email protected]. I didnt receive it. I didnt get spam either, i got nothing. I also didnt get an error message on the console. How do i properly sent up a smtp server and send an email from it?

I'll not i am testing this on my VM on my local computer. My ISP doesnt block any traffic whatsoever (which is one reason why i use them) so... what can i do?
