How to troubleshoot memory card read?

The built in memory card reader in my laptop mounts SD cards as read-only only. This happens both in Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Most of the time. Ever now an then it works.

After a some non-deterministic combination of uninstalling/reinstalling/disabling/enabling of the driver with the mandatory reboots the card reader works for a while.

Is there any sane way to troubleshoot if it's an actual hardware problem, or just a matter of drivers?

I've tested it with several SD cards, that work just fine in other devices.

System:

Acer Aspire 8951G, Windows 7-64bit
