How can I get Xubuntu's workspace switcher to show the proper sized desktop?

I recently installed the Xubuntu desktop over my Ubuntu 12.04 installation, and have been customizing it to my liking. My laptop comes to class with me, and when it's not out of the room, it's usually connected to a second monitor. When I am not connected to the monitor, the workspace switcher shows that my windows are all inside about half of each workspace, but there's only one monitor connected. I'm looking for a way to get it to show workspaces that are reminiscent of this monitor's size and nothing more. Is there a way to fix that?

I can attach a picture of the problem if necessary.
