NVidia raid 5 array spooling sounds and delay

I've had a raid 5 array setup with 3 2TB WD Green drives for about 3 years now.

Starting last week, when I would access the array for the first time, I hear a loud drive spooling sound and experience a ~5 second delay before being able to access\save files.

This behavior happens when I don't use the array for some time (about an hour) and after occurring it doesn't happen again if I continue to access the array.

I've run SMART scans on all drives and they come back as being a-ok.

What's causing this? Is my array getting close to death?
