  • How to make 7zip faster

    I normally use winRAR over 7Zip simply because its faster and only a little less efficient with compression. I did a few tests on different filetypes and sizes comparing the 7zip and winRAR default settings on their normal compression and their best compression, and in a lot of cases winRAR was 50% faster and in some it was actually 100% faster. But, I do like FOSS more. So here are my questions: Is there a way to make 7zip speed up? I'd like it to at least be on par with rar's speed Is there a way to make recovery segments in 7zip like you can in rar? I didn't see any, but I guess it could be a command line thing. I tested winrar and 7zip using the latest stable version of each (4.something with 7zip). Is the 9.x beta release noticeably faster at compression? I'm talking about faster at a comparable setting in WinRAR, not just lowering to bare minimum compression. If it matters, I use a quad core intel i7 720 (1.6ghz)/(2.8ghz) with 4gb DDR3 ram, and the 64-bit version of 7zip.

  • Symbolic links and 7zip

    I'm trying to compress a folder into a .7z archive. This folder contains symbolic links to some other stuff outside the folder (both directories and files). Apparently 7zip just archives the link it's self which is not what I intended. Is there a way to tell 7zip that I want it to archive the stuff that it links too, not the link its self (so if there is a symlink name "foo" which points to "C:\stuff\foo" I want it to include the "C:\stuff\foo" stuff in the archive in place of foo, not a "0 byte" symlink... Failing that is there any reasonable around it, apart from adding the files and folders in question? Including the stuff through the symlink there's like 10 000 files, the large proportion of which are via symlinks so adding them all individually would take hours... I'm thinking mayby a program that creates a staging folder with the real files in it then passes that to 7zip, or just an archiver that does handle them better?

  • Installed 7zip. Not working. And when removing, it says to remove Fileroller as well

    I installed 7zip today from software centre but it won't showed up in launch bar (side bar). I did a lot but failed to open 7zip "window" from any where. I clicked it in dash but then I was sent to software center showing that it is installed. I just don't know how to start it. Nor it is showing in right-click menu. I actually wanted to open flareget which is in .tar.gz. Ubuntu's default archive opener isn't opening it and showing me this: And if I try to remove 7zip, it's saying file-roller should also be removed: What's going on and what's solution?

    Hello, I downloaded 7za.exe and did this to compress a file.exe: 7za.rar a -mx9 archive file.exe Now I want to create a selfextracting archive (.exe), so I tried this: 7za.rar a -mx9 -sfx archive file.exe But I get the following error message: can't find specified sfx module Can anyone please tell me how to make a selfextracting .exe with 7zip via cmd.exe?     I have 7z 4.65 and am trying to extract a single file to standard output. The 7z command-line help says -so is the command-line parameter to extract to standard output, but when I try this: >>> 7z e -so dist\dlogpkg.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF 7-Zip 4.65 Copyright (c) 1999-2009 Igor Pavlov 2009-02-03 Error: I won't write data and program's messages to same terminal how can I fix this? There doesn't seem to be a command line param to suppress the normal 7z stdout messages. (edit: the equivalent operation in "unzip" would be unzip -p dist\dlogpkg.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF which works fine. But I'd like to use 7z for various reasons.)

The files are in a directory structure, like this: MyDir\File1 MyDir\File2 MyDir\File3 MyDir\MoreFiles\File4 MyDir\MoreFiles\File5 I want to create a 7z file with the following structure via command line: ZippedDir\File1 ZippedDir\File2 ZippedDir\File3 ZippedDir\MoreFiles\File4 ZippedDir\MoreFiles\File5 Basically, I want to zip the content of MyDir\ into a new folder called ZippedDir\. I know I could copy the content into a directory called ZippedDir\ and then zip this new directory. However, I was wondering if there was a way to avoid this extra copy step and directly zip the content, if possible, via command line.

    Currently, I am making a SFX with 7zip using the following config: ;!@Install@!UTF-8! InstallPath="C:\\test" GUIMode="2" RunProgram="7z465.exe" ;!@InstallEnd@! Which is used in: copy /b "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7zSD.sfx" + config.txt + ".\Release\Setup.7z" .\Release\Setup.exe When I run the resulting Setup.exe, It extracts fine and launches the 7z465.exe as well, but it is still extracting to some 7zip temp folder for the current user! Anyone have any idea why?

  • 7zip many files from different folders?

    I would like to add a large number of files with different names from different folders to a single 7zip archive using 7za.exe. This should be simple, but it turned out to be a major pain. I created a file that contains the paths (7za -a @list.txt) but once there are too many (~100) files, it fails. Apparently the content of the argument file is pushed onto the command line buffer, which is far too small (the number of files to add is 1m). Splitting the process up by adding the files one by one is not feasible due to the way 7za works: When adding the next file, it creates a copy of the archive, adds the file to the copy and finally replaces the original. This is terribly slow once the archive gets to a couple 100MB in size. So far I am using a combination of the two approaches by adding a dozen files each time in a loop, but it is an unreliable hack and still very slow. Is there a better way to do it? I tried to use 7zip wrapper DLLs (I'm a C# programmer), but none of them worked reliably and I was repeatedly suggested to just use 7za instead.

    I recently wanted to try out Fedora. So I transfered all my files to it via USB. Then I got frustrated with it, placed all my files in a 7z archive and then copied them back to the drive.     Things like this, my friend send me a package named qcon.zip with his Mac pc. I use ubuntu system,when I use the command to unzip the folder,I found something was wrong.I check the permission,and use another soft named 7z,but it can't work now. when i use the command unzip qcon.zip unzip qcon.zip -d test/ it returns me that: unzip: cannot find or open ”-O, ”-O.zip or ”-O.ZIP. So after install 7z,the command I use , Error: qcon.zip: Can not open file as archive --add the command file--- file qcon.zip it returns qcon.zip: Zip archive data, at least v1.0 to extract So,what can I do now,the folder permission is right.

    I've been Googleing for a few hours on how to just compress a file inside a directory and I can't find anything. I found how to just compress a folder in general. Now I wish to know how I can compress a folder in a folder with a file. Current code: 7zG.exe a -tzip "test.zip" dontcompressme/compressme/new.txt pause As you can see above, I don't want to compress the first folder, but only the second and what ever is within that folder. I have the 7zG.exe sitting in the main folder and I have some files that are three folders in, but I don't know how to only compress those. Here is my directory list: Folder One (don't compress) Folder Two (don't compress) Folder Three (okay to compress) Document One.txt (okay to compress) Document Two.txt (okay to compress) Index.html (okay to compress) Does anyone know how I can do this in the most simplest way ever invented by man? Cause whenever I go to a website using Google it goes throw all these methods on how to compress a folder, but not do it the way I wish it to do. It makes me kinda upset cause I can't get a simple and straight forward answer. Thank you if you answer my question.

    I've used WinZip, WinRar, and 7zip for packaging and compression. I know the first two are payware, and the last is open source. Despite that, they all seem to serve the same overall purpose. Are there any other distinguishing characteristics that make any of the options stand out? I'm not really looking for a "best" package, but would like to know of noteworthy differences between the common tools. For what it's worth, I do seem to like WinRar. Not sure why, but there it is. If it matters, I'm using Windows 7.

For some reason a couple of bytes are different A7 and A8 values for directories 2010_05_07 and 2010_05_8 respectively. How to achieve identical results and out of curiosity what causes this problem.
