• Permissions restoring from Time Machine - Finder copy vs "cp" copy

  Note: this question was starting to sprawl so I rewrote it. I have a folder that I'm trying to restore from a Time Machine backup. Using cp -R works fine, but certain folders cannot be restored with either the Time Machine UI or Finder. Other users have reported similar errors and the cp -R workaround was suggested (e.g. Restoring from Time Machine - Permissions Error). But I wanted to understand: Why cp -R works when the Finder and the Time Machine UI do not. Whether I could prevent the errors by changing file permissions before the backup. There do indeed seem to be some permissions that Finder works with and some that it does not. I've narrowed the errors down to folders with the user ben (that's me) and the group wheel. Here's a simplified reproduction. But ben-wheel does not prompt for my password and gives the error: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “file”. Interestingly, I can restore the file from this folder by dragging it directly to my local drive (instead of dragging its parent folder), but when I do so its permissions are changed to ben/staff. • Book Review: Getting Started With Window 8 Apps By Ben Dewey

  When O’Reilly gave me an opportunity to review this book I was excited.  It gave me a reason to finally put some time into this new platform and what developers will need to learn in order to be successful. This book by Ben Dewey is only 92 pages long, so if you were looking for an in-depth treatment of Windows 8 development you will need supplemental materials.  It is also due for an update from the perspective of recent changes made by Microsoft prior to the final release of the OS and tools.  This causes a few issues if you try to run the code samples because of namespace changes. I was encouraged by the fact that the author didn’t do the typical “hello world” app.  He uses a lot of pattern based development techniques and hits many of the main topics including: Application lifecycle Charms integration Tiles Sensors The lifecycle is critical for anyone who hasn’t done mobile development before.  Limited resources on these devices mean that the OS can suspend or kill your app altogether if it decides it needs to.  He covers tombstoning which is the key to Windows 8 and Windows Phone lifecycle management. He also dedicates a chapter to marketing and distributing the application you build.  From my experience with Windows Phone development this is crucial information.  You need to know how to test your application so that it is going to pass certification and present your app so that it is going to get noticed amongst thousands of other apps. The main things that I wish had been in the book explanations of more of the common controls and more complete explanation of patterns that were implemented. In the end this book is a good foundation getting exposure to the concepts that underlie this new version of the Windows platform and how it effects developers.  It isn’t a book that I would suggest for someone just getting into development with no understanding of pattern based development. del.icio.us Tags: Windows 8,O'Reilly,Ben Dewey,Book Review,Review

So when someone browse domain.com/robots.txt then a different file is shown. And when someone go to test.domain.com/robots.txt then a different file is shown. • Setting different default applications for different Desktop Environment

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with default Unity interface. I installed later the KDE desktop, XFCE, LXDE, gnome-shell and Cinnamon. The KDE comes with different default applications than Unity, such as kwrite for text editing, konsole as virtual terminal, kfontview for font viewing and installing, dolphin as File browser etc. Other DE come with some other default applications. The problem arises when you want to open a file such as a text file, with which can both be opened by gedit and kwrite, I want to use kwrite on KDE and gedit on Unity or Gnome. But, there is no way to set like this. I can set default application for text file by changing respective settings in both KDE and Unity, but It become default for both DE. For example, If I set kfontviewer as default font viewing application in KDE, it also opens fonts when I am in Unity or Gnome and vice versa. This is a problem because, loading other DE's program takes long time than the default one for the used DE. My question is: Can I use different default applications for different DE? How?

• Designing a system with different business rules for different customers

  My company is rewriting our proprietary business application. The current architecture is poorly done and inflexible. It is coded more procedural oriented as opposed to object oriented. It has become difficult to maintain. Our system is a web application written in .Net Webforms. I am considering ASP.Net MVC for the rewrite. We intend to rewrite it with a good, solid architecture with the goal of maintainability and reusable classes for some of our other systems and services. We would also like the system to be customizable for different customers in the event that we market the system. I am considering redesigning the system based on the layered architecture (Presentation, Business, Data Access layers) described in the Microsoft Patterns and Practices Application Architecture Guide. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff650706.aspx Hopefully this isn't too open ended, but how would you recommend allowing for different business logic/rules for different customers? I'm aware of Windows Workflow Foundation, but from what I've read about it, it seems many business rules could be too complicated to handle there. Also, Can anyone point me to where I can download an example of a .net solution that is based on the Application Architecture Guide? I have already downloaded the Layered Architecture Solution Guidance and the Expense Sample on codeplex. I was looking for something a bit larger and more robust that I could step through the code and see how it works. If you feel there are better architectures to base our redesign on please feel free to share. I appreciate your help!

• MVC shared model different required fields on different type

  I have a model called Car and depending on what type of Car the user select the view is presented differently. For example the user selects from a grid of different cars and depending if it is a Volvo or a Kia or a Ford the view must allow different fields to be editable. For example with a Volvo the color is editable and is mandatory but with a Kia it is not. I would like to use the one Car class to bind the view but want the client side validation to pick up the required fields based on what type of car. I want to go only to one Action method for the Update what is a good way to approach this problem...? create a base class and inherit from it? will this give me binding problems..?

• Letting search engines know that different links to identical pages stress different parts of the page

  When you follow a permalink to a chat message in the Stack Exchange chat, you get a view of the transcript page for the day that contains the particular message. This message is highlighted in yellow, and the page is scrolled to its position. Sometimes – admittedly rarely, but it happens – a web search will result in such a transcript link. Here's a (constructed, obviously) example: A Google search for strange behavior of the \bibliography command site:chat.stackexchange.com gives me a link to this chat message. This message is obiously unrelated to my query, but the transcript page does indeed contain my search terms – just in a totally different spot. Both the above links lead to the same content, and Google knows this, since both pages have <link rel="canonical" href="/transcript/41/2012/4/9/0-24" /> in their <head>. The only difference between the two links is Which message has the highlight css class?. Is there a way to let Google know that while all three links have the same content, they put an emphasis on a different part of the content? Note that the permalinks on the transcript page already have a #12345 hash to "point" to the relavant chat message, but Google appears to drop it.

• Cloned screen on monitors with different resolutions

  I want to set up a system with two displays connected. One display will be a 22inch monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1080. The other display is a 19inch display native resolution 1024x768. I want to clone the 1920x1080 display on to the 1024x768 display. I have tried this and the 1080p image is squashed on to the smaller display. Is it possible to set it up such that rather than squashing the image, I can get the smaller display to use a virtual resolution of 1920x1080 and pan the display?

• jqGrid - dynamically load different drop down values for different rows depending on another column value

  Goal: As we all know the jqGrid examples in the demo and the Wiki always refer to static values for drop down boxes. This of course is a personal preference but in dynamic design these values should be populated from the database/xml file, etc, ideally JSON formatted. Can you do this in jqGrid, yes, but with some custom coding which we will briefly show below (refer to some of my other blog entries for a more detailed discussion on this topic). What you CANNOT do in jqGrid, referrign here up and to version 3.8.x, is to load different drop down values for different rows in the jqGrid. Well, not without some trickery, which is what this discussion is about. Issue: Of course the issue is that jqGrid has been designed for high performance and thus I have no issue with them loading a  reference to a single drop down values list for every column. This way if you have 500 rows or one, each row only refers to a single list for that particuolar column. Nice! SO how easy would it be to simply traverse the grid once loaded on gridComplete or loadComplete and simply load the select tag's options from scratch, via ajax, from memory variable, hard coded etc? Impossible! Since their is no embedded SELECT tag within each cell containing the drop down values (remeber it only has a reference to that list in memory), all you will see when you inspect the cell prior to clicking on it, or even before and on beforeEditCell, is an empty <TD></TD>. When trying to load that list via a click event on that cell will temporarily load the list but jqGrid's last internal callback event will remove it and replace it with the old one, and you are back to square one. Solution: Yes, after spending a few hours on this found a solution to the problem that does not require any updates to jqGrid source code, thank GOD! Before we get into the coding details, the solution here can of course be customized to suite your specific needs, this one loads the entire drop down list that would be needed across all rows once into global variable. I then parse this object that contains all the properties I need to filter the rows depending on which ones I want the user to see based off of another cell value in that row. This only happens when clicking the cell, so no performance penalty. You may of course to load it via ajax when the user clicks the cell, but I found it more effecient to load the entire list as part of jqGrid's normal editoptions: { multiple: false, value: listingStatus } colModel options which again keeps only a reference to the sinlge list, no duplciation. • Isometric displaying two different images in different positions

  I'm creating a simple Isometric game using HTML5 and Javascript, but I can't seem to get the display to work, at the moment i have 9 tiles that have X and Y positions and the player has a X and Y position, the players X and Y properties are set to 100, and the tiles are as shown tiles[0] = new Array(3); tiles[1] = new Array(3); tiles[2] = new Array(3); tiles[0][0] = new point2D( 100, 100); tiles[0][1] = new point2D( 160, 100); tiles[0][2] = new point2D( 220, 100); tiles[1][0] = new point2D( 100, 160); tiles[1][1] = new point2D( 160, 160); tiles[1][2] = new point2D( 220, 160); tiles[2][0] = new point2D( 100, 220); tiles[2][1] = new point2D( 160, 220); tiles[2][2] = new point2D( 220, 220); Now I use this method to work out the isometric position function twoDToIso( point ) { var cords = point2D; cords.x = point.x - point.y; cords.y = (point.x + point.y) / 2; return cords; } point2D is function point2D( x, y) { this.x = x; this.y = y; } Now this i'm sure does work out the correct positioning, but here is the output Isometric view I just need to move my player position a tiny bit, but is that the best way to display my player position in the right position? • General solution to solve different sports results in different languages

  I currently have some code that checks if squash and tennis scores are valid, both in javascript and PHP. This results in 4 blocks of code existing, 2 languages * 2 sports, which does not scale well should any extra sports come around, or extra languages... How can one describe the valid scores of games via a settings/text file, so that each language can parse them and apply these rules. • play sound from different applications on different output devices (speakers, headphones)

  I want music (played e.g. via Audacious) to be played on speaker system, and all other sounds produced by other applications (including ubuntu sound effects) to be played on headphones. My computer has sound connectors at its back, and also connectors on its front panel. When I connect both headphones and speakers, only headphones work (I take it, the front connectors take precedence?). Should I purchase another sound card (in addition to the motherboard-integrated sound I have)? When I go to Audacious output settings, I see only the ouput plugin selection list, with PulseAudio selected and options like ALSA, OSS4 etc. But there's no facility to select particular output device (and I guess it wouldn't magically appear even if I had the second soundcard). Is this at all possible to bind specific application to particular output device?

  Can I have different .bashrc files loading when logging into different nodes that share the same home dir? This is, I am mostly interested to loading different PATH directories when logging as bash, depending on the different Linux nodes I log into? For example, if I log into bash in machine abc-01, I would like to have a given .bashrc loaded, but when I log into abc-02, that uses the same /home/username directory, I would like to use a different .bashrc. How can I go about doing that?

I am able to dynamically integrate a style sheet from the same origin, but I need to be able to dynamically inject a jQuery UI theme from a different origin into a page.   The scenario I want two different protocols interact with each other is as below: A and B is two different protocols. First A will interact with the server and retrieve some values. Only after A finishes retrieving the values , B will start to interact with the server. Now my problem is that is there an elegant way to initial B when A retrieves the values. Currently I just initial B in A's data process function. But i don't think that this is an elegant way. What I mean an elegant way is that the initialization of B is done by a flow controller or something like that, but not another protocol. Is there an elegant way? such using defered or any other things. I'm just new to twisted, not knowing very much about defered.... Thank you very much!

• Capistrano deploying to different servers with different authentication methods

  I need to deploy to 2 different server and these 2 servers have different authentication methods (one is my university's server and the other is an amazon web server AWS) I already have running capistrano for my university's server, but I don't know how to add the deployment to AWS since for this one I need to add ssh options for example to user the .pem file, like this: ssh_options[:keys] = [File.join(ENV["HOME"], ".ssh", "test.pem")] ssh_options[:forward_agent] = true I have browsed starckoverflow and no post mention about how to deal with different authentication methods this and this I found a post that talks about 2 different keys, but this one refers to a server and a git, both usings different pem files. This is not the case. I got to this tutorial, but couldn't find what I need. I don't know if this is relevant for what I am asking: I am working on a rails app with ruby 1.9.2p290 and rails 3.0.10 and I am using an svn repository Please any help os welcome. Thanks a lot
