• Synaptic opens with "starting without Administrative privileges

  When I try to open Synaptic from the AWN Cardapio applet menu it gives me the 'starting without administrative privileges' message and then I can't install anything. I can run sudo synaptic and it works fine, but how can I get it to just prompt me for my password like it used to? I don't like having to open terminal just to open synaptic. Any ideas? im using AWN Cardapio Applet and not the GNOME panel classic menu, so i can't just change the command in the menu, like in the classic one.

• Degrading administrative privilege to standard with single admin user account

  I recently met with a severe issue with user accounts. In my system, there is only administrator user named vivek. I added another user with name vivi and changed its privilege to administrator. After clicked on my username, vivek,and changed its privilege to standard. Since vivek is being the current user, I dropped with all administrator privileges. No password was set for the new administrator user vivi and hence it was disabled by default. I no longer access to any administrative activities. Later I corrected this by editing etc/group file. Isn't this a severe bug? Being the current administrator user, how could I degrade myself to a standard user and got out from administrator's seat? I did not get any warning messages indicating no other administrators exists to manage my system. I suggest this warning should be included there in user accounts when an administrator user changes his privilege without any enabled administrators. Your thoughts?

  I have a batch script using Windows shell commands to perform several administrative actions. The script is running great on Windows 7 but when i try launching it from Python 2.6 nothing happens: import os a = os.popen("somebatchfile.bat") I assume that this is because the bat file uses several commands that require an administrative privileges but i don't want to prompt to a password using runas.exe or embedding the password within the code. Is there any way to make UAC prompt for user approval or something?

  I have this idea, just want to see if it is implementable or not. Let say I have my office laptop, with no administrator privileges, using example domain ASDF Can I set at my home, another AD server (Microsoft or Samba 4), that have the same domain ASDF as my office laptop. Then I set an administrative user in my own AD server. Theoretically, is it possible to authenticate my office laptop with my own AD?   When i deploy anything to a variety of sharepoint servers i get problems with some packages failing, from what i can see the only error given is as below. The timer job for this operation has been created, but it will fail because the administrative service for this server is not enabled. If the timer job is sched uled to run at a later time, you can run the jobs all at once using stsadm.exe - o execadmsvcjobs. To avoid this problem in the future, enable the Windows ShareP oint Services administrative service, or run your operation through the STSADM.e xe command line utility. Is this a known problem? I googled for the text but got only one other person with the problem who simply worked round it. I'm trying to batch deploy solutions programmatically and so these errors render the whole code worthless if you have to go back and redo bits by hand afterwards. Is batch deployment simply not possible? Thanks!

  I have inherited a laptop running Windows XP 64bit professional from a former system admin of my Lab. The laptop is encrypted with TrueCrypt and luckily I have a password for TrueCrypt and can boot and login into the guest account. However this is where my problems starts. There are four account on the laptop three of which do have administrative privileges. However nobody of two formers members of the lab and one current member remember their passwords. I was given the assignment of recovering 2TB of data from that laptop. How does one go about reseting administrative password in Windows in particularly in the presence of TrueCrypt? If you are wondering I have never used Windows in my life so the only thing I usually with any Windows machine is just wipe out entire HDD and install OpenBSD.

  So in using Windows 8, I've discovered that the administrative shares are disabled. There seems to be no easy way to get them re-enabled. Is anyone aware of a work around, or solution? I did not have this issue with Windows 7 After disabling UAC. However in Windows 8 this still doesn't work. • C# setup project output automatically start with administrative rights

  Hi, i've created an setup project for a .net-application which works fine. The problem is, that the application begins to write log-files after startup and this requires administrative rights on windows vista and windows 7. I know there are some folders which i could use to write into without administrative rights. When i start the application as administrator, everything works fine. I asked myself, if it's possible to change the setup project in visual studio in a way that the installed application automatically owns administrative rights on the target system?   I had a server die. It is gone forever. It is still listed in the servers folder of the first administrative group in the Exchange System Manager. When I click "all tasks Remove Server" I get the following error: The Server "SERVERNAME" cannot be removed because: -One or more users currently use a mailbox on this server. These users must be moved to a mailbox store on a different server or be mail disabled before uninstalling this server. Facility: Exchange System Manager ID no: c103f492 Exchange System Manager Any help would be MUCH appreciated. I cannot access the mailbox stores anymore and I do not care about the lost mailboxes. We deleted the inactive and old users as well. So I am stumped on this one. I just need to remove the old machine. THANKS!

• Running Windows without administrative rights?

  Hello, Among the millions of applications written for Windows, I assume there are probably quite a lot that are too old or too sloppy to run without administrative rights. To convert users to using non-admin accounts in their day-to-day use of Windows, I need a tool that will sort applications between those than can run safely as non-admin and those that expect to have those rights and will thus show some obvious or not-so-obvious wrong behavior as a result. Does someone know of such a tool that would be available for XP/Vista/7, and either scan the whole disk for unsafe applications, or would be started at boot time and lurk in the background so that it would show a pop-up and report applications that triggered an error because of this lack of admin rights?   In situations where the PC has no CD drive and operating a guest account with limited privileges, how to install an anti-virus tool? Malware is not permitting to open any anti-virus vendor's site and also blocking all sites opened via Google that contain the term "online scan". I somehow managed to download through mirror links with a Download Manager as the browser's download was blocked by the malware. But the problem didn't end there. After I downloaded the anti-virus tool, it failed to install because it needed administrative rights. The user didn't know the administrator password. I tried via command line with runas, but it also asks for the administrator password. The OS is Windows XP. How to deal with these type of malwares if there is a scenario that CD drive is not there only Internet is there?

• Domain controller policies having administrative issues with program installations

  I have an issue with our domain and policies where a user needs administrative rights to install a program and someone provides the credentials for the 'run as admin' or 'run as other user' it will always show an error: Cannot find specified file on the drive. So we cannot install programs for our employees. How I fix it is I add the user to administrators, force a policy update, have them reboot, run as administrator and install it that way. Then remove them after and update the policy. Another way was to right click the install file (.exe/.msi) and add the user and administrator as an owner with full control. Only works when we have the installation file. I have no idea how to fix this and I can't find a relevant thread or QA about this problem. I can only find users having issues on their home computers not on a domain. Any help and threads to read would be great!

• A Domain Admin user doesn't have effective Administrative rights on a Domain Computer

  I am a developer who is setting up a virtual domain environment of testing purposes and am having trouble with the setup. I have created a new DC on a new Forest... call it dev.contoso.com. I have setup a virtual internal network for all machines that are going to be apart of this virtual test environment and have given each machine a static IP address in the 192.169.150.0 subnet. I have added machine1.dev.contoso.com to the domain dev.contoso.com. I have also provisioned a user account (adminuser) in the domain and made that user a member of Domain Admins group. Upon logging into machine1 using my newly created Domain Admin account, I cannot access/run any files on machine1. When I go into the advanced permissions for the c:\ folder and goto properties - Security Tab - Advanced - Effective Permissions and search for the dev\adminuser (mentioned above), I get an error saying: Windows can't calculate the effective permissions for admin user What do I need to do to get Administrative rights on Machine1? I am using Server 2008 R2 for both the AD controller and machine1.

• Administrative shares in Windows 7 Pro not visible

  My desktop machine has a clean install of Windows 7 Professional. For some reason the standard administrative shares Admin$, C$, D$, etc are not visible, either in Computer Management - Shared Folders - Shares or via net share. I also have a laptop with a clean install of Windows 7 Professional, and I can see the admin shares in both places. As such, I can map to \\laptop\c$ from the desktop, but I can't map to \\desktop\c$ from the laptop. I pretty much took the defaults during the Windows 7 installations. I've tried adding LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to the registry on the desktop, but that didn't work. On the desktop I've also disabled UAC, turned off Windows firewall, removed it from a homegroup, made sure file and printer sharing is turned on, but nothing has worked. There is some subtle difference between the two machines that I can't seem to find. I'm logging into both machines using a local account that is in the Administrators group. Both accounts have the same name and password. I really don't want to have to create a new share for the desktop's C drive, especially since C$ is visible and working on the laptop and therefore I should be able to make it work on the desktop. Any idea why the admin shares would work on one machine and not another? Or why LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy would fail?
