  • Moving From IT to Embedded software Developing

    - by Ameer Adel
i worked for two years at a channel station, managing various Types of tasks, varying from printers installation, software solution, down to managing and maintaining server automation, to be honest, i always been enthusiastic about programming, i studied at some affordable college and finished my IT path successfully, my graduation project was in C# ADO.NET couple of years ago. Obviously it was so much of a beginner spaghetti code than a well furnished code. I also had the chance; after leaving the IT career, to study about some ASP.NET MVC and web apps development. I have rookie level of coding skills due to the poor level of education i endured, and sufficient resources. Currently i m working as a trainee in a newly opened embedded software development company, that is being said, i am, as i sound, have a little idea about the algorithms included, as i was reading for the past couple of days, embedded system development requires more strict coding skills, including memory management, CPU optimization according to its architect, and couple of other tricks regarding the display, and power management if mobile.. etc. My question is, What type of Algorithms am i supposed to use in such cases, as i mentioned before, i am really enthusiastic about learning programming skills and algorithms related to embedded systems and programming languages, including C/C++, Java, C#, and some EC++ if still operational.

  • N Tiers with SubSonic 3, Dirty Columns collection is alwayes empty on update

    - by Adel
Hello guys here is what i am doing, and not working for me. I have a DAL generated with SubSonic 3 ActiveRecord template, i have a service layer (business layer if you well) that have mixture of facade and some validation. say i have a method on the Service layer like public void UpdateClient(Client client); in my GUI i create a Client object fill it with some data with ID and pass it to the service method and this never worked, the dirty columns collection (that track which columns are altered in order to use more efficant update statment) is alwayes empty. if i tried to get the object from database inside my GUI then pass it to the service method it's not working either. the only scenario i find working is if i query the object from the database and call Update() on the same context all inside my GUI and this defeats the whole service layer i've created. however for insert and delete everything working fine, i wonder if this have to do something with object tracking but what i know is SubSonic don't do that. please advice. thanks. Adel.

  • Connecting to an Amazon AWS database [closed]

    - by Adel
so I'm a bit overwhelmed/bewildered by the whole concept of networking/remote-desktop , etc. The context is that - in my company I need to access a remote database. The standard way I use is to first connect using a VPN-Client( called Shrew Soft Access manager), then once that says: "network device configured tunnel enabled" I'm good to connect using windows "Remote Desktop Connection" . But now our company set up an Amazon AWS database, and I'm told I need to connect, and I ony need to use RDP. So I tried the standard windows one - but it doesn't work. On wikipedia , I looked up remote desktop sftware and downloaded one called VNC Viewer. but it doesn't work. Any advice/tips/comments appreciated EDIT: YAYA! I finally got a little more connected . I had to use my username as a fully qualified name: Computer: XYZ.XYZ.XYZ.XYZ USERNAME: XYZ.XYZ.XYZ.XYZ\aazzam

  • How to model the components of a non Information System?

    - by Adel C Kod
So I am working on a project that's related to the Kernel code(specifically related to the TCP/IP stack of the kernel). I need to build some models to describe the functionality and components of my system. Initially I thought about Class Diagram, it can describe the general architecture of my system but it doesn't make sense since my code is VERY structured(written in standard C). I also thought about DFDs, they'd describe the processes of my system, and how the data is flowing. But they contain something which doesn't really fit in; data-storages. I have no databases here(at all). For the functionality, other team members suggested using Activity and Sequence diagrams, which is kinda okay with me, but what about the system components? So basically my question is; I want to describe the components of my system; what do you suggest as a meaningful diagram to follow? (Again, the project is a research low-level systems-oriented project with almost no user-interface at all)

  • How do I make the correct career decision in regards to product manager/QA vs programmer?

    - by Adel
I'm curious about how to approach the issue of whether I should focus on programming or on QA/testing/product management. I know that the latter seems like a broad category( if so, think of it as "general IT support" for now). At the moment I'm stronger in QA/prod. mgt ; however I'd like to switch more to programming, and I see I may have this opportunity. Wouldn't it be easier to switch to QA/prod. mgt in the future, if I go into programming now; rather than trying the reverse-order(i.e. if I decided later to go into coding.. say around mid-30s then it'd likely be harder). Just looking for any advice or tips about how to see more clearly. Part of me is scared I can't handle the programming side, but part of me says since there's demand and I'm interested that it's still worth a shot.

  • What are the memory-management capabilities of MySQL + JDBC (in light of autonomic computing)?

    - by Adel
I'm interested in implementing some kind of autonomic-computing functionality using MySQL. By autonomic-computing I mean roughly some failsafe abilities, whereby the application appears to be at least slightly "intelligent" For reference, the main parts of autonomic computing we'd like are the "self-configuring" and "self-healing" features (the other two - "self-optimizing" and "self-protecting", are too abstract/futuristic for us, at this time). Sofor example, if we have a sample Java application that utilizes a MySQL database, we might want to automatically restart the MySQL database if we take up too much memory. Or maybe we want to have the ability to dynamiccally adjust the database memory as needed. So for example, when we start the application the database begins with a 56 Megabyte buffer; but then as we insert so many rows we want to have it automatically jump up to 512 MB, then to 1024, until a max of 4096 MB. Does all of the above suggest that MySQL is too "weak" for the task? Do you suggest using Oracle database? My professor believes that by using Java we can basically make up for any memory-management deficiencies that MySQL has in relation to Oracle DB. I'm new to MySQL , but have experience with Oracle. If all of the above sounds wishy-washy, it is because I'm still fleshing it out. thanks

  • Using HttpClient with the RightScale API

    - by Ameer Deen
I'm trying to use the WCF Rest Starter Kit with the RightScale's Login API which seems fairly simple to use. Edit - Here's a blog entry I wrote on using Powershell to consume the API. Edit - Created a generic .NET wrapper for the RightScale API - NRightAPI It's exactly as simple as it looks while using CURL. In order for me to obtain a login cookie all I need to do is: curl -v -c rightcookie -u username:password "https://my.rightscale.com/api/acct/accountid/login?api_version=1.0" And I receive the following cookie: HTTP/1.1 204 No Content Date: Fri, 25 Dec 2009 12:29:24 GMT Server: Mongrel 1.1.3 Status: 204 No Content X-Runtime: 0.06121 Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Content-Length: 0 Cache-Control: no-cache Added cookie _session_id="488a8d9493579b9473fbcfb94b3a7b8e5e3" for domain my.rightscale.com, path /, expire 0 Set-Cookie: _session_id=488a8d9493579b9473fbcfb94b3a7b8e5e3; path=/; secure Vary: Accept-Encoding However, when I use the following C# code: HttpClient http = new HttpClient("https://my.rightscale.com/api/accountid/login?api_version=1.0"); http.TransportSettings.UseDefaultCredentials = false; http.TransportSettings.MaximumAutomaticRedirections = 0; http.TransportSettings.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password"); Console.WriteLine(http.Get().Content.ReadAsString()); Instead of a HTTP 204, I get a redirect: You are being <a> href="https://my.rightscale.com/dashboard"redirected <a> How do I get the WCF REST starter kit working with the RighScale API ?

  • Force Quirks mode with Doctype

    - by Ameer
I have a page which needs to be rendered in Quirks mode for the page to be loaded properly. The problem is that the page uses valid XHTML and thus has a doctype. This forces the page to render in Standards mode in all browsers. Is there any workaround/hack that can force Quirks mode eventhough I have a doctype?

  • AccountManagement.UserPrincipal.Current takes 5 seconds

    - by Adel Hazzah
I'm using the new .NET 3.5 System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement API. In my code, I need to determine the current System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement.UserPrincipal. My naive approach was to do this: using AccountManagement = System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement; ... // Determine current UserPrincipal. // (On my machine, this blocks for 5 seconds) // AccountManagement.UserPrincipal principal = AccountManagement.UserPrincipal.Current; My computer is a stand-alone machine running Vista. I am not part of any domain, etc. Any ideas on how to improve the performance?

  • What is the purpose of this string argument in a JavaScript function?

    - by Adel
    In the following function, there is the line: var username=getCookie("username"); Here's the whole function: function checkCookie() { var username=getCookie("username"); if (username!=null && username!="") { alert("Welcome again " + username); } else { username=prompt("Please enter your name:",""); if (username!=null && username!="") { setCookie("username",username,365); } } What is the point of the "username" argument being passed above? function getCookie(c_name) { var i,x,y,ARRcookies=document.cookie.split(";"); for (i=0;i<ARRcookies.length;i++) { x=ARRcookies[i].substr(0,ARRcookies[i].indexOf("=")); y=ARRcookies[i].substr(ARRcookies[i].indexOf("=")+1); x=x.replace(/^\s+|\s+$/g,""); if (x==c_name) { return unescape(y); } } } The whole code is here Thanks!
